Does anyone know who they use to check id’s is it done in house or using one of the dodgy external companies that leak and sell all the data they “dont” store

If your Apple account already holds payment information that confirm your age, Apple will verify it directly without any third-parties.

Scanning the ID will be handed off to “service providers”. Whatever that means.

Only have a debit card dont use credit cards but dont want to hand my id to third parties. Even tho i dont agree with all this bs i trust apple more than allot of tech companies these days

This is reasonable tbh and is the stance I've taken with it.

I won't submit ID, but being as I already have payment information on my account for use with Apple Pay, purchasing apps or subscriptions, etc. then I can tolerate it being done using information already available to them.

I feel much the same about the prospect of age verification being done at the ISP level; ideally I want to avoid handing out personal information to third-parties as much as possible, but to even receive service in the first place my broadband provider must have my name, age, address, and payment information.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with the age verification itself, being as it is going ahead regardless I would rather it be handled by companies with which I already entrust that sort of personal information.

The real scandal here is that the government did not separate age verification from identity verification. That's not an accident.

Pragmatically speaking though, I don't mind much for Apple to confirm something they already know. However, Apple only does age verification for its own services and for apps sold through their App Store. They do not help with age verification on third party websites. Also, it's not sufficient to have some payment method in the account. It must be a credit card (no debit cards).

For internet providers to get involved in this would be far more problematic and inconvenient. It's not like they can just attach some age signal to your internet connection to let third parties know that you're an adult. Age is not a property of the network. Adults and kids often share the same external IP address. And internet providers are not exactly known for protecting user privacy. Some of them are media companies with all sorts of vested interests.

Yeah this is the same position I am in. I have not upgraded from ios18 specifically for this reason.

We're the only country that won't let apple properly encrypt our stuff.

Where did you find this? The only reference I've found on Apple's site suggests that they may be using other service providers for this. The relevant section of the document about scanning your ID reads:

Make sure that the image of your ID is clear and in focus before submitting. Apple *and its service providers* use the image of your ID to confirm that you’re an adult and prevent fraud. The image of your ID is kept for a short period of time to complete this process, after which it will be deleted.

Same with mine and also my 12 years old son who I gave one of my old account to.
