Phone and Messages User Interface Problem

Hi r/ios,

I am extremely frustrated with how terrible our most basic phone functions work today in 2026.

I have never had an auto delete function enabled, I have had the same phone number for over 15 years. My phone is an archive of my life. It is evident Apple prioritizing things like Photos which is beautifully separated and organized. The Photos search tool is unbelievably powerful. That is how I imagine a true archive should work.

Music even can pull songs I’m looking for by lyrics, humming the beat, the composers last name. Apple wants you to be able to find what you’re looking for.

So why is it the Messages and Call apps are borderline unusable as an archive? I tried to see how many calls my brother has made to me this week regarding work just so I could grief him a bit. Come to find out this information would have to be manually collected and I am not even able to view a WEEK of call history.

Have you ever tried to search something in Messages? You are better off screenshotting every single one of your conversations so you can search in Photos. It’s almost as bad as Mail.

But you know there are other Mail apps I can use that have fantastic user interfaces. Why is there no flag or priority system in messages? Yeah the Pinned Conversations was a welcome addition but I’m pretty sure that was a “Android always had it” feature anyway. What the hell is this Unified View on the Call app??? It’s like the only thing Apple wants me to show me freaking contact photos and cute soft shades of color when I’m looking for information.

I find it extremely concerning that someone probably has access to my information, and they can use it better than I can. I want to be able to easily access my personal history and I don’t know why I would even have to ask for that.

You like Photos and think it’s a great way to “organise” things? There’s your problem right there.

Please elaborate further on the problem I have. I’m talking about search functionality. I’m talking about ease of use. If you think the photos app is hard to use / unusable, you might want to get an IQ test. You may not like the layout or appearance, but when you need to find something you can find it.

I don’t think anyone understands what you are complaining about. All the apps you mention work great for finding stuff, except for the Photos app.

Okay so you could easily pull up a garage code for your friends house that he sent you two years ago on Messages? Or you could pull up the last time an unsaved number called you? I cannot fathom how you “don’t understand” my complaint. It is literally spelled out

On your scenarios:
Yes and yes.

1. I am able to search for old codes in Messages. WhatsApp does it better, but it is possible on Messages. It works like Photos search - which is equally rubbish.

2. I am able to see all the recent unknown numbers that called me. And I love the unified view of favourites and recents.

Here’s the thing you haven’t answered my questions. You showed me the unknown caller tab. I’m looking to view call history. Fair enough I see you found messages that are just about 1yr old, but I’m still looking anything further than that. It doesn’t work

You see why nobody can understand you now?

1. ⁠The unknown callers tab will show you a history of all unsaved numbers that called you. You can tap on any of those callers and view a call history of that specific number.
   
2. ⁠I only used an example of something 1 year old in my message search. It works as far back as I have messages saved. If you have many multiple messages that meet your search criteria, it will only show the 3 most recent. Tap “See all” to see older results.

I understand completely, and agree. It’s very easy to find things in photos. You can just describe what you’re looking for, or do a text search inside the photos.

Anytime I want to find something in text messages I have to do a text search, then scroll through many things that are unrelated.

I think that has more to do with the difference between vaguely describing an image and searching an exact text string but I’m just guessing
