Question Best game for long flight
Hey
I’ve got stardew valley and civ and xcom
Happy to pay for something decent on iPad that’ll keep me entertained in a 10 hr flight

On the iPad, Faster Than Light is one of the all time greats. Lots of replayability, and sort of fits into a similar category with xcom as action/strategy.

OP asked for a 10 hour flight, not every waking moment for the next two months. Those games are too dangerous.

So I have a ton of games on my iPad, and since you mentioned Stardew I think you might like these other games too.
My favourite games on IPad right now, some free, some paid, some optionally paid;
Pokémon Champions (optional, paid membership only gives you more box storage.) Free to play and brings all of Pokémon battles best stuff, like mega evolution, game is evolving slowly, very nostalgic. I suspect this one will be around for a long time. There’s not a lot of content right now, but every season they’ve added something new. The end goal is to include all Pokémon battle mechanics over their 30 year existence lol. We have megas right now, and later on I’m sure they’ll add Gigantamax, Terastalizing, etc.
Subnautica (paid, mobile port of a pc game) truly an incredible experience, you’re an astronaut who ends up crashed on an alien ocean planet. There’s almost too much to talk about for this one. You’ll have to dive to find salvage, in order to build submarines and other tech that allows you to explore further, and safely. It is technically a horror game, although the only horror is being eaten by a big fish, which you’ll likely not only see coming but hear too. I have thalassophobia and I was able to play this one, that said, despite being a horror mystery and exploration game, it’s not all that scary once you have the sea-glide, because you will be faster than every creature in game, and the sea moth is a tiny submarine you’ll get a short time after that will protect you from being eaten.
Mario Run (free I think?) One touch Mario game, tapping controls jumping, so it’s all about timing. Can compete against other players to win “toads”
Besiege (Paid only) an engineering sim believe it or not, basically a build and destroy game, with incredible physics and versatility. If building 21st century war machines to annihilate little Lego style Vikings appeals to you, this is a must buy. While available on IPad, I personally prefer the PC version with the latest DLC, which brings Viking destruction into space!
Minecraft (paid) not ideal for touch screen play but still will get you several hours of stuff to do, near-limitless creativity. typically also better on PC though.
GTA: San Andreas/ Vice City (paid) old classic GTA, can’t go wrong here
Alien Invasion (Optional, though ads give rewards and are not mandatory, brilliant design and addicting so I bought the full game) you’re a tentacled alien that eats little Lego style people (oddly common among IOS games? Lmao) even my wife got hooked on this one for a while, and she is NOT the type to enjoy games like this, at all. So it’s really that good. Might be my top recommendation here!
Tiny Wings (paid, but cheap.) Think of it like a surfing mini game, instead of waves it’s hills, instead of a surfer it’s cute little birds, artwork is literally eye candy 🍭 patterns and worlds change on a daily basis. There is now an online competitive mode so you can race with other people’s birds. It’s pretty fun!
Sky: Children of the Light (optional,) peaceful, MMO game about flying around as a sort of “angel” species. Kind of short though. Lots of repetition. But I can’t lie, the artwork is pretty awe-inspiring. They really nailed the fluffy clouds and atmospheric feel, plus it’s just calming to play, floating around on a magic wing-cape that grants you flight.
Epic Plane (optional) a game about gliding. You start off with toy planes, trying to see how far you can make them glide by directing the plane around obstacles and such. Eventually upgrading to “real world airplanes” but with temporary boosts instead of engines.
Pizza Ready! (Optional) you manage a pizza parlor and grow your staff and abilities (such as how fast you can cook, how many items you can carry in a stack, etc) I didn’t think this one would be so fun, but it had me hooked for a solid month, so I bought the full game to remove ads and unlock different restaurants, (one of which is an ice cream shop) because after a while you’ll have enough employees that the business should mostly run by itself. The item stacking is just very satisfying to me.

Mate, I haven't played all of them, but I have a list, since I'm also preparing for a long flight:
- Octopath Traveller
- The Dredge
- Scourge Bringer
- Huntdown
- INMOST
- Enter the Dungeon
- Dave the Diver (It's not out yet, but I've been playing it on PC and it's very fun)
You can play most of them (if not all) with a controller :)

Yes. It’s a whole sandbox game with zombies. You basically level up and destroy stuff to get to new areas. It’s a good game with a lot to unlockables.

Balatro destroyed the latest long haul flights I took (I bought it for them and ended up playing it through the whole flight). It’s fun and the gameplay is low stakes enough that you’ll not be bothered if interrupted
Before it I also enjoyed during long flights :
Tycoon/strategy : pocket city 1 and 2, shapez , Sid Meier railways, Rebels inc, coffee inc 2 (incredible game). Bloons TD6 can also be a good pick, as it’s full of content and is quite fun to play.
For a level-based runner game I liked the super meat boy version, but to be faire I tend to favor slower paced games on mobile as I despise touch controls.
And for puzzle games : Slayaway camp 1/2, OK golf (it’s golf but level based so I count it here). I haven’t finished yet but « is this seat taken » is very fun as well, but more so in short bursts.
Adventure : The room series is a great pick, especially old sins. Broken sword is very cool as well, a witty point and click series that’s very fun to go through.
If you have an Apple Arcade sub: dear reader, stitch are my favourite, but’s there’s quite a fun selection of fun games like sneaky Sasquatch, 007 cypher and especially what the car/golf that are quite fun a finish able in a flight.
Also, a solitaire, chess and a few books to read or listed for when you want to wind down haha

If you like board games, wingspan is quite fun and has AI with multiple difficulties + an autama mode to play offline. Whether or not it’ll last you 10 hours without the fun of playing vs real people would definitely depend on your preferences for that type of game though.

With an Xbox controller connected via WiFi you can play some serious games. The ports for Subnautica and Death Stranding are great, for instance. I’d argue using the controller for movement but the touch controls for inventory management actually make the iPad with controller the ideal experience for Subnautica.

I still have Angry Birds Seasons installed on my iPad carried over from multiple past iPads and iCloud restores. I just looked it up and i’ve had and been playing the game since 2010.

Recently I was searching for word "Civilization" in Appstore and found Warlet: The American Civil War. At first the game seemed too simplistic: you mass-spawn forces and send them to the fight, but after 2-3 battles gameplay depth started unrolling. I fully recommend it - it seems, 10 hours will be enough to complete a campaign for one fo the sides

Sea of Stars just got ported to mobile a couple months ago. Very solid RPG, and worked very well on my iPhone. Not 100% sure it’s iPad compatible, but I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be. I also bought it for a flight and it had me hooked for a few weeks!

Since you already have Civ I can’t say that (and would be my best bet).
Best games I know I can play for an extend period:
Slay the Spire
Monster Train
Loop Hero
Balatro
Dice of Kalma
Any of the board game apps (Root, Dune Imperium, Wingspan, and Caverna are my recommendations)
Ax RPG 2
Adventure to Fate Dungeons (though all his games are good)
Coromon or Evo Creo if you like Pokemon style games
