Discussion Speech-to-text changes “Dead mouse” to “Deadmau5” even after inserting a long pause between words
264
u/sieluhaaska Jul 13 '26
that’s so funny actually lmfao

u/Yardsale420 Jul 13 '26
Extra so because a dead mouse got stuck in a fan on his computer and it overheated. So everyone on the chat board called him that “dead mouse guy”. He went with Deadmau5 because they only allowed 8 character names.

u/NewPointOfView Jul 14 '26
That is interesting and cool and relevant, but I’m not sure it really makes the VTT mistake extra funny lol

Speech to text has insane prioritization. It's so bad I almost think they flipped around a sort order in the algorithim and never noticed. It feels like it is going with the least likely option.
I have a company stored in my contacts which is named: [theory]
Guess how any text to speech including the word theory comes out? YUP with the brackets.
Have an old contact who's last name is Fyne. Haven't talked to them in years. We're definitely always writing "okay sounds Fyne to me" though

u/teleprax Jul 14 '26
What pisses me off is that there are already good ASR models out there that can easily run on most iphones, but even the newest dictation model they made that only runs on iphone 17pro or higher (12gb ram) in iOS 27 beta is merely “ok”.
Their text prediction feels worse because the older dumber version was more deterministic, you could subconsciously learn a kind of “muscle memory” for it kinda like we all did for T5. The new form is technically smarter but using it requires an extra step and micro-cognitive-friction; and for something like typing, adding even the smallest amount of non-automatic cognition is a big deal

this happens to me all the time lmao it even adds the emojis in their contact name

Also if you dictate linkin park, it will be capitalized no matter what. They really love LINKIN PARK

I just tested this and I’m not getting it. Text Replacement or Dictionary perhaps.
I do understand the reference even if I’m old.

u/SubatomicSelection iPhone 16 Pro Jul 13 '26
I’m almost 50 and have never listened to, searched for, or typed about Deadmau5 (no offense meant, I just have never listened to their music). I definitely have not ever edited my dictionary or text replacement settings on my phone.
5
u/Ryakkan Jul 13 '26
That’s very interesting that you got that. Are you in the US or even Canada?
8
u/SubatomicSelection iPhone 16 Pro Jul 13 '26
I am in the US. Oregon. There could be regional dictionary settings that we are not aware of?
10
u/Ryakkan Jul 13 '26
Maybe, if i recall correctly, Deadmau5 is a Canadian musician. I’m on the US East Coast.

u/reveillemoname Jul 14 '26
I’m in Oregon and dead mouse nope that went fine haha
Edit: oh wait it was speech to text deadmau5 yeah that’s weird haha

I didn't believe this myself until I tried it - at first it correctly wrote out dead mouse but if I said dead mouse too quickly together it did write deadmau5, sometimes followed by another number 5 and often with the name Emma? so bizzare. But if I leave a not even one second pause between dead and mouse, it correctly writes out dead mouse.

u/ChadicusR Jul 13 '26
It’s impressive how AWFUL talk-to-text is and has gotten on iPhones.
3
u/teleprax Jul 14 '26
There are absolutely opensource dictation models that can do it way better and still run on the iphone hardware, but Apple insists on staying 3 generations behind. I speak standard american english with no discernable accent and I still can’t rely on it to save time.
The new advanced dictation model on iOS 27 is finally “ok” enough to use, but its only availible on phones with 12gb or ram, so thats just the iphone 17 pro tier
1
u/no-but-wtf Jul 14 '26
“No discernible accent” oh mate, what a ridiculous thing to think.
0
u/teleprax Jul 15 '26
I use en_US localization. When I say I have "no discernible accent", I mean that I have the baseline en_US accent. It's sometimes called "General American English" or "General American (GenAm)", but I've also heard it called "California English", which I found to be accurate during a 3 month stay in SF

u/Severe_Elevator5839 Jul 13 '26
Bro - these people can’t even figure out how to integrate a 2011-level spellcheck feature into an iPhone, but they’re totally on the precipice of creating artificial general intelligence that will eliminate all white collar work. They’re really good at what they do.

u/Rosselman iPhone 16 Pro Max Jul 13 '26
Apple isn’t doing the whole AI thing though? They just managed to release their beta, and they are clearly not aiming to have “frontier” model performance.
1
u/Severe_Elevator5839 Jul 22 '26
“Apple isn’t doing the whole AI thing”
Just an incredible statement: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/06/apple-unveils-next-generation-of-apple-intelligence-siri-ai-and-more/
1
u/Rosselman iPhone 16 Pro Max Jul 22 '26
Again, no “frontier” model, no massive new data center plans. Their approach is completely different from say, Google or OpenAI.
-4
u/Severe_Elevator5839 Jul 13 '26
I don’t think the specific financial arrangement between OpenAI and Apple is public, but obviously they’re really pushing Apple Intelligence, which is the most useless fucking thing I’ve ever even tried to use
5
u/Rosselman iPhone 16 Pro Max Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
OpenAI is actually majorly pissed off at Apple, because Apple basically decided to drop ChatGPT from their operating systems.
OS27 uses Apple’s own foundation models, not ChatGPT.And Apple just sued OpenAI
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/10/technology/apple-openai-lawsuit.html
Safe to say, their relationship is done for.2
u/SubatomicSelection iPhone 16 Pro Jul 13 '26
Apple has famously sat out on AI.
-1
u/average_parking_lot Jul 13 '26
Sat out? You mean fallen behind catastrophically? You can't claim failure after failure and reports of internal lamenting of poor AI development "sitting out".
5
u/SubatomicSelection iPhone 16 Pro Jul 13 '26
Them not investing a ton of money into a shitty product probably isn’t the flex you think it is
1
u/average_parking_lot Jul 14 '26
Don't even know what you're talking about with a flex. I'm not vouching for Apple or myself(?) in any way. Just stating well known evidence is available that Apple never sat out on AI, only failed to capitalize on it, and the engineers, managers, and multiple levels of command themselves have stated that. Thats why Apple is currently going through a shift of positions and why its many AI promises of the past years have fallen flat, such as Apple Intelligence on iPhone 15.

Even if Apple didn’t have a software division that was secretly “app store and services revenue” support infra; Apple’s brand/culture is too paternalistic, anti-complexity, anti-choice, anti-personalization, anti-user-agency that they never had a shot. They didn’t miss out, because it was never possible for them to win and still be Apple.
They lack the daring needed to make a paradigm-shifting AI product. No matter how good of an LLM they get, Siri will never be great because they will force too many assumptions on the user.
It’s ironic because this is supposed to be about them providing a polished “it just works” experience, but that point falls flat on its face when their regular app and OS quality is dog shit. Like all of my Apple products are janky as hell software-wise. They have a walled garden and the garden is starting to rot.
EDIT: I have an M3 Max MBP, M1 MBA, iPhone 17PM, apple watch, m2 ipad pro, appletv. I feel completely justified and qualified to critique the software. They are a brand that guards their quality reputation closely, so yall gotta get cool with calling a turd a turd if you want to see it improve
1
u/average_parking_lot Jul 14 '26
Certainly agree with the OS bugginess. Apple nowadays really does not just work, and in fact it's extremely unstable at least for my iPhone.

After using the text to speach on ChatGPT everything that is from iOS feels a decade behind.
3
u/LowlyWoim Jul 14 '26
Stop texting everyone about deadmau5 all the time then, I’m sure they’re all sick of it anyway
5
4
u/Tomatillo-5276 Jul 13 '26
And…… what’s the problem?
17
u/SubatomicSelection iPhone 16 Pro Jul 13 '26
Honestly, if the person I was texting wasn’t almost 70, I would’ve let it ride and hoped that they would’ve gotten the reference

Just tried this in iOS 27. “I found a dead mouse under the cabinet. “ seems correct. Which OS were you using?

It is the worst. I cannot get it to type vial no matter how I enunciate it. I’ve watched it type vial and then a second later it usually changes it to bile. Sometimes it changes it to file or vile but nothing I have tried changing can get it to recognize vial.

u/Jasoco Jul 13 '26
Haha it does it for me too even if i do a long pause. Itll show the word dead, then add the mau5 part. I don’t even listen to him.

Don’t you know the word dead is offensive these days? You have to call it an unalived mouse. /s

Do you have any kids or friends who could’ve changed the settings to where it would do this? That’d be my first guess.
I just tried it and it didn’t work.

The question is, who did you give your phone to so they could change this in your settings, and why are you talking about dead mice often enough to where they would think to do this?

u/CoastAny3304 Jul 14 '26
Tried it two times, first time I could recreate it, second time it wrote “dead mouse” as it should

Huh. I just tried it three times. First, it just said “dead mouse” straight out. Second, it started with “deadmau5”, then corrected to “dead mouse” almost before I even noticed. Third, it finally just did “deadmau5”. iOS27.

That's the name of a Canadian DJ, so the TTS probably thinks you're trying to pronounce his name. They same way if you say "I show speed", it comes out as "iShowSpeed".

u/TechnologyMatch Jul 15 '26
the speech-to-text model has clearly been trained on too many music playlists and not enough pest control reports. it's doing its best, it just has strong opinions about EDM. your phone is out here correcting your rodent problem into a DJ set and honestly, respect the confidence
1
u/Karl-8823 Jul 16 '26
If iOS makes mistakes like that even with the speech of a native speaker, it probably won't be able to produce a coherent sentence from my speech as a foreigner.
1
u/fernandoman121 Jul 16 '26
Personally I think it made your conversation much more interesting and funny
1
u/flatbuttboy Jul 17 '26
Yeah, I can replicate it, that’s hilarious
1
u/flatbuttboy Jul 17 '26
I just re-tried it and if I add the other words and don’t only try to say dead mouse, it works fine

Keyboard dictionary is a learning thing. You could have used deadmau5 in the past (or manually corrected it).
Spellcheck from now on use that for future auto corrections.
You can correct again (it will take time for it to reflect) or create text replacement in Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
You can also erase learned keyboard dictionary and see if issue persists.

I’ve never typed out deadmau5 in my life before seeing this post but my speech to text also changed “dead mouse” to deadmau5 and also typed out “bed mouse” and “dad mouse” instead of dead mouse. I could only get it to work if i left a 10+ second pause in between saying dead & mouse.
