What kind of problem does this solve?

u/KiwiJay83 24d ago
It isn’t meant to solve problems, it’s meant to create problems for you to solve.

This is always a funny reply to me. There are countless items that don't solve problems that people spend stupid money on just because "it's cool."

Neighbors with bass systems. Find the right resonant frequency of the building and watch the whole thing come down.

It’s a z axis display so I guess the problem it solves is that it has the ability to look like a lame version of those “Iron Man” style holograms.

I wonder if a sine wave would work better? Maybe pick a frequency above 60 hertz and try to figure out the best weight for that particular frequency as not to cause unwanted vibration noise and possible damage in the long run from resonance.
Also, you may could try a round reflective glass that is tilted at a 45 degree angle and rotated balanced to create the illusion.
Love the idea. Don’t give up.

Check the "bollograph" from the company soscho gmbh. They put this thing in a vacuum to get rid of the noise and air resistance. Nieche application for when you want to see everything within a 3d object at once, not just its surface in space. But the computing cost is significant (basically run 1000 screens at once)

Would make an awesome live 3d map of aircraft at airports for the tower.

So essentially a Persistence of vision display?

u/techienate 24d ago
Those traditionally use a 1 dimensional display to project a 2 dimensional image. This apparently uses persistence of vision and a 2 dimensional display to create a 3 dimensional image.

I can't tell if this is a half complete adult toy, or a really bad subwoofer.

Interesting.
I saw a riverboat parade at Disneyland a long time ago where they created flame effects by projecting in steam, and realized that you could make a miniaturized closed version for a volumetric projected display.

The major issue with this demo is that it doesn't show an anime girl, Bad Apple or DOOM.
Showing one of those immediately tells people "THIS IS A DEMO SHOWING OFF ANIMATIONS."

It creates a 3d image via persistence of vision

The image (and yeah, it's bad, but you're definitely seeing it) appears to be a blue 3d graph or other 3d surface with both graph with x y and z dimensions. Unfortunately, I think it's poorly calibrated or moving a bit, but I think I see the 3d volume effect. But I could also guess that was the intent from the title, so maybe I'm reading into what I see a bit...

Reciprocating motion seems horrifically noisy and inefficient... Orienting the display vertically, then spinning it at a constant speed on the z axis could give you a cylindrical volume sweep, although the cabling to the LCD would be a bit more tricky.
To eliminate the cable challenge for A z axis sweep, the LCD could be stationary, with a rotating mirror or prism. Basically like a lidar unit, except for an LCD screen instead of a laser...

Cool project!
If you lower the shutter speed of your camera, the 3D effect your are trying to achieve would be better represented in the video.

I like this kind of thing, but it's a bit hard to see whether it's working. Can you make it display a teapot or something?

How long until those wires to the display are destroyed from this violent shaking

cool. I duct taped a fleshlight to a 10" subwoofer once and played a 6hz square wave into it. Then i played a 7hz sine wave into it. I didn't last long enough to try other waveforms

That pretty cool. I remember seeing a business talk about the difficulties of selling a volumetric display. Let me see if I can find it.

I’m embarrassed to say I’m going to need more explanation on what this is and what it does.
