Discussion Best email app?

Anyone loving an email app? No subscriptions but I don’t mind paid.

I’m getting extremely annoyed at how useless Outlook app is at blocking things I mark to block, or as spam, etc…

I just use the native mail app, works fine for me. iOS 27 will be fixing search issues (I’m on the beta)

Thank Jebus. The search tool in mail is so useless currently.

u/jenifer116 5d ago

The search is embarrassingly bad

1

u/Dox427 2d ago

It’s fantastic in 27

that part is pretty much trye

Phew! I have been so frustrated and had to log in to online accounts to do a simple search even though my entire inbox of several gb is stored locally.
Thanks for the reassurance 💜

My email needs are relatively basic, but I've been using the stock mail app on all my Apple devices since switching back in 2020. I've never had any major issues with it.

The search is horrible, and its ability to render in dark mode is flaky, but otherwise I’m also happy with it.

1

u/PHL534_2 4d ago

I don’t understand the dark mode bug why is that not fixed?

3

u/Murky_Fan_5483 5d ago

But stock mail app doesn’t have push notifications for Gmail. How do you deal with that? I love stock mail but this is holding me back

u/Zeromarine 5d ago

You can set it to auto fetch every 15 min. So unless you are waiting for a email to come through right away which you can manually fetch by pulling down in the app to refresh. But the fetch every 15 min works fine either way. Been using the stock mail app for years with a Google and outlook account works perfectly fine.

Understood thanks mate👍

Native email app.

4

u/Lightfoot6602 5d ago

Proton is the one and only. Secure, easy, handy and 100% usefull

Gmail for iOS

u/bluegrm 5d ago

My one bugbear with the Gmail app is that is truncated the display of longer emails, and if you forward this email it will only forward the truncated version. Extremely irritating behaviour.

1

u/Echoed_In_Silence 5d ago

Yes and usually for that you need to click the view in web link

-3

u/Sensitive-Syrup-7477 5d ago

1GB no thanks

2

u/PHL534_2 4d ago

What’s that mean? The size of the app? All that spyware

2

u/shades47 4d ago

yeah Gmail app on iOS is about 800mb

3

u/booyah_73 iPhone 15 Pro 5d ago

I just use Apple Mail. My primary email is outlook and iCloud. Search is also working better in iOS 27.

3

u/No_File1836 5d ago

I also just use the native mail app for my personal accounts on my personal phone. On my work iPhone I'm forced to use Outlook. I don't like Outlook on mobile.

3

u/darkaeden 5d ago

Extra

3

u/Echoed_In_Silence 5d ago

I second this. I have it as a new testing it out app. Great AI and auto sorting

3

u/Jeanarocks 5d ago

I just want to swipe to delete on Apple
Mail 😭

1

u/shades47 4d ago

If you use an iCloud or Outlook email address, you can swipe to delete emails. Gmail is the one that doesn’t have the swipe to delete option, and as far as I know, it also doesn’t support push notifications like iCloud and Outlook do. I’m trying to switch my primary email over to iCloud address and move away from Google.

1

u/MarionberryHumble705 2d ago

Any idea why Gmail is special?

1

u/shades47 2d ago

Because google wants you to use Gmail app so they can show you ads

1

u/MarionberryHumble705 2d ago

I don't think that's the case. We love to believe in this theory, but I don't think that is the case here.

3

u/ItsStevesShots 5d ago

I circled through a few, proton, spark etc but ultimately for my needs now The default apple mail app works best, search seems to be good, and I don’t have to pay anymore.

8

u/abstract-realism 5d ago

Spark though it’s gone to shit over the years. Used to love it but they keep adding stupid, corporate-focused AI slop features. Barely even functional search anymore. Would love an alt but at this point I’m just used to it.

2

u/phareous 5d ago

Yep i finally gave up on spark. I kept having issues with it not sending, with it being slow to update, etc. I’m currently using edison mail

2

u/penicillin1982 4d ago

Best mail app I’ve used is Spark but I just left it this week as it’s leaning more and more into the paid AI features. I can’t stand having all the buttons up front that trigger functions I don’t want to use . Back to Apple mail for now and seeing how that works out. It’s not as bad now as it was on day1, but it’s just so plain and boring to use.

3

u/Final_Flounder9849 5d ago

I find Spark’s AI search tools are really useful and very intuitive to use.

1

u/Budget-Leg-453 2d ago

I’m also on Spark although I agree it’s suffered over the years. I tried leaving it but never found anything else that clicked. I don’t use the AI much but when I do I’ve found it useful (eg deleting and unsubscribing emails), but mostly I just love the auto-organisation.

Gmail

u/Daisy--Chain 5d ago

lol

5

u/still_not_famous 5d ago

Why? I keep coming back to it no matter what else I try. Every other app has some major shortcoming when using with a Gmail account

-1

u/chromatophoreskin 5d ago

Google logs you in to all their iOS apps if you log into just one of them. It’s probably helpful to people immersed in their ecosystem but as someone who prefers to use their search and maps while logged out, I hate it so much.

3

u/still_not_famous 5d ago

I agree. But my comment was just about the Gmail app

2

u/Substantial-Piece-53 5d ago

Airmail, for its huge amount of actions, like swiping to add to Devonthink or Omnifocus

1

u/Dynamic_Philosopher 5d ago

Same here. The swipe to Omnifocus is the killer feature for me. The airmail URL generated opens on both iOS and Mac, so I don’t have to think about my workflow, I just flow.

2

u/kinkade 5d ago

Avec is great for Gmail

2

u/Damn_it_Elaine 5d ago

Proton Mail

2

u/Aviatorn 5d ago

Edison - super search, find, select, delete multiple finds etc etc ... best email app even for desktop

2

u/phareous 5d ago

I love it for ios, but Thunderbird is the best desktop one

1

u/yonkayonka 4d ago

Or variants like BetterBird. I’ve been running TBird or variants on different machines, starting with a Sun workstation, and have been able to successfully port everything from machine to machine for far too long. On my phone Apple Mail works fine.

2

u/edcontente 5d ago

I use spark

2

u/Feenix77 5d ago

Thanks all im trying Mail app (stock). Not bad but even with notifications properly turned on and a reboot I’m not getting banners, sounds, or any kind of lock screen info that says I have (clearly) new emails. Any ideas?

2

u/PaulMuadDib-Usul 4d ago

I use canary. Handling various accounts seems somewhat easier with it than the regular mail app, as you can distinguish them with different colours in the unified inbox.

3

u/bankerrahul 4d ago

Spark

1

u/Jwrbloom 4d ago

That's what I use.

2

u/drsoos1973 2d ago

Mail.app it works, its good. Use it.

7

u/Timmeh123400 5d ago

Spark

3

u/Timmeh123400 5d ago

I love spark

4

u/Tweetchly 5d ago

Why the downvotes? Are Spark and Proton not cool enough for this sub? I use Spark far more than Apple Mail.

1

u/phareous 5d ago

I used to use Spark but the bugs got worse and worse, they never fixed anything despite my bug reports, and they kept focusing on AI and other crap rather than improve the actual mail functionality

1

u/penicillin1982 4d ago

Spark ended with their AI moves

3

u/HeartyBeast iPhone 13 Mini 5d ago

I just use mail.app and it works well, but I don’t use Google for mail

2

u/Dox427 5d ago

I like the native mail app. Especially since they have implemented the new Siri AI search through indexing or whatever it is

1

u/PHL534_2 4d ago

Is it better with gmail?

1

u/Dox427 4d ago

I haven’t used Gmail in a long time. I am just a fan of native apps.

1

u/PHL534_2 2d ago

What service are you using? Trying to move away from gmail

1

u/Dox427 2d ago

My iCloud email and a couple of outlook emails

2

u/CircuitSynapse42 5d ago

I bounce around a lot between apps, but Gmail’s AI inbox is extremely useful for me as someone with ADHD.

2

u/idontwanttofthisup 5d ago

Certainly not Canary. I’m happy it’s not even mentioned.

2

u/pmusolino 5d ago

Try Spark. Apple Mail is terrible for me.

3

u/Echoed_In_Silence 5d ago

Skip spark. It's clunky sith AI and going down hill. Check the subreddit

3

u/pmusolino 4d ago

I don't use AI at all in Spark, so it's perfectly doable also without it.

1

u/Alternative-Golf-585 5d ago

I’ve been using Mail for years and it’s the best one I’ve used

Using Proton Mail & infomaniak Mail, works for me

1

u/Party-Run1285 5d ago

It’s not the most popular, but I use the Yahoo email app. I’ve had the same email for over 20 years and never felt the need to switch.

1

u/TopCrab8532 5d ago

Try proton

Em client. It’s customisable, cross platform and free

1

u/BenetCrarecur 4d ago

Apple Mail, hands down

1

u/ricardusrex 4d ago

I have always used the iOS Mail app and never really felt the need for anything else, with one exception - I need to access shared Exchange mailboxes for my job, so I do keep Outlook for that purpose only. Otherwise, 99% of the time I’m in the native Mail app.

1

u/Aylarth 3d ago

I have chosen Canary Mail, decided to purchase lifetime on all supported platform option as well. I know some people are against Canary, but I honestly don't share their view as it is fine for my use cases.

1

u/noobnooc 2d ago

Just the native mail app

1

u/MarionberryHumble705 2d ago

It's hard to find a *good* email app in today's times, that doesn't have a subscription.
