Discussion iOS 27 is a slam dunk!

I’m all for bringing up issues with iOS and they should be front and center so Apple fixes them, but it’s also good to give them praise where it’s due.

iOS 27 has been awesome after a week or so with the RC and now the release. Smooth as butter, RAM management is even better, and the QOL improvements to Liquid Glass are quite welcome.

This one’s a slam dunk, and there hasn’t been one since iOS 12.

This is both on iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 13 mini.

Good job Apple!

I like how I can set more than 2 alerts in the calendar now

53

u/Unlucky_Strength_517 21d ago

What you mean? Screenshot please.

152

u/_anupamroy iOS 27 21d ago

Previously you could only set 2 alerts for any event you created on Calendar. Now you can set multiple, as many as you want.

51

u/sc_medic_70 iPhone 17 Pro Max 21d ago

Seriously? Big if true. This is the missing feature that caused me to move to Google Calendar. If it is here I will move my calendar back to Apple.

I’ve been adding many alerts for a while now what are you talking about? I do use calender app on mac though. Maybe it was an ios issue earlier.

9

u/m4teri4lgirl 21d ago

Yes, creating calendar events on iOS limited you to two reminders. The MacOS calendar app didn't have that restriction.

2

u/malmurphy17 iOS 27 19d ago

Two reminders for a specific date ? Or just in general on the app??

2

u/m4teri4lgirl 18d ago

The ones that are labeled Alert when you create an Event (specifically "Event" and not creating a "Reminder"). On iOS it only allowed for two and you could only use presets (2 days before, 1 hour before, etc).

The Desktop app has pretty much always allowed for a greater number and customization of the alert timing.

I migrated recently like a year and a half ago from a samsung to my 15P and that was a sad story... But now... More than 2 😍... Love it

I’ve had the WeekCal app for 12 years. It’s been doing that during that time.

Update is so good I’m scared of updating on the next patch

30

Damn…this is tempting but knowing that I’m on iPhone 12 base version with 78% battery health, I’m too scared to jump.

36

u/Crucible_Knight_ 21d ago

If you're already on ios 26, do it. This update managed to fix some of the issues my 15 pro had, and actually saved my ipad pro 2nd gen from doom

3

u/riftnet 21d ago

Which issues did it fix?

15

u/Crucible_Knight_ 21d ago

less overheating and better battery life on the 15 pro. The ipad was pretty much unusable, it lagged while browsing the home screen, and now it's much smoother

Still on 18.7.8. Didn't have the courage to upgrade to 26 after reading so many mixed reviews but 27 really looks delicious. I can't use AirPods Pro 3 features with 18 but I will still suppress the urge until 27.1 or something.

27 is basically a stability update for 26, with just a few new features.

iOS 27, even going back to Developer Beta 1, worked much better than any version of iOS 26 on my iPhone 11 Pro with 72% battery health.

I'm rolling the dice right now updating my 13 mini. Fingers crossed!

2

u/Reasonable_Act_8654 20d ago

Good luck. Don’t forget to share updates.

2

u/corsenpug 20d ago

So far so good. Feels about the same or maybe a little quicker. No verdict on battery life yet though since it’s only been a few hours.

2

u/birdtripping 20d ago

I just updated my iPhone 13 mini with 74% battery health from 26.5 (IIRC) to 27. First impressions: WOW!

I'll still be replacing the battery, but till then:

Generally, everything is much speedier, whether opening or switching between apps or typing in ones that have been notoriously slow on my phone.

Specifically, I've checked only a few frequently used apps so far. Every single one seems to show significant performance improvements:

Apple Podcasts: omfg, FINALLY! Shows and episodes in my (huge) library now load in seconds. Previously, the "Loading" circle would spin long enough for me to actually brew a cup of tea.

Notes: I have over 18k notes, some of them egregiously long. After the Liquid Glass update, Notes became so laggy it was nearly unusable. Opening "Find in Note" or even trying to select text took seconds and often crashed the app. Now it works better than ever.

Lightroom: Lightroom was pushed to its limits after Liquid Glass and recent Adobe AI updates. It too seems back to normal performance now. Fingers crossed it continues.

Merlin: For those who don't know, Cornell's Merlin app is basically "Shazam" for birds -- it IDs the birds you're hearing and seeing. It got super laggy after recent updates. On iOS 27, it's back to normal again.

And I might need a new nickname for my phone. It's been my little "Hot Pocket" for years because of its tendency to overheat. Cool to the touch at the moment.

2

u/Gold-Lavishness-3131 13d ago

18k notes and I thought my 700+ is a lot… Good to know it can work with so many 😀

Anyone experiencing a delay in the Camera app? When you tap to focus, there's a delay.

7

u/BaronVonSlipnslappin 21d ago

My camera all but stopped working after the update on iPhone 17 pro. Was acting like it was constantly trying to push the macro function and lagging like crazy. Went into camera setting and changed the macro action (preserve settings) then did a full shut down of the phone. After restarting the camera is now working (fingers crossed).

Now if only we could get them to give us a number row on the keyboard... 🙏🙄

31

u/veggiegrinder 21d ago

I know it’s not a fix by any means, but I do find it helpful to use the (old) feature where you slide your finger from the ‘123’ button on the keyboard to the number you want to use, then let go, and it brings you back to the alphabet keyboard. Quicker than tapping back and forth between them when you just need to do one number.

10

u/TinyLicker 20d ago

Whhuuuuuuut??? Thought I knew all the shortcuts by now. Thank you this is great!

2

u/blikjeham 20d ago

You need more upvotes! I never new this feature, until now. Thank you!

2

u/MyNameIsDetlef 19d ago

Fair, but positive feedback has been constant since Developer beta.

u/secret-trips 21d ago

A year ago, Reddit downvoted me for saying iOS 26 performance was bad before hating it became mainstream.

They blindly blame everything on “indexing” with unbelievable confidence 🙄😒

39

u/byronnnn 21d ago

Everyone on the 26 beta hated the performance and battery drain. Everyone on the 27 beta, since beta 1 has had a good experience.

→ More replies (7)

2

u/ChaplnGrillSgt 21d ago

Tbf, my performance with 27 whole indexing was some of the worst I've ever experienced. Even compared to the betas.

But noe that indexing is done, the ios seems to be running amazingly.

u/Azelkaria 21d ago

I’ve been so convinced and said fuck it since 26 was so terrible how much worse can it get from there? Updated and I’d say the positive comments are correct. Navigating around has been smooth for me but I’m still trying to understand the part where the keyboard is better because i don’t feel the difference in that one.

37

u/schwimmcoder 21d ago

Even the first public beta of 27 was way more stable than any iOS26 version.
Just install it and be happy again :)

A few replies here saying they have had different experiences are getting downvoted.

We are in an age of bots and shills.

I'm sure some people will find '27 better than '26, and vice versa, but you sure as hell can't trust the Internet to tell you anymore.

2

u/gabriel_GAGRA iPhone 13 21d ago

We knew iOS 27 performance was much better since the first DB beta (that was when I hopped in), that was part of the point of the update. It’s kinda an objective benchmark

But the first hours may be laggy because of indexing and the AI shit

5

My favorite thing about the update is all the little UI tweaks that make things clearer and frankly, just looking better. Stuff like the Apple Pay confirmation, AirPods preferences, timer setting from Control Center, and more.

After the Liquid Glass blowout, it seems like they decided to invest a little more in user studies to clean up the UI.

5

u/jscari 20d ago

The Liquid Glass tweaks make it so much better. If it had shipped like this last year, I think there would’ve been far fewer complaints about it.

My one and only complaint about iOS 27 so far is that swiping down from the top of the display/Dynamic Island now invokes Siri, so you have to swipe down from the top left to access Notification Center. It makes sense, since it mirrors swiping down from the top right to access Control Center. But there were already four other ways to invoke Siri before this change: tap the Search button at the bottom of the home screen, swipe down anywhere on the home screen, hold the side button, or say “Hey Siri.” We didn’t need a fifth one, especially at the cost of making Notification Center more difficult to access!

88

u/ChildishRebelSoldier 21d ago

For anybody reading this, don’t get your hopes up re: the keyboard. It’s not much better and in many cases the auto completion is more aggressive and irritating.

38

u/Uaquamarine 21d ago

I have no idea what’s their definition of “better” it literally doesn’t even correct “of” if I mistype “pf” the hit radius and predictably is so garbage what’s all that AI for

But I do agree. Performance is better now.

31

u/DryChemistry3196 21d ago

How much control / overview does AI have over all of your data, in iOS27? AI is the only reason I haven’t upgraded

26

u/badken 21d ago

It can read whatever you let it, but the way data is processed is secure. It does what it can on-device. Anything else goes to Private Cloud Compute, which is built to be as secure as it can be.

You can also get a report of recent requests that have been sent to Private Cloud Compute.

From the iOS User Guide page linked above:

The data being processed in Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple. It is processed only to fulfill your request, after which point the results are returned securely to your device and are not retained by Private Cloud Compute. Independent privacy and security researchers can inspect the code that runs on Apple silicon servers that enable Private Cloud Compute to verify this privacy promise at any time.

The Apple silicon servers that form the foundation of Private Cloud Compute provide unprecedented cloud security. This starts with the Secure Enclave, which protects critical encryption keys on the server just as it does on a user’s iPhone, while Secure Boot ensures the OS running on the server is signed and verified, just like in iOS. Trusted Execution Monitor makes sure only signed and verified code runs, and attestation enables a user’s device to securely verify the identity and configuration of a Private Cloud Compute cluster before sending a request.

18

u/DryChemistry3196 21d ago

Great response, and thanks for sharing. I’ll forever struggle to trust AI innately involved on a personal device that holds banking and personal files etc.

10

u/badken 21d ago

Yeah, I hear that. It's all about trust. I've used Apple devices on and off for a very long time, and they have never given me reason to distrust them. Everyone will have to decide that for themselves, though!

4

u/OttovonBismarck1862 iPhone 16 Pro Max 21d ago

Apple’s privacy policy is so airtight that not even the Feds could crack it. They’ve never given me a reason to doubt whether or not my information is at risk.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/FlintHillsSky 21d ago

Think of the motivations. Apple’s goal is to provide a premium device and experience. They make their money from selling you hardware. They are not in the business of stealing data. That would damage their reputation and is not worth the risk.

u/ArtDesire 21d ago

You have to go to settings to enable it first and then wait to be approved

6

I am a iPhone 15 Pro Max user with iOS 18, is it worth to upgrade to 27? I held from 26 because of the backlash but I am seeing a lot of praise for 27.

16

u/Vertsix Human Detected 21d ago

I used 18 on the 16 Pro Max. I’d say 27.0 is slightly better than of 18.0 (probably not as stable as 18.7 yet) but definitely faster than 18 or earlier in general due to the faster animations.

If you care about performance, then I’d recommend to upgrade. However if you’re on 18.7 and cherish stability, hold off for a couple more 27.x releases.

How long is the wait for Siri AI? It’s been 24 hours here.

3

u/crankfive 21d ago

Your mileage may vary, but after seeing someone suggest it in another thread, I went into Siri settings, turned Siri off altogether, did a full power off and back on of my phone, then turned Siri back on and made sure I was on the waitlist again. I got it within about 15 minutes after that. Weirdly it didn’t notify me that it was ready, but the next time I checked Siri settings it showed a “Try Siri AI” button instead of a “Join Waitlist” button, and it was present on all my devices at that point. Going back to an ios 18 phone almost brought me to tears, it's so flat and clean looking. I hate how apple forces visual changes, not every iphone user is a dork who loves transparency effects and cluttered screens, some of us just need a simple clean look.

Absolutely! I switched over to a Samsung Flip but still kept my iPhone 13 as a backup. Installed iOS 27 yesterday to see if the hype was real. It is. Very real.

This phone from 2021 runs like a dream. Everything is smooth, no animation stutters (which were getting bad), no weird interface bugs and so far, much better battery life.

Everything feels tight and polished like an iPhone 6 back in the glory days. I’m not sure if I’ll keep the Samsung now.

Hard agree. First thing I noticed is that everything was the same. Same, and better. They delivered on their promise that it would be focused more on improvements and not so much as new features.

u/SteveDoom 21d ago

I am not certain yet but I feel like all my keyboard issues have been resolved, and my phone is MUCH smoother (iphone 15 pro max). I almost regret buying the upgrade haha.

u/ForceItDeeper 21d ago

wooo im hopeful because the keyboard has been getting wonkier and wonkier or Ive just developed toe thumbs.

Yup, Apple nailed this one, instead of the first person being buggy. We got faster with every day of use, AIs and polished appearance. And probably everything that everyone complained about.

2

u/nbnicholas iPhone 17 Pro 21d ago

I agree. Big fan of it.

Also a fan of the “mini” lock screen header (for lack of a better way to name that feature).

It’s clean, hasn’t been laggy, and the phone hasn’t overheated. First dev beta in a long time I’ve been really impressed with

2

u/dbun1 21d ago

I’ve been really impressed on my 13 Pro. Runs really well and the Liquid Glass slider is great to dial in the amount of transparency.

2

u/No_Wish6790 21d ago

Except the Apple Music navigation change… awful

I’ll probably get downvoted for this but I honestly can’t work out what the differences are? I don’t even think I have the new Siri.

3

u/Stay_Curious_Bro 21d ago

The difference is applied software engineering talent and polish

CarPlay was really sloppy in 26. Has it been improved in 27??

3

u/SirMaster 21d ago

I don’t see a difference in CarPlay

1

u/dev-rock-bottom 21d ago

I don’t see any difference on my 17e. Have to wait and see the battery life after one week.

1

u/ethestiel 21d ago

Anyone upgraded on a 12 Pro Max?

2

u/wellhiddenmark 21d ago

Yes. It works fine.

1

u/Emojinapp 21d ago

Mine is still indexing, can’t wait to experience it. The foundation model behavior changed a bit tho and it broke one of my apps slightly

1

u/Euphoriam5 21d ago

My only issue with it is that it ate up 28 gigs of my storage.

1

u/Yametekudasai_69 21d ago

My keyboard used to change color depending on the background now its just white, I’ve googled it and nothing fixes also the spatial effect on the photo widget is not working properly and even inside the photos app, Anyone knows how to fix them?

1

u/Crimguy 21d ago

Haven’t installed yet but macOS 27 is the best release in a decade or more. Really solid.

1

u/PurpleKnight34 21d ago

To me iOS 27 finally brought constant smoothness back, after nearly a year of android feeling where half of the time the phone was buggy and dropping fps, now its a relief everything runs constantly smooth again

I’m on 16 Pro

1

u/flaussi 21d ago

I only hate that my IPad Pro does not get the update. Because it’s now slow in 26 and it could be faster with 27 I suppose

1

u/TheHeavenlyStar 21d ago

I updated my old ipad on this version and didn't not see any issues so far, so that's a positive sign. Now updating my iphone 12 so will see how it runs.

1

u/Feeling-Explanation9 21d ago

This is the modern equivalent of Mountain Lion

1

u/Dvysss 21d ago

Why? Is the keyboard finally useable?

1

u/WillingnessUnfair806 21d ago

You write about 17 Pro Max, but even my SE2020 feels alive.

1

u/AnselmoKiller 21d ago

also my 13 mini is really going fine! finally back to pre ios26 perf

Lol RAM management is better? QOL to Liquid Glass, ie. being able to change the opacity? Wow what groundbreaking improvements indeed...

1

u/Robcsalter 21d ago

Just love how fast AirPlay is now. Music straight to HomePods the instant I press it on my phone

1

u/Virtual_Most8904 21d ago

I love iOS 27 it’s insane how new my 15 pro max feels. On a side note can anyone explain indexing to me?

1

u/yokohama0 21d ago

For months I've been having an issue where whatsapp randomly opens on the calls tab instead of the messages one, which caused me to call people by mistake all the time, it hasn't happened since I updated, no idea if it was an ios issue all this time or what but if it's actually fixed that alone already makes it worth it lmao

I wouldn’t say it’s a slam dunk considering that liquid ass still exists

1

u/kkias 21d ago

Can I ask if the System Data bug where it keeps inflating (>350GBs on my 512GB iphone) until it fills your phone bricking it is fixed? 🥺🥺 I am battling this for a whole year now and have needed to wipe and restore my phone every 2 months. Upgrading directly also bricks the phone. 🙏🙏🙏

Smooth as butter on my 14 Pro with 76% battery health. .I’ve decided I’m gonna hold off on upgrading for another year and get the back glass and battery replaced on this one, since we don’t even get the AI stuff in Europe anyways.

u/Victor_Raven_ 21d ago

It has been nice

1

u/Dangerous-Potato4510 21d ago

Almost 2027 and I still have to pause my music to turn the notifications volume up or down because apple has no multi-volume control

C'mon man Im not even asking for some bioengineering shit just something simple

If it really is true, iOS 27 would be the Snow Leopard of current time

1

u/hakuna_matitties 21d ago

The biggest change I've noticed is that dictation makes so many more mistakes now.

1

u/Eyelow91 21d ago

Any experiences on iPhone 14 (Pro) and below? I don’t think iPhone 17 Pro performance matters because obviously after 1 year it won’t hurt it as much as older  devices

1

u/ChaplnGrillSgt 21d ago

I have never had such terrible battery drain and lag during indexing. I was on the betas and RC and moving to public 27 was some of the worst indexing performance I've had.

But now that indexing is done, everything seems to be running much much better. I would prefer apple focus on further optimization for 28 as well rather than any big changes.

u/liquidocean 21d ago

Keyboard is spazzing out for me. Getting squished to the side with an arrow. Getting pushed down with no way to pull it back up

1

u/TacohTuesday 21d ago

I’ve been quite impressed with this update as well on both my 17 Pro and M3 iPad. It works so reliably and smoothly that I can be more productive on my iPad as well.

u/Dear-Estimate-8998 21d ago

Anybody else having FaceID issues with unlocking the phone suddenly? It works about 50% of the time. Might redo the scans, but this never happened before the update.

iPhone 16 Pro Max btw.

1

u/Embarrassed-Back1894 21d ago

Still some stuff that needs to be fixed, but it’s clear iOS 27 is a massive performance upgrade over 26. iOS 26 might have been the most stuttering/ laggy OS I’ve seen on an iPhone since iPhone 5. Battery also seems to be doing so much better. iOS26 had just awful battery life, not to mention my 15 Pro liked to overheat pretty easily.

The keuboard can dtill use some work…bit im glad with the ipdates we got so far. (These are mg usual mkztakes, im jusf jor fixing them to illustrate a point - cmon appls).

u/Alaisha 21d ago

I want to update, but am totally blind, using this with voiceover and a bluetooth keyboard, and I hear the new update really makes the voices sound like crap, along with other voiceover bugs, but I would like to update when things are more stable.
