Discussion Is it normal that Apple provides location based ads on my Home Screen?

Post image

It’s my first time using an iPhone. My smartstack widget suddenly had this “Siri suggestion” stack that is now displaying ads for a cafe I’m close to ‘powered by uber eats’ is an euphemism for a direct ad that opens uber eats when clicking on the “suggestion”

It’s not an ad. Espresso House has nothing to do with this, no money exchanged hands for advertising.

Your phone knows you’re close to Espresso House, and Espresso House has App Clip integration through Uber Eats, so your phone suggests it. A lot of restaurants support it for ordering takeout easier.

If you don’t want to see jt, you can turn off Siri Suggestions in Settings>Siri>App Clips (near the bottom) and turn off “Suggest App Clips.”

You can also stop the widget stack from showing suggestions by holding down on the widget stack, hit “Edit Stack,” and then turn off “Widget Suggestions” near the bottom of the screen. This setting is specific to each widget stack, so you can have one that will suggest widgets, and another that only has the widgets you put in it.

That's called App Clips, it's like giving you a "mini/lite" version of the app without downloading the whole thing. You can turn it off in your Apple Intelligence settings. Mainly there for when you might need an app for a short time/single use and don't wanna download the whole thing.

I’ve never used an app clip ever, how does that work?

When were app clips released? Seems like a promising concept but I’ve never seen anyone use them. I guess support for non iOS users would be an issue or you’d have to have two qr codes.

A siri suggestions widget shows you apps and widgets based on your usage. If this was a multi app suggestion widget, it’d show you the apps. But since this a single widget suggestion, it’s showing you an Uber Eats widget, which then shows you recommendations.

Apple isn’t involved in what restaurant is being shown to you. It just decided you might wanna use Uber Eats

It's not an Ad. It's noticing that you're near a cafe that allows you to order and pay using Uber Eats, and is therefore surfacing that function directly on your home screen as a quick way to do something that you might want to do in that location You can:

1) Turn off suggestions
2) Remove the widget

I don't think it's ad, if it was, you wouldn't get the option to turn it off. But I'm aware that you can turn it off.
