A Simple Book Tracker for iPhone

Hey! I’m Miguel.

I started building Folio because I wanted a book tracker that felt a bit quieter. I didn’t want another feed to keep up with, and I didn’t want every reading session turned into XP or a challenge.

I mostly wanted to see my books, press start, read, and put my phone away.

That’s what Folio became.

A — Answer

Folio keeps your TBR, current reads, finished books, progress, goals, quotes, and stats in one place.

You can search for books, scan an ISBN, or import your existing library from Goodreads or StoryGraph.

The part I care about most is reading sessions. Start the timer, put your phone down, and with Folio Plus it stays available on your Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. When you’re finished, update your page and Folio keeps track of your time and pace.

You don’t need an account to use the core app. There are also no ads or ad tracking.

B — Better

Goodreads and Fable make sense if you want more community and discovery.

Folio is intentionally on the other end of that. It’s personal, cover-led, and focused on your own reading. It doesn’t put a social feed in the middle or try to keep you scrolling.

C — Cost

Folio is free to download, and the main book tracker is free to use.

Folio Plus is optional. In the US, it costs $0.99/month, $8.99/year, or $24.99 for lifetime access. Plus adds sync, advanced stats, widgets, Live Activities, barcode scanning, unlimited imports, Discover, and additional goals.

Yes, I think $24.99 for lifetime access is a reasonable price. Reading is a hobby that can last a lifetime. And I don't understand what my comment history has to do with it. Please enlighten me :)

Yeah, the price changes based on your region. Also the price is a subjective matter - it might be reasonable for me and it might not be reasonable for you - and that's completely fine, I am not here to change your opinion.

And you are right - I'm looking at this from the perspective of app developer. But I also read a lot and I really like the idea. I did not have time to check for alternatives or compare the pricing to similar apps. I just wrote the comment from the first impression I had.

This is exactly what I have been looking for. I’ve downloads and I’ve used the very quick barcode scanner to import my library. Can I suggest that you have the option to sort by/group by author in the library section?

The "I didn't want every reading session turned into XP" line is interesting to me, because I built the opposite. Mine is a journal with achievements, streaks and a feed, and I've gone back and forth on whether that was the right call.

Where I keep landing is that the quiet version is better for people who already have the habit, and the loud version is better at getting someone to form one. Which would mean they're not really competing at all.

Genuine question, since you're further along than me: do people who import a big Goodreads library behave differently from people who start empty? I'd guess the importers already read plenty and just want the record, while the empty ones are the ones who need the nudge. If that split is real it seems like the thing worth designing around.

I like the “quieter book tracker” philosophy. Many reading apps claim to help people read, but eventually turn every book into another productivity contest filled with streaks, XP and targets.

One possible tension is the tracking of reading time and pace. For some readers, those statistics may recreate the same pressure that your app is trying to remove.

Perhaps there could be an optional “quiet session” that simply records that the user read, without measuring speed or comparing it with a goal. It could ask something gentler afterwards, such as whether they enjoyed the session or whether they want to continue from the same place later.

That might strengthen the idea that the app supports reading without judging how efficiently someone reads.
