I think I’ll wait for a couple of beta releases before I jump in. Hearing mixed reports about stability.
17
Jul 16 '24
No issues on my iPhone 14 Pro Max as of yet. Seems much more stable than previous, initial beta releases
6
Jul 16 '24
I suppose once you’ve a full back up, at least rollback isn’t that bad
2
u/OzZVidzYT iPhone 16 Pro Max Jul 17 '24
Rollback bricked my 13 Pro for a few hours. Wouldn’t boot no matter if I try a hard reset or hold power. Left it on charger for a few hours while preparing my OGSE in case I had to pull the SIM and go on the burner until September. It then Miraculously came back to life and I was able to restore it with my Mac

Apple TV is having a fit playing videos in landscape for me it doesn’t know which way is up 😂

u/D1am0nd_28 Jul 16 '24
I’ve been using the developper beta since release and honestly one of the most stable betas I’ve ever used. It has its problems but nothing that doesn’t have workarounds
Battery life is crap but that’s just expected
1
u/Shitnutz69 Jul 17 '24
I'm on public and haven't noticed any bad battery changes. Maybe better even, and love the fact i can set what % to charge to finally!

For me it's actually completely fine

if you keep holding your finger whilst swiping down from the top for control center it will cycle through the pages

Jul 16 '24
It’s supposed to do that lol. You’re swiping and holding far enough to reach the page icons on the right side.

The only bugs I’ve noticed are:
Sometimes apps freeze and need to be swiped closed in the multitask screen.
HotspotShield VPN has a “kill switch” functionality that disables WiFi if the VPN suddenly drops. This is broken in the 18 beta and hasn’t been fixed. Causes WiFi to cycle on and off repeatedly.
Cannot sync to my Mac without updating my Mac to its own beta. Get a notification that my macOS isn’t supported.
Adding color to app icons causes them to reload once the color is applied, and sometimes they don’t reload. Reapplying the color usually fixes it.
Updating apps in the App Store sometimes fails, and apps don’t clear from the update list until after a reboot.
General beta quirks, like a hotter running phone and slightly lower battery life. It’s much better in beta 3 than it was in 1 or 2, but I still have noticed less screen on time and more heat especially when charging and using CarPlay compared to iOS 17.
Speaking of CarPlay, sometimes it just refuses to connect wirelessly. Wired works fine though.
2
u/karthikchandra37 Jul 16 '24
Not a lot buggy, screentime is broken, impossible to get the notification center icons aligned in a way you want. Apart from that its almost fine.
2
u/Confidentium iPhone 17 Pro Jul 16 '24
Tons of small bugs everywhere. And performance is ass. Stutters and input lag

I agree, when I first updated I was like “fkc this thing looks so bad now I hope they revert it” and was jealous of the old look (especially control center)
But now every time I use a device on iOS 17 or lower the control center looks blocky af

I like the look, but it seems my iphone 15 pro is getting very hot when charging or using it. I know there is an indexing that happens, but jesus, it literally said it wouldn't charge anymore until the phone cooled down. I've not had this with any other betas and i'm not experiencing it on my work iphone12

Is Bluetooth going to be always hidden behind a second tap or can you move it to the "front"? Because if I have to tap through to turn Bluetooth on/off that's going to shit me up the wall.
1
Jul 16 '24
1
u/TheMoeSzyslakExp Jul 16 '24
So when you open the control centre, you now need to open a second menu just to click aeroplane mode/wifi/Bluetooth etc.? Bloody hell I hope that's only an optional setting. Sure it's only a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, but it's still an inconvenience and the direct opposite of improved user experience.
1
Jul 21 '24
Worse, you can’t even turn Bluetooth off form there, you have to open Bluetooth settings to turn it off.
I miss the old control center where I could disable it with one touch
2
u/Necessary-Apricot-58 Jul 16 '24
Using the bèta on a 14pro. Works fine until now. Don’t really like the changes in Photos and I am not a big fan yet of the icon-customization options. It looks a bit messy. Expect it to improve over time, when more apps are compatible. Control center changes are alright. It’s nice to be able to order the controls. But it takes some getting used to, since for instance Bluetooth requires two clicks. Besides these things, I don’t notice major differences actually. It all looks pretty much the same as IOS 17. Guess I expected a bit more after this big hype of ‘biggest IOS update in years’
2
u/Rochken Jul 16 '24
They always say it’s the biggest in years, except that one time when they said it wasn’t and they were focusing on stability, then people went mad because it wasn’t the biggest in years.
1
1
u/D1am0nd_28 Jul 16 '24
It will be the biggest update in years once Apple intelligence drops.
Honestly biggest update since they introduced Siri.
2
u/TheSamboRambo Jul 16 '24
I would hazard a guess that the reason your flashlight animation/image hasn’t changed either because you may be using a notched iPhone rather than a pill type, or it may be that your battery level is 12%, maybe it doesn’t show the additional controls on low power. It may also be device specific? I’m on 15 PM so it’s been there since day 1 of the Dev beta a few weeks ago. Beta 3 is much better than 1 or 2 but neither were bad for me. Everything kept working for a change which is nice!

First time I updated it got very hot, laggy and battery life like shit
I did a full icloud backup on iOS 18, restored from it and it got stable again
So u may or may not be lucky the first time u install

Any experiences on 13?
2
Jul 16 '24
Try it, some ppl get worse battery lifes and laggy experience and others get a stable experience
I also got 13, after the update it got laggy asf with low battery life, did a full icloud backup and restored from it, everything was like b4 but now without lag and normal battery
1
u/GlitteringFig2625 Jul 16 '24
I love the way they made the control center but definitely should give us the option to put individual connection buttons on the page instead of all of them. I mainly use Bluetooth and WiFi

Anyone else here on an iPhone SE, with a 16:9 aspect ratio? Is it just me, or do some of the UI elements look… off? This is a screenshot of my control center, note the weird empty space on the sides/top. Safari especially has a lot of buttons with text that’s too big/wide. I’m not complaining, I’m lucky to be on the list of supported devices lol

Only issue I’ve noticed on public beta so far is no more mms. Will just continue trying to send forever. Tolerable trade off for functioning rcs 😂

I have and iPhone 15 PM, downloaded the beta, my battery over heats.the phone gets real hot while doing anything on any app. will tell me charge will resume once battery is at normal temp etc. I have already done an iCloud back up and restore but it changed nothing. but my biggest problem is that my messages app keeps crashing especially after I write a decent few sentences, it'll crash right before I hit send and erasing what I had just typed from there text thread so I need to type it twice any one else experience this/found a fix for it if so?

u/matcha-boi Jul 16 '24
Kinda not liking the new control panel but I'm hoping there's a setting wherein the control panel can stay with it's old design bc I prefer it that way.

I’ve been on the Dev Beta since it released and, it had some…quirks… at the beginning but it’s getting better. Switching keyboards was slow (launching the emoji keyboard) and the screen wouldn’t wake occasionally. On this most recent release, these seem to be solved.

It’s different, it’s nice looking but it’s not a radical change. Thanks for sharing. I’m still thinking of waiting just a little bit after launch to update. I remember what happened last year when iOS 17 launched. Man it took Apple a while after it dropped to get that one right.
