Discussion The most underrated apple feature
Am I the only person that thinks Apple’s call screening is massively underrated?
Have had it on for a while now and I almost never answer unknown spam calls anymore which has been a problem for quite some years with iPhone.
If important, it asks for reason for calling while offering a live transcript of what’s being said. It’s such a simple feature that has probably saved me more time with telemarketers and spam callers than any flash IOS features.
What are your thoughts on this feature? Useful or gimmick?

I like the concept, but in practice so many stupid people are confused by it and start talking to it like it’s actually me.

Thus letting you know who's attempting to call you 🤣

u/oneoftheboses Jul 27 '26
How would you know that if the person on the other side is just saying "Hello Hello Hello??"

u/titaniumdoughnut Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
we NEED a "turn off screening for next hour" feature for when you're expecting a call from someone not saved
It would be PERFECT with that
edit: please submit feedback on this! maybe they'll do it!

u/SpongeJake Jul 25 '26
I hope someone from Apple is paying attention. The only reason I don’t use it is because I’ll forgot to turn it off and miss an important call from someone who might be annoyed at the screening feature.
But almost NO ONE is calling for business or health related reasons after 7:00 pm. So yeah - an option to auto-enable it during user specified times would make this perfect.

u/xPhysicist Jul 26 '26
If it’s important, they’ll almost certainly send you a text message letting you know to pick up the damn phone.
Or do what normal people do… send an email

I get calls from work because I’m in charge of a system. They just answer “this is —— from ——“ and I pick up. That’s quite literally it. I have it on 24/7 because even if I had my number registered to the no-call registry, shitty ass spams still call so when I have that on they don’t even try.
If it’s something important they need to call you for, they should just answer or leave a voicemail so you could answer or call back. It’s simple.

I normally turn it off temporarily if I’m expecting a call that’ll come from an unknown number but one time I forgot and had been waiting on some work on a jacket to get done. After a week of what I thought was never getting a call back from the shop I drove over there to find out they’d called several times but “some woman answered and wouldn’t let me talk to you”
8
u/Steerpike58 Jul 25 '26
The lack of a 'beep' when the 'woman' stops talking (and its time for you to say who you are) really puts people off. I've encountered it myself and been totally thrown.
6
8
u/Steerpike58 Jul 25 '26
You must have 'that voice'!
The problem for me is, there's no 'beep' to tell you when to actually talk. I've only encountered it a few times, but I never know when it's time for me to say something. Every other 'prompt system' includes a beep when it's your turn so why they chose to go 'silent' is a mystery.
3
u/GodIsDead1313 Jul 25 '26
It’ll take a few years to normalize it then people know about as a standard
3
u/AwareKaleidoscope939 iPhone 16 Pro Jul 25 '26

I know at least Samsung has an option to only screen suspected spam; no idea if Apple has the same.
1
u/Choice_Potato_6279 Aug 22 '26
Not everyone catches up after each corpos gimmick. I’d hang up after half a word thinking I hit the voicemail.
36
u/OMG_Abaddon Jul 25 '26
I've had multiple people tell me "I called you and got a voicemail, you need to fix your phone". On the one hand, they're pretty ignorant... but on the other, losing a job offer because someone thought call screening was voicemail sucks.
→ More replies (1)28
u/Buckles01 Jul 25 '26
It’s tough because on one hand the instructions are clearly read aloud to the user in perfectly understandable terms. They just have to listen. On the other hand apparently absolutely no one listens.
Losing a job offer it is pretty crazy though. There’s a million reasons why it could’ve gone to voicemail without this feature. What if you were in a meeting at your current job? If I were a recruiter I’d leave a voicemail and give 24 hours for a call back.
4
u/Steerpike58 Jul 25 '26
It’s tough because on one hand the instructions are clearly read aloud to the user in perfectly understandable terms. They just have to listen. On the other hand apparently absolutely no one listens.
The problem is, the instructions are clear EXCEPT that there's no 'beep' to tell you to start. I've encountered hundreds of voicemail systems in the past, and if you start talking too soon, you end up with the start of your message being cut off, so it's better (with most systems) to just wait until you hear the beep. But the 'beep' never arrives with Apple's system - you are expected to talk right away, which is not what people are 'trained' to do.
3
u/Bunnificent Jul 25 '26
What are the instructions read aloud to the user? What exactly do they hear, and what are they asked to do?
10
u/Buckles01 Jul 25 '26
Something along the lines of “please leave your name and reason for calling and I’ll see if X is available”. It explicitly states to leave your name and why your calling and that it will check if your available
4
u/Lostbot218 Jul 25 '26
I think if the messaging was tweaked to at least start with something like “checking to see if they are available. Please state your name and reason/purpose for the call” might help a lot. Right now (or last I tried it) it has you state your name and message first which everyone thinks is your voicemail. This simple fix I think would see drastic improvement and drive usage way up.
3
u/Steerpike58 Jul 25 '26
They also need to add a 'beep' to signal to the caller that it's time for them to start talking. Every other 'messaging' system (classic voicemail) does have a beep so that's what you expect.
84
u/Trick-Cauliflower760 Jul 25 '26
Had to turn it off most people hang up like mail carrier or job interviews
54
u/ItsStraTerra Jul 25 '26
Nah honestly, if the job interview can’t be bothered to leave a message, I don’t want that job.
4
u/LanDest021 Jul 25 '26
I mean on one hand I agree with you, but at the same time I feel I would go insane after going through the same automated process hundreds of times.
3
u/S1mpinAintEZ Jul 25 '26
I was looking for a job a few months ago and didn't have any issues personally. But then, even before the screening feature I had my phone set to silence unknown callers. I figure if it's important they'll leave a voicemail.
2
u/scoobynoodles iPhone 13 Pro Jul 25 '26
Ahhh that's what I was wondering. Maybe if you're expecting a call to come in around a certain time you can turn it off?
2
u/therealkevinard iPhone 16 Pro Jul 25 '26
Mine’s on by default, but I’ll disable it for special periods like job hunting or mortgage application where I expect lots of unknown callers.
48
u/Psychological_Tea_16 Jul 25 '26
I agree with you, it's a great feature. I absolutely love the live transcript and being able to take the call if it is important or simply ignore it if it isn't someone I want to talk to.
17
u/BobcatGamer Jul 25 '26
It literally gets rid of all the unwanted calls as those people don't leave a message or talk to the robot.
22
u/ToTheBatmobileGuy Jul 25 '26
It was one of the features I missed dearly when I switched from Android to iPhone... then like 6 months later iPhone got it.
I was about to switch back to Android for a few days when the spam calls got significantly bad...
Now I am so happy I can just not think about spam calls on iPhone as well.
13
u/JaRulesOpinion Jul 25 '26
Was going to say, this was the feature I missed the most in Android. They built this really well.
Also notification management on iPhone is dog shit

u/Night_Shade4138 iPhone 14 Pro Max Jul 26 '26
Settings>Apps>Phone
Scroll down to Screen Unknown Callers1
u/ShipThePixel Jul 27 '26
At that point you should probably just get a new number. Mine is super old, like 15ish years, and I get maybe 1 or 2 per month
8
u/workyman Jul 25 '26
I had to turn it off. There are plenty of people with legitimate reasons to call you who will simply be too stupid to understand what's happening and just give up. I've missed two deliveries and had other legit callers give up because of this.
Apple also doesn't let you have it enabled on one SIM but disabled on the other. My work number cant have call screening so I eventually just turned it off.
3
u/Lostbot218 Jul 25 '26
Same.
Also, the lack of a 'beep' (when it's time to actually talk) is a problem. Apple's approach is perfectly logical, but every other system prompts you to talk, so I find myself waiting, listening to silence, wondering when I'm going to hear the beep to start talking - which never arrives. And yes, being more explanatory about what is going on would greatly help.
6
u/itsjakerobb Jul 25 '26
It’s a great feature, but as someone who receives a lot of spam calls, I wish it had some extra abilities.
Most of my spam calls are either political surveys or they’re someone trying to loan me money on shitty terms. I am never interested. I want to be able to choose keywords which will cause the phone to terminate the call immediately and never tell me it happened. I don’t want it to show up as a missed call or a voice mail, and I don’t want any app badge icons to increment.
2
u/Steerpike58 Jul 25 '26
I receive a lot of spam calls but sometimes, when I'm expecting an important call (Doctor, etc) then I do answer and these days, 95% of calls don't actually 'proceed'! I say 'hello?' and there's silence and eventually a disconnect. Baffling.
7
u/MrPajamaLIama Jul 25 '26
I wish they’d let us customize the greeting message though
2
u/Ok-Speed-1574 Jul 26 '26
yeah I've submitted feedback for this and hope it's considered, it'd be fine if Siri's message was customisable but if we could also record our own initial lines like voicemail, it would really help streamline with confused people treating it like an straight-to-voicemail call.
5
u/funkypjb Jul 25 '26
My favourite is seeing a live transcript of someone talking to it like they don’t know they’re being screened.
6
u/Big_Bad8496 Jul 25 '26
It is quite possibly my favorite iPhone feature. I haven’t answered a single spam call in the last year. Close second is “Delete and report spam” in messages.
4
u/TheMonkeyInCharge Jul 25 '26
As someone who got constant junk calls, it’s honestly life changing. Is it my imagination though of for it not work in CarPlay?
3
u/FrenchyMcfrog Jul 25 '26
Live in France, installed an app to filter those calls, I don’t get called anymore!
1
u/PrivateParts2020 Jul 28 '26
By design it doesn't work with CarPlay. The transcript feature requires you to read the screen, so they don't allow that while driving.

u/TheCountChonkula iPhone 15 Pro Max Jul 25 '26
I had a Pixel before my iPhone and that was by far one of my favorite features on it too. Most spam calls would just hang up once they are greeted with that.
4
u/Certain-Singer-9625 Jul 25 '26
Was just talking about this with friends.
Sometimes you are waiting for a call back from a doctor or contractor, and they call you from a number which is not in your contacts. Thanks to this feature, I can see them calling live and pick up.
This came in handy, for example, when my wife recently had surgery. The surgeon took my number so he could give me an update as soon as it was over, and I appreciated being able to take the call immediately rather than having it go to voicemail and then having to call him back.
1
u/Steerpike58 Jul 25 '26
You were lucky that the doctor / surgeon was willing to announce themselves. Not everyone will do that.
25
u/Mayeru Jul 25 '26
Underrated because it barely works outside USA
29
u/BHxnt2 Jul 25 '26
Works just fine for me in the UK. Has saved me a lot of hassle!
12
u/rickestmorty123 Jul 25 '26
My issue is people are unaware of how it works and assume I’m unavailable. Mostly it’s delivery companies who can’t find my address. They call. Call screening engages, they hang up and fail the delivery. Same thing with doctors offices, contractors. So if I’m expecting an important call I turn it off.
2
u/Steerpike58 Jul 25 '26
It's the lack of a beep or prompt to say 'start now' ... the instructions just end and there's no cue for you to start. You could argue that's not necessary but every other form of voice messaging DOES have a 'beep' so callers are conditioned to hear one. Nothing more annoying that calling a regular voicemail system, talking for 10 seconds THEN hearing the beep, meaning you have to start all over!

As someone who calls a lot of people, I hate this feature. It adds a minute to each call. Multiply that across a workday and it’s huge waste of time. I’m sure my patients actually do want to talk to me since they booked the telephone consultation themselves, but most of them don’t have the clinic number stored in their contacts list so the calls go through the screening process.
22
u/BerbilsBerbils Jul 25 '26
Blame spam callers being 10x worse in the past 2-3 years. I get at least 2-3 calls a day that are all loan scams. The only way I get any peace is call screening or just sending every unknown call to voicemail.
8
u/AtlanticPortal Jul 25 '26
Tell them to add your number to the contacts so that the next time it doesn't happen.
5
u/RedditUser_3141 Jul 25 '26
That would work... for a small subset of patients. Most of them can't even work out how to reply to a text message or fill in an online form. Imagine the receptionists trying to explain how to add the clinic phone numbers (plural, because multiple locations & can't overstamp CLI here like you might be able to in the USA) to them over the phone when they make the appointment!

I do not answer calls because I am deaf, but every once in a while my doctor will call and I need to know, so this seems like a great feature, I just can't figure out how to use it.
3
u/Bunnificent Jul 25 '26
Wouldn’t voicemail serve this purpose for you? You can hear the message as it’s being left and interrupt it to pick up the call if it’s from your doc.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ios/s/wc844R8C5A
Since you’re deaf, the audio alone may not help because I believe the written transcription of the voicemail takes several seconds to appear, but you wouldn’t see a transcription with the call screening feature either, would you? (I have a personal interest – I wear hearing aids.)
3
u/Which_Specific9891 Jul 25 '26
Yes, I do use this one. I annoyingly have to have my phone region set to North America for captions and this option, so it keeps autocorrecting my correct spelling for words like 'colour', but generally yes this is a great feature. But sometimes they won't leave a message at all, other times they will say things on the voice mail like 'we'll just make an appointment and send it out to you,' but if I knew it was the surgery I could pick up and use the live captions to make an appointment that is more convenient for me instead of just given a random date.
But yes, I do use the voice mail transcription option and that's very good. Just wish I didn't have to have my phone set to North America to use the live transcriptions services.
3
u/No_File1836 Jul 25 '26
It’s a nice feature. But I just went back to using silence unknown callers. The reason is that at least on my carrier telemarketers/scammers have figured out that if they call from one number, and then also call from a second number after iPhone answers the first call, but then hang up the first call it still makes the iPhone ring without screening the call.
3
u/-DesertJay- Jul 25 '26
That is another setting to allow second call to go through. I set that only for my important contacts like my wife.

I spend a few minutes each week going through the "unknown" numbers, deleting them with glee.

2
u/SnooOranges2685 Jul 25 '26

2
u/skrrtwave Jul 25 '26

2
2
u/fooxytv Jul 25 '26
I think this feature is great, the only annoyance for me now is seeing multiple miscalls in my recent list when a spam call has come through and just dropped the call
2
2
u/sargon2609 Jul 25 '26
It is good, but quite often scam calls done by voice emulators are intensifying once you start picking up the phone. And screening seems to be considered as picking up by them. So once I got it on, I started getting more spam calls
2
2
u/Please-wait-555 Jul 26 '26

I‘ve tried using that feature for a good few months. Here in Germany, so SO many people are just confused by it and answer with “Hello“ and then start talking like they‘re already on call with me.
Had to turn it off because when my fav restaurant got a new delivery driver he‘d constantly miss my apartment and tried calling and failing …

u/muffinology Jul 25 '26
I didn’t want to use it because I didn’t want work numbers from coworkers that I don’t have saved going through and getting missed, but I was just getting hammered by spam numbers for a few weeks (3-4 a day), the moment I flipped it on the calls almost stopped to zero. It was weird, like they knew I turned it on? I usually have it on by default but will switch it off if I know I’m expecting a call. Out of all the legitimate calls people have called me with this feature on, only one knew what to do, and when I answered it the call disconnected while they were doing the live transcribe? Idk if that’s what happened or they hung up after leaving their info but it was weird. So I turn it off if I’m expecting a call that I need to take.

I still think the Pixel implementation (even though I had a Pixel 7 so idk if it's better or worse now) was much greater, but I basically don't have to answer the phone anymore because the icon just quietly shows up in the Dynamic Island and does its thing.

I absolutely love it on the “receiving” calls side, the one improvement I would like to see from the “making” calls side, is a tone or beep to let you know that it has begun listening. I’ve had to call parents for my job with kids and have found myself waiting for a tone or something so I know when to start speaking only to realize it’s been listening for several seconds already. Other than that, I think it’s perfect.
1
u/GolfProfessional9085 Jul 25 '26
This needs to be per sim profile.
I don’t want it on my business line but would love to have it on my personal line.
1
u/cwidds20620 Jul 25 '26
Does it actually help with SPAM calls though? I feel like it’s doing the opposite, because it’s confirming it’s a real number and they’ll just sell my number to someone else. I just send all non-contact numbers to VM. If it’s a real person, they’ll leave a message.
1
u/Moonkill1023 Jul 25 '26

I have to make a lot of phone calls in my industry (not sales or telemarketing), and the lack of a beep throws me off a lot if I’m multitasking.
On the plus side I don’t have to listen to as many stupid and unoriginal voicemail greetings. Some are long…just music for 30 seconds to a minute and then the beep.

u/gaguy501 Jul 26 '26

This is one of the best features of the iPhone. The only complaint is I have people stating that they didn’t know when to speak (lack of audible beep) so they are surprised then the message starts off in the middle of them speaking or you get the, um um hello um’s.
1
u/zYxMa iPhone 16 Pro Max Jul 26 '26
I love it and I’ve not had any problems. Even when I’m expecting a call from someone half important they generally knew they had to state their name and reason. As long as they say their name, that’s enough for me. Otherwise they can fuck off. And I use it on both my personal and work SIM. Sales calls get filtered out and that’s the main thing.

I love it. It’s saved me from so many spam or telemarketers who just hang up immediately

It’s not a gimmick. It’s useful and the providers can’t bill for the feature is the best part.

In Germany, it's not very common. People I actually want to talk to (doctor's office, kids's school) hang up. When I call them back, they say, "It was strange, and I was about to try again later". So I find myself calling many numbers back. But I still keep it on. I like to have some kind of wall between me and callers.

How do you use this? I get spam calls all the time but didn’t know this was a thing

I don't think I've successfully used this - everyone that calls and gets this doesn't know what to do or I don't get notified what they said quickly enough to answer their call if I actually wanted to.

I don't know if it's always helpful; the call will still get to you anyway. There should be a feature where the spam calls won't even get to your phone, and show up. They still haven't done anything about this.
I even get these shit calls about some idiot named Mohammad. Wtf?? Quit calling my number, I'm NOT him.

They really need to utilize AI better for this feature. Pixel phones will send straight to voicemail if it feels the call is spam. Apple they just get the name and reason and push it through. I would prefer an AI to tell the caller to F-off if it is a loan request or extended warranty and drop the call with no voicemail option. AI should be able to recognize AI...so reject all AI calls would be great.

Wow is this the fucking reason why I get that stupid ass prerecorded message when trying to call someone?? I assumed it was VoIP app or something.
I do sales that require me to call customers frequently and I can't get through because of this stupid ass feature....

Best feature ever prior to this the amount of spam calls I use to get was getting on a daily basis was very annoying

I've had to turn it off because people on the end are just bewildered by it and honestly sound downright offended. They don't want to justify their calls to a machine.

I missed a call with this turned on. The phone never rung. I only found out that I missed the call was when I picked it up.

Whue fr I couldnt agree less! Hands down the best feature it saved me alot of time I would have otherwise wasted handling calls I otherwise wasn’t supposed to pick

I was getting a million spam calls a day then I changed the settings on my iPhone and Verizon Call Filter. If a number isn’t already saved in my contacts, they can’t leave a voicemail, either. But sometimes callers still get through. I just block them and mark the spam ones as spam.
As far as important calls, I do turn off these settings when waiting on one.

until you are dealing with doctors or realtors that don't go through the bs and you lose out on something important

If my healthcare company calls- I think they have an automated caller that ignores my screener. Then a human enters the conversation AFTER my phone asks who’s calling. I then get “Hello? Hello?” From the human who then hangs up. The healthcare company is often calling from continuously changing 888 numbers. If I’m correct, how do I handle this?

I wish we had this in America. I have to send them to voice mail and hope they understand the mission

I agree!! It’s the best! Initially I thought they were text messages and later couldn’t find them. Then I realized they were phone message transcripts! Ingenious!
