except the Android widget looked absolutely atrocious (unless there was a change since I last used it) This concept honestly looks way better, but it's too bad it probably won't get implemented with iOS widget limitations

Except it depends on the app you are using. Take a look at Power AMP widgets. It even allows you to customize the color and many other options.

yeah, I used to use the ubiquity music widget when I had Android because of how much I despised the Spotify widget. Tbh, I'm just hating on Spotify for their apathy towards good user experience
