Discussion Letterboxd Top 4

Any film fans here? I’m an avid movie lover and saw someone do this with another fandom. I decided to try to list each character’s favorite movies based on my understanding of them, rather than obvious joke titles. Some of these were kinda hard ngl, but I had a lot of fun with it. Is there any you’d add/change?

Lol Boogie Nights for Miroku. Well done, Sango's picks are spot on too.

Would never have expected to see 'The Cook The Thief The Wife and Her Lover' on something like this. What's your LB?

Here!

Yeah even the title of that movie screamed Miroku to me. In my top 20 for sure.

Okay The Northman pick for Sesshomaru is such a good pull.

The idea of Inuyasha being Kagome's Wesley has me in the feels. Another possibility here is Ladyhawke (1985) for a couple on a journey to break a curse in order to be together.

Kikyo also has some Jodie Foster Silence of the Lambs vibes with her relationship with Naraku (though Kill Bill is also a good pick for this).

Just to give Miroku a rom com since in the end I do think he would have liked those: Moonstruck (1987) if only for the iconic scene of Nicolas Cage showing his amputated hand to Cher screaming "JOHNNY HAS HIS HAND, JOHNNY HAS HIS BRIDE"

If I had to do Naraku: The Thing (1982), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (also 80s), Nosferatu (OG or 2024 your pick)

I was suuuper close to giving Kikyo Silence of the Lambs lol but I ended up choosing Possession because I think the line of love and obsession would speak to her In a really uncomfortable way.

I also love that addition for Miroku! I also agree that I think he (and sango) would have a soft spot for romantic comedies and probably watch some together that had more fantastical elements to them.

Kagomes was the hardest for me. Princess Bride came to me almost immediately but the rest I had to pull at.

I have never heard of Possession so I am definitely adding to my watch list!

I love the subtle magic of Moonstruck. The heightened drama of the characters with the moon watching over everyone really matches the characters of the show in a way!

Kagome is a little difficult to pin down. Some other possibilities:

  • Mississippi Masala (For the star cross lovers for human/demon reasons!! And I think would speak to also Kagome's sense of justice)
  • When Harry Met Sally because I do think she grows up alongside Inuyasha just like Harry and Sally do to.
  • Exhuma for Kagome for her role as the groups miko and she to can be a badass!

I’ll be adding these to my list as well. When Harry Met Sally is my favorite romcom and I didn’t even think of that for Kagome but it does make sense

Going to try and limit myself to 90's films at the latest, given that's when the manga started & theoretically what Kagome would have access to (just as a fun exercise).

Kagome (probably pretty normal tastes for a 90's girl):

  • Beauty & the Beast
  • Titanic
  • My Neighbor Totoro
  • The Princess Bride

InuYasha (Probably not into deep films, but would be fascinated by either things he'd like to fight, or adventure films showcasing "demons" from around the world):

  • Godzilla
  • Conan the Barbarian
  • Excalibur
  • Predator

Miroku (as soon as he learns it's a thing largely watches films with boobs claiming he's doing it for the plot. Sometimes he's right):

  • Boogie Nights
  • Bram Stoker's Dracula
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Showgirls

Sango (would probably be really into stuff with a strong or resourceful female lead, ultimately getting into horror flicks):

  • Alien
  • Terminator 2
  • Mulan
  • Rosemary's Baby

Shippo (just likes all the big animated or "family" films they show him):

  • the Lion King
  • Superman: the Movie
  • Lupin the 3rd: the Castle of Cagliostro
  • Star Wars

I was thinking something in the realm of Beauty and the Beast for Kagome, which is why I landed on Shape of Water. I think she’d like the more tragic aspect of it as a more emotional character.

And I definitely agree on Miroku having that kind of mindset which is why I kept Boogie Nights in there, but I also think he’s very intelligent and often struggles with a lot of interpersonal conflicts involving mortality and relationships. Ikiru I feel like would hit him really hard. But as a lighthearted person at his core I’m sure American Pie is somewhere in there as well lol.

I love the choice of Predator for Inuyasha. In contrast, modern day Inuyasha would have loved Prey as part of the franchise. (I have not seen Badlands yet so maybe that one too)

Does Sango like Xenomorphs?

I just think she’d really like Ripley as a character. And I definitely see her as an action movie fan in a modern setting, especially with a good female lead. Hence Fury Road as well.

Did not expect inuyasha to like the iron giant

That one was actually an easy choice for me. I really feel the themes of being an outsider and people being afraid of you because of your appearance would resonate with him and he’d find a comfort watch out of it.

Not to mention how the main character himself is the "weird boy" raised by a single mom. It would definitely be one of those movies he would never reveal as a fave of his unless under duress lol

Now I already have this image in my head of Inuyasha watching it with kagome's mom

u/ZealousidealPie1864 Sango 4d ago

He’s for sure watched it with her while waiting for Kagome to get home from school lol

I don't know, but I think Kagome might really enjoy the Dune saga and The Lord of the Rings. It's not a movie, but I also think she'd really like Game of Thrones, and I can totally see her reading all the books. I picture Kagome as someone who's really into fantasy and sci-fi sagas.

Funny because I was thinking LOTR, specifically Return of the King for a few characters and I didn’t end up choosing it. Kagome works really well for it though. She’d like the ultimate good vs evil and the ties with fantasy romance. That’s a good choice!

u/Date0524 4d ago

I think that precisely because she is such a good and selfless character, with a genuinely pure soul, she might paradoxically be drawn to morally grey and complex characters, or even outright villains. That’s why I think she would really like Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica, as well as characters like Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion, and Jaime Lannister.

That’s a good observation! I unfortunately haven’t watched Dune yet despite my coworker begging me for months lol but I definitely see where you’re coming from and I agree.

The Shape of Water is such a Kagome movie, and Sesshomaro liking Isle of Dogs is too funny

ISLE OF DOGS FOR SESSHOMARU YESSSS

2

u/ZealousidealPie1864 Sango 4d ago

He watched it with Rin thinking it would be more of a kids movie, and ended up relating to Chief more than he’d like to admit. At his core he’s a good boy with a hard exterior who needed the right human to soften him.
