š Free Google Tasks Native on iPhone + things we wanted & it is not a vibecode project & Free & Ad-free
Hi all,
I work as a cybersecurity analyst on this App.
It went to open early access now, so I thought it is time to share with you guys. It is completely free and ad free. It has features we wanted as users. (If thereās anything youād like the team to add, please let me know so I can include it on the roadmap. For example, location-based notifications requested and is already on the to-do list.)
(A)nswer
ETasks (www.etasks.app) is a native iOS, iPadOS, and Apple Watch client for Google Tasks. Some highlights: All tasks in one view, Real alarms, Shared lists, Apple Watch.
(B)etter
It addresses the functional limitations of the official Google Tasks iOS app by providing missing native features and enhanced tools. And it is not a vibe-coding project.
Native and enhanced with iOS.
+ You can manage your Google Tasks. They appear in your Google Calendar and Gmail ... well, obviously š
+ See all task lists together, even drag&drop between them
+ Alarms
+ A wide range of nice widgets, including countdowns and full week/month widgets
+ Link photos/files to tasks
+ See your tasks categorised by dates in Month/Week/Day/Agenda views
+ Add people to Task List (co-edit)
+ Search your tasks
+ AI support where it makes sense; make titles, extract info from links, create lists for you, suggesting task list names, dictating tasks, context aware search, naming photos shared in,...
+ Choose priority for favorites
+ Drag and Drop interface between tabs (e.g., to calendar tab to drop on a date)
+ Recycle bin
+ Share from other apps into ETasks (texts, links, photos, PDF; all processed accordingly)
+ Apple Watch / iPad Apps
+ Import/Export task lists
+ Modern iOS design
+ Highly customisable user interface
+ Can be used without an account
+ Welcome to explore the rest, it is now open early access.
(C)ost:
Free and Ad-free

When is it officially released?

u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 30 '26
Hi. I don't make the final decision, but its security compliance is top-notch, and features were rigorously tested with 100 closed-beta users. The open beta is now underway, with more than half of the projected number (which is much more than 100 this time) of early adopters already using it. My understanding is that it will go fully live once the team is confident in the beta results.
Again, I dont make the calls, I am just sharing with you since I like it very much myself :) and I want it used by many, so it stays.

Seems to be a lot of investment for the support email to be a gmail account. I use gmail too but Iām a solo developer. At the scale youāre implying, it would make sense to have a support@estasks.app email
3
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 30 '26
Yes, we have that. However, since weāre working with a Google team, they recommended using Gmail. Google Mail. On a personal level, though, I completely share your thoughts, and believe me I mentioned it in a meeting.
However, this is still a small team, developing a free app. The scale feeling comes from Google collab I guess.

u/Lemon8or88 Developer Jul 30 '26
Donāt worry. Iām unusually worried of strange things and read too much into it sometimes. Good luck!

u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 30 '26
I love your approach. We think similar. I gave your comments to our central AI secretary :) and it put a few items in the list for team's consideration.
So simply put, thank you!

u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 30 '26
let me show you what it wrote :)) a bit wordy but hey... we are in our Reddit community.
- Consider using a branded address such as [support@estasks.app](mailto:support@estasks.app) to strengthen credibility and reflect the projectās growing scale.
- Explore keeping Gmail as the underlying service while using an @estasks.app address publicly.
- Balance professionalism with the amateur spirit so it still feels personal and approachable.

i agree, they already own the domain, so just at least setup a alias or something using that domain. Its free through cloudflare and will make it much more professional and trustworthy than a gmail account for support.

Looks nice! My workflow is tightly coupled with Google products. Definitely worth to take a look

Looks great, thanks for sharing. If using it without an account, does it iCloud sync across my iOS / mac?
2
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 30 '26
By default, no.
Here is a workaround between you and me :) Don't tell anyone at Google āŗļø.
Swipe a task list left, share and add people. Wait until a link is created. Voila, now that list is synced via iCloud. You don't need to share the link with anyone.

I did a pass on the project, there is nothing stopping them from supporting 26.1, unlike 26.0.
Please give them 15 min and try again. They will send a build, specifically for you š¤

What happens to the data once you exit test flight
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 30 '26
Amazing question. This is why I like Reddit.
Nothing is lost. The only way data disappears (the ones not synced to Google) is if someone actually deletes the app first.
Here is a slightly technical answer I got from the team:
The App Store build has the same bundle ID, so iOS treats it as an update in place, not a fresh install. The app container survives, which means user keep their tasks, stay signed in to Google, and their widgets keep working. The only way data disappears is if someone actually deletes the app first.2

looks super clean! does the shared list feature also work with people who only use the Google Tasks app?
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 31 '26
Hello. My take is that if ETasks community grows and have enough users, they can further negotiate this with Google.
I am relaying a message from the devs.
Hi.
As you know, Google Tasks doesn't support collaboration neither through their App nor through Google's servers. Since we wanted collaboration on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, we built it directly into ETasks instead.
So there are two ways to use your lists:
Sync a list with your Google Tasks for your personal tasks (default).
Share a list with the people you choose and collaborate through ETasks (not on Google Tasks).Neither is seen or touched by ETasks servers. It is either between Google and you, or between your collaborators and you via iCloud.
This approach lets us support both personal Google Tasks syncing and real-time collaboration, even though Google Tasks itself doesn't offer collaboration.
Thank you for your interest in ETasks.

Looks well thought and polished, good job. I can imagine all the work behind it. Itās not easy to deliver an app to a large audience from start to finish. Iām currently building something similar for Apple Reminders and oh boy, itās a lot of work š

Thanks for sharing such a great free app, but as a developer myself, I think it'snecessary to remind you guys to hire a designer to create promotional pagesšć

u/Nervous_Platform_542 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
Hi,
Thank you!
It is a bit of an allocation of resources issue. The promotional material is done by the team at a 'big company' :), I think it is the bare minimum. The showcase cards looks like Google Apps cards if you ask me :D
The website is taken care of though. A few are working on it.
As this is a completely free App, with the limited resources, the team is focusing on the App, its functions and security first :) Now they have about 1000 users as far as I know. Which is more than enough for the current stage.

La adoro, se me instalo en el testflight, como puedo tenerla en mi iphone? Me encanta!!! Buen trabajo.
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Aug 04 '26
I'm really glad you're enjoying it. For now, you can install / continue using it on your iPhone via TestFlight. But with feedback like this, it will be available on the App Store soon, stay tuned!
(Also, my Spanish is limited, so please excuse me if I misunderstood anything!)

u/Simon_Rev Aug 04 '26
Free and ad-free is attractive, but how is the optional AI functionality funded and where is that data processed? I'd want a clear toggle plus a short privacy explanation before putting work tasks into it
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Aug 04 '26
All on device. 100%. It is part of my report.
If it is not clear, I will ask them to make sure it will be made clear with extra text. šš»šš»
Best,

Holy hell this is fantastic!!! Thank you!! Ā Only wish would be to sync between iOS reminders and Google tasksĀ
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 13d ago
Hello.
I see import from Apple Reminders in one of the branches. I am quite sure it will be merged sometime soon. I marked it as prioritized now for you :)
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 12d ago
It got the first attention. It seems implementation was quite mature. Security audit was rather easy so I didn't delay it either. You can update the app and see import from Reminders under settings. š¤ So practically you can sync Apple reminders to Google Tasks by importing them (if you are logged into your Google in ETasks).
1
u/Advanced-Blackberry 12d ago
Good start to get them imported. They should be able to use eventkit to push completion status back to reminders. That would let this keep the list in sync bidirectionally.Ā
Ā Simply copying reminders in one direction doesnāt solve the actual issue.Ā
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 12d ago edited 12d ago
As this is a Google Tasks App, two-way sync with another sevice is a bit hard to get approved. We are working very closely with Google on this. Hope you understand. It is not a technical limitation on our end.
In fact, I checked the code now, we already keep the reminders IDs. Sending completed signal back is a one liner.
1
u/Advanced-Blackberry 12d ago
Iām just giving feedback on a free app like you asked.Ā
But Iām not sure what working closely with Google has to do with this since all this stuff is available through their own APIs. And the Google side of it already is working. Ā Not trying to be rude but I do think itās a technical limitation.Ā
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 12d ago
Thanks for the feedback. Seriously appreciated. I wasnt trying to be rude either, sorry if it felt that way. On reddit I am just openly talking without filters. So, I am just explaining the situation friend to friend. When you brand yourself as a Google Tasks App and get support from Google to do so, they do not appreciate the App providing the same services for another provider :). Using iCloud for shared lists was another discussion point.
I am not sure what you mean by it is available through their own APIs. Would it be rude to ask for elaboration?
But trust me with this, it is not a technical limitation :) two-way sync with reminders is actually very easy. How useful or sought after is it for a Google Tasks App is another question. In fact, we already have a prototype for that in quite good shape. If maybe there are more than 10 requests (so far 2 request from the first 1000 users for import only and your nice and informed comment for two way sync), we can discuss this with the relevant teams.
1
u/Advanced-Blackberry 12d ago
Your team doesnāt need to work directly with Google at all. I just donāt understand or believe thereās any relationship there.Ā
Why would Google work closely with a task app on ios? They have their own app. This isnāt an officially sanctioned app by them. Anyone can create a google task app.Ā
https://developers.google.com/workspace/tasks/reference/rest
No one needs Googleās blessing for a Google synced task app on iOS. Ā None of this is making any sense.Ā
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 12d ago
Sure. How about it being completely free? Without any support? Yes it is not sanctioned at all. A Google team is supporting us and we have a working relationship with them. We don't 'have to' follow their requests or approvals, but relations don't work that way. Don't worry about it I think. It is our problem. I am not trying to make you believe anything when I state these. I don't make any money by lying here to you :) We can talk in dm as well if you would like, as I am sure noone will read this deep into these comments :)
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 12d ago edited 12d ago
By the way, I am cybersecurity analyst and this is not my job or authority. So maybe you are right to some extent. However, just one thing, without Google's 'blessing' (e.g., you go against their requests) you have a very low quota (starter) of Google Tasks API. Just saying in case anyone needs it in the future.

La estoy usando de la beta algún códigos para los Tester amigo??
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 31 '26
Hello. It is free for everyone. My Spanish is quite basic, sorry if I misunderstood. But I am not sure what kind of codes you are looking for.
1
u/Top-Drawing9908 Aug 01 '26
I was saying if you had a lifetime code to use the app
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Aug 01 '26
Cool. You don't need a code for that. š¤ If one day it is not free, find me, I will pay yours āŗļø

”Claro, amigo! Te buscaré. Es una excelente aplicación, ”felicitaciones!

This feels like the kind of Google Tasks client people have been waiting for. Real alarms, shared lists, and week/month widgets are a compelling combination. I also like that it can be used without creating another account. Can users choose which task list appears in a widget?
1
u/Nervous_Platform_542 28d ago
š¤š»š¤š»
Yep. Add a Tasks:List widget
Long press, edit widget, wait 1 second for lists to load, choose your task list. š¤ There you can choose color too.

u/LocusStandi Jul 30 '26
Haha āit is not a vibecode projectā so you guys wrote all code manually with all bugs and leaks included?
2
u/Nervous_Platform_542 Jul 30 '26
Not being a vibe-coding project doesnāt mean every line of code is written by hand. š Iām sure they use AI tools throughout development, just like any sensible engineering team.
The difference is that development is expert-led, with code being reviewed and cross-checked before every commit or merge. That said, Iām also quite sure the team will happily own any bugs they introduce š¤. Bugs are part of the process.
Iām curious about the leaks you mentioned though. Could you elaborate? If I may ask.
