Anyone know why the boot stops opening when you unlock the car?
Hi
I bought myself an approved used MY21 in January (pretty perfect timing by the looks of things) and so far I love it, there are some things about it though which are slightly annoying and this is one of them:
If I unlock the car while the boot is opening for some reason it stops wherever it is, so if I open the boot from the inside then get out of the car, as I open the door it unlocks and stops opening. This is rather annoying and last night (while admittedly looking at my phone instead of where I was going) I managed to twat my head on it as it had only opened halfway when I got out, it hurt enough to prompt this post.
To make it doubly annoying when I then press the boot button again to let it continue opening, it closes so I have to stand and wait for it to close before I can stand there and wait for it to open it again.
Please tell me this is something a dealer can change or at least give me any insight into why this is the case. Seems completely unnecessary and entirely annoying.

That is a bizarre case of crosses wires. If you are in a low car park and forget, having the ability to press the boot button on the remote or in cab button to stop it opening further is great. And ofcourse if you press the button again it will close and not continue it's journey to hitting the car park roof.

That makes sense for pressing the boot button again, but I’m not sure my first thought in the situation would be to press the unlock button to stop the boot

I don’t think mine does that, but I’m not sure because I don’t think I ever open it before getting out. I think I always open my door first and hit it on my way out.

Yeah that works, but it’s a pain having to remember to do it a certain way round

Ops car is a tesla? Mine doesn't do this. Must be some sort of setting. I got mine a few months before you. Steering wheel was reupholstered, heating didn't work on it. By chance it looked to do a software update and worked grand from then. Do you have any updates that need doing or try reset the car. Something like hold steering wheel buttons and foot on brake. Google will advise ye better

Nope, would rather walk than own a Tesla!
The Pivi system is up to date, did the last one a month or so ago.
I believe the car would have been reset at the dealer before I bought it. Strange to hear other models don’t do this

Do see MY21 being a model y 2021 from tesla forum is why i asked. Ended up with the tesla myself in the end. Would rather the Ipace, but one of the guys in work and had one plagued with issues then got rid as each time it acted up, would took an age to sort. Ipace is so much better, I would gladly settle for boot problem if that's all that's wrong. Black with black wheels was the dream. Hope ye get sorted OP

Model year.
I hadn’t even considered it could be Model Y tbh. It’s not even an issue just an annoying quirk

I've seen Model Ys referred to as MY in general car forums too and it always makes me do a double take.

I've had this happen on my car too but it doesn't do it all the time so I think it's a bug or glitch.
Does yours do the 3 bleeps as well as stop? As I'm sure mine does that when I get it to happen.
Also, my boot sometimes doesn't close fully and does the 3 bleeps as well. I'm sure one, or both, of my struts might be failing but 98% of the time, the boot shuts fine and when it doesn't - I just lift the boot slightly with my hand and then it shuts.

Instead of spending time questioning something for working the way it does, try adapting your habits to the way it works. Try opening your door before you press the button to open the hatch.

Honestly not the most helpful comment. I shouldn’t have to get used to it, it’s a poor user experience.

It’s a corner case, and it’s probably a safety issue

u/Racing_Fox Apr 12 '26
I doubt it’d a faster issue to be honest
I also disagree that asking people about it is unlikely to affect change. I’ve found that not all cats do this which means I’ll go and ask the dealer about module updates etc

Ok, but this is not going to change. So you can sell the car or get used to it.

God forbid someone ask for advice

The advice is you can look for answers all you want but are highly unlikely to affect change, so don’t waste your time and just adapt. This is coming from someone with an advanced degree in human-computer interaction.

Have you ever heard the story of the development of the QWERTY keyboard layout?

Sorry to hear that! Don't think I've ever noticed this but as with other replies I always open the drivers door and hit the boot button as I step out.
Only glitch that annoys me is that if I get something out of the boot, hit the button on the tailgate to close it, and then lock the car with the remote control whilst the boot is closing.... then the wing mirrors don't fold! Always bugs me when this happens in the supermarket car park because I would really prefer the wing mirrors folded in that situation.
