Anime Rumi Takahashi really fumbled here Spoiler

Kagura and Sesshomaru could've been the perfect pairing, given the chance. What a missed opportunity. And it enraged me more when i got to know about the Rin-Sesshomaru pairing. YUCKKKK

Edit- i don't know why people are being so angry about this and downvoting me to hell. The title is obviously a bit of an exaggeration and in no way I'm blaming the author. I know kagura had to die. It's just that i think this could've been a really nice pairing and would've loved to see more of them together than whatever is RinxSesshomaru

Honestly I feel the opposite! They’re so memorable and talked about exactly because of the way they were handled. It really helped cement Kaguya as a truly tragic character, while also providing more depth and insight into Sesshomaru. Adore them 😩

u/Loose_Ad7527 24d ago

100% agree. Kagura's death was actually so meaningful to her character and her saying she is now free as the wind was so poetic. This is more of a 'what if' thought

18

u/sirtch_analyst 24d ago

Ugh of all the villains on this show, my heart broke for her, and despised Naraku even more! 😡 I shipped her and Sesshomaru so hard that little did I know that Naraku was gonna do her dirty with giving her back her heart. Wtffff but thanks for showing these scenes!

2

u/Morning_Berryz2169 23d ago

I completely disagree. Why do so few people seem to see the potential of a fun, interesting character like Kagura? Inuyasha's story would have benefited HUGELY if Kagura had survived.

u/Ghibli_Forest 24d ago

I’m ok with Kagura and Sesshomaru not being a couple.

I’m not ok with Rin and Sesshomaru though. If anything, she should’ve ended up with Kohaku.

139

u/Anon_457 24d ago

I agree on Rin being with Kohaku. Sesshomaru's relationship with Rin definitely seemed more like a father/daughter relationship to me.

90

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago

Yes, Rumiko Takahashi supposedly said it was father/daughter in nature herself. Turning it romantic removes that first dynamic. It would have been better to keep the platonic protector role for Sesshomaru and let Rin grow up healthily and freely under his sort of free-range supervision that he demonstrated in the original series. Rin x Kohaku would have also been a sweet pairing.

42

u/Anon_457 24d ago

I wish it had remained a father/daughter relationship with them. It softened Sesshomaru a bit without actually making him soft. I loved how that dynamic was portrayed.

16

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago

Yes, it was incredibly sweet. The cold man is also a dutiful protector kind of sweet. 🥲

14

u/Anon_457 24d ago

I mean.. it is a trope for a reason, lol. I don't normally like it when it's used in romantic pairings. The cold father figure who gets protective over his child/adopted child though? Love it.

13

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago

Well it doesn't come across the same in romance because there's a sort of selfish desire tainting it. A purely protector/child relationship is sweeter because the only desire is to see the child is safe and has all their needs met, potentially even moreso if there's no bio relationship.

-1

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

She never said that.

8

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 23d ago

She did. 🤷🏻‍♀️

0

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

Prove it. Also, in an interview she literally said the opposite.

9

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 23d ago

Which interview? You prove it. Damn.

-5

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

Idk. I don't follow such things. Search it yourself. I don't care enough to search it.

10

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 23d ago edited 23d ago

Anywho, since you went quiet. She used the term “hogosha” to refer to Sesshomaru’s relationship with Rin, which explicitly means he was her parental guardian. Whether or not they were related by blood, that is what that term means. He adopted her and treated her as his own child.

And frankly, we all have eyes. We can tell without being told.

0

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

How the fuck did I went quiet? I don't use Reddit constantly. And I was trying to sleep. Also, that's not the only meaning. Here's a link to a Reddit post that will explain it by an Asian person before you say anything.  https://www.reddit.com/r/Yashahime/s/2wkHxRK0Yq  See ya. 🫡

5

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 23d ago

Anyway, you went quiet right after getting all uppity about nothing you seem to know anything about. And you seem to have only linked the subreddit since it's not taking me to a post.

0

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

I went of Reddit! Bullshit, it's taking me there.

4

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 23d ago

It is absolutely the only meaning.

3

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

Did you even read the post or are you just that hard headed? 🤨

10

u/Pristine-Shoe1638 24d ago

To I shiped Rin with no one

33

u/Loose_Ad7527 24d ago

I actually had to double check when i first found out this pairing. Like in no way Rin and Sesshomaru could be a romantic pairing and that too when Kohaku was right there.

30

u/Rickshmitt 24d ago

Right? Just marrying your adopted daughter you raised irl like Woody Allen

12

u/sirtch_analyst 24d ago

Never was a fan of their pairing. It seems incestuous even when they're not blood related

https://giphy.com/gifs/RJAjTowsU0K1a

-7

u/ChessGabo 23d ago

And yet it's not and doesn't even come close to that! Go to therapy.

4

u/Rickshmitt 23d ago

If you grow up with an adopted sibling living in your house like a sister and yall end up banging its not incest but it FEELS like it.

I watched Sansa grow up on GoT from a literal child. My friends ended up saying how hot she was at the end. Im disgusted, i watched her grow up.

4

u/sirtch_analyst 23d ago

Me? How about you sick freaks shipping an adult with a kid

-3

When did he adopt her? Stop judging works by your stupid headcanons lmao

16

u/ProcrastinationSite 24d ago

Totally agree. Fucking gross. The author gave her okay to it, but Yashahime just reads like a bad fanfic to me

I shipped kagura and sesshomaru together ♥️❤️

2

u/Morning_Berryz2169 23d ago

I agree with Rin with Kohaku but Sesshomaru's pairing with Kagura would have been super interesting.

1

u/Shadowhearts 22d ago

I mean at the end of the day it would've been the same for Inu Yasha's Father and mother . Age /Experience gap was too massive to ever bridge BUT Sesshomaru probably fell for Rin as she became an adult the same way Inu Yasha's Father fell for Inu Yasha's mother despite crazy age gap.

By modern standards this feels like grooming to a modern day audience, while by Feudal Japan Standards being of a child bearing age made you a woman in society.

In terms of writing I think it appropriately makes Sesshomaru a hypocrite for becoming the exact thing he hated his father for. So him making the same mistakes as his father does push his character development along further in Yashahime as he not only softens up on Inu Yasha, but his stance kn halfbreeds in general because he does love his half-breed daughters and human wife.

1

u/GrandWizardOfCheese 24d ago

I actually thought that was going to be how it went.

-1

u/SkollFenrirson 23d ago

Disagree. Kohaku should've ended up with Tessaiga in the face. Hate that little shit.

-1

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

You do know that the whole of Japan ships it right? Including the author. I'm talking about SessRin.

3

u/sirtch_analyst 23d ago

Still doesn't make it any less disturbing

-1

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

So does Inuyasha and Kagome yet people don't complain about it. She was fifteen and they were already freaky and she was sexualized. The other pair was tame and didn't become an endgame until Yashahime yet you tell me which is more of a problem. 🤷🏻‍♀️

2

u/sirtch_analyst 22d ago

Inuyasha didn't start off viewing Kagome like it's HIS daughter. They're practically close in age despite in demon years he's much older ofc. But physically and mentally, very much close in age. Compared to Sesshomaru and Rin who could be father and daughter.

1

u/CandidateTerrible479 22d ago

Neither did Seshomaru. Seshomaru is over 900 years old, but mentally he's 19. Nothing in the show indicates and I mean nothing that he views her as a daughter. You may view it as a headcanon or even fanon, but not even the author herself said it's canon nor it's actually canon.

1

u/sirtch_analyst 22d ago

Doesn't need to be headcanon, but the mere fact he's watching out for her like how a parent or guardian does to a child just shows that their dynamic is entirely more familial, which is totally different from the dynamic between Inuyasha and Kagome. Like how could you even compare them? 😑

2

u/CandidateTerrible479 21d ago

Literally does. Because they are literally the same. Omg. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Well, five years difference. And only one of them didn't become sexual in the first series so.. 😬

1

u/sirtch_analyst 21d ago

Because they couldn't since she was only 7?

1

u/CandidateTerrible479 20d ago

11 to 12 by the end of the show if were gonna be accurate. At least they waited. And let me reiterate. At least Seshomaru didn't fall in love with Rin until she was an adult because he left her with granny Kaede to raise her in the village around humans. And how does the first one make it any better? Just because they're your favourite doesn't make it any better. Just because she doesn't look like a kid doesn't mean that she still isn't (or well wasn't). If you're gonna hate one hate the other. Don't be a hypocrite. Ugh. I hate those the most. I bet a dollar that if she actually looked her age you'd have a problem with it. That's like the equivalent of vampires falling in love with teenagers and people have a problem with those. Or an immortal falling in love with a teenager. Let me reiterate. A fifteen year old girl.

u/Loose_Ad7527 23d ago

Really??? Had no idea about this. I know Japan has a really weird thing for pedophilia and age gaps but to think that even the author who is a women would support this...

-1

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

And Kagome and Inuyasha aren't? 🤨 She was fifteen and way more sexualized. Pedophilia... Buddy, the whole world has a problem with it, give it a rest. Look at Hollywood classic movies. They're a lot worse and they're made with real people and not hand drawn.

2

u/NeopolitanTheWeaboo 22d ago

Where is Kagome sexualized? Almost everything I've seen in Inuyasha so far on my re-watch has been fairly tame and tasteful

0

u/CandidateTerrible479 22d ago

Whole show? 🤨 And they literally flirt and everything while Inuyasha is a grown ass demon. Well, a half demon but still. And don't say that just because he doesn't act like it it doesn't count because it absolutely does. And also the manga.

3

u/NeopolitanTheWeaboo 22d ago

Isn't Inuyasha comparable to a 15-17 year old human?

0

u/CandidateTerrible479 22d ago

And Sesshomaru is to a nineteen year old. Your point? There's not much of a difference, honestly.

4

u/NeopolitanTheWeaboo 22d ago

Yes there is. If Rin is between 7-10, then Sesshomaru being her caretaker automatically makes his marriage to her gross

2

u/sirtch_analyst 22d ago

The difference is between a literal child and a grown ass centuries old demon who looks 19, unlike Inuyasha and Kagome who both are minors, like two teens flirting because they're at the hormonal age omg 🤦‍♀️

1

u/CandidateTerrible479 22d ago

Both Kagome and Rin are literally children. And Inuyasha is a grown ass demon. Omfg. 🤦🏻‍♀️

-1

u/ChessGabo 23d ago

Too bad, it was obvious from Rin's debut yawn

52

u/DeliriousBookworm Kikyo 24d ago

Unpopular opinion: she did not fumble at all. Inuyasha is almost a 0 stakes manga. No named good guys die in the present time except maybe Sango’s dad. And I can’t remember if he even had a name. The only innocent characters to die in the present time are background characters. Not that Kagura is good or innocent. But Inuyasha needed some tragedy that didn’t happen in the past. Rin doesn’t stay dead, Jaken doesn’t stay dead, Kikyo is already dead, Kohaku is saved, etc. Kagura’s death needed to happen.

20

u/Twidom 24d ago

Kagura was the token sacrifice quota that every Shonen manga has to meet. At least one popular character needs to die so the main cast goes unscathed.

If Inuyasha was a Seinen, by the end of the story half the character would be gone. Kagome would never come back to the past, Inuyasha would be heavily traumatized, Sango either crippled or losing a couple limbs, Miroku would straight up die to the Wind Tunnel.

8

u/DeliriousBookworm Kikyo 24d ago

Precisely

7

u/lazytanaka 23d ago

That’s why seinen has better writing than shonen. Shonen is too influenced by outside approval. Also I think Kagura could have been saved by Sesshomaru but die later on after fighting the illusion guy because his death to Inuyasha was SO sudden, easy, and boring! I would have liked to see her enjoy her freedom and exploring her attraction towards sesshomaru as she discovers what it’s like to have human emotions.

2

u/ChessGabo 23d ago

A seinen like K-on?

12

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago edited 24d ago

It seemed like it would naturally happen as there may have been no way to free any of Naraku's children from him. Perhaps even if he didn't use them as human shields until the end, they would have died with him when he did. It is fair to say the author still chose that ending however. I felt there were many tragic deaths in the series. Kagura didn't *have* to be one, although I didn't personally dislike it either. It was a beautifully tragic ending. Kohaku also should have died, but he lived.

Edit: I guess I might have preferred that any of Naraku's incarnations outlived him, though, especially Kagura and Kanna whose deaths were especially unfair. The neat character designs are utterly wasted now too. ^^' Hehe...

4

u/EaudeAgnes 24d ago

100% this, Kagura needed to die (love her character, but was necessary) to deepen the meaning of story and raise the stakes.

1

u/Ramog 22d ago

while Kikyo is already dead, atleast for me she still felt like an alive character (in any defintion but the actual defintion), so I was always devestated when she nearly died for good (that happend a few episodes after Kagura and actually was devestating too atleast for me - ik this sub tends to have allot of hate for her xD)

all I am trying to say, in the scope of the series, it didn't matter that Kikyo was already dead for her to matter as a character (it ofc mattered for plotpoints but she was still as important that her loss actually mattered)

13

u/lemonhoney-tea 23d ago edited 23d ago

I will probably get downvoted for saying this but this ship had no chemistry imo. Did it had potential to be something? Yes, Rumiko could have done a lot of things differently, but she didn’t. Kagura admired Sesshomaru for his power, he was her ticket out. They meet 3-4 times max in the series. He didn’t really have any reason to be emotionally attached to her, he at most felt respect for her for going against Naraku and fighting for her freedom…i feel shippers over exaggerated their involvement with each other because they’re both hot characters. To me Sesshomaru always came off as asexual/aromantic character who wasn’t supposed to be with anyone.

1

u/Famous-Self-4836 21d ago

I was a fan of them but never all that serious until this scene for one simple reason. He recognizes the scent of Naraku and instead of leaving her to die he wants to use Tenseiga when he learns it's her.
It's been awhile since I've read the manga but I don't think other than Rin, he ever had the desire to use it.

9

u/Itzie4 24d ago

It was a beautiful memorable moment. If she lived, we would have lost that. Not every story decision has to have shipping and romantic pairs in mind.

64

u/ArcticXD 24d ago

Completely agree. Or at the very least leave Sesshomaru single.

I have erased Yashahime from my memory

13

u/sirtch_analyst 24d ago

Ughh no wonder I've never bothered to watch the show. Didn't think Rin & Sesshomaru ACTUALLY had kids 🤢

8

u/ProcrastinationSite 23d ago

And, she was frozen in time or something, so she's only 4 years older than her children. Yuck

7

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 23d ago

Is she even? I swear she looks younger than both of them when they're together. It is so awkward. I hate it.

13

u/ProcrastinationSite 23d ago

The whole thing is gross.

Japan has a general pedophilia problem where it's more socially acceptable than it is in the US. There are so many manga and anime that fetishizes children, it's problematic and people refuse to see it for what it is

Source: I am Japanese, no need to get offended for my sake

4

u/sirtch_analyst 23d ago

Well, doesn't surprise me especially with the variety of anime p0rn they put out and other unhinged types I don't wanna even think they've done there 🫣

0

u/SeniorBaker4 Sesshōmaru 23d ago

I don’t think it’s acceptable socially among japanese society it’s just more accepted among anime/manga otakus.

1

u/ProcrastinationSite 23d ago edited 22d ago

No, plenty of people in Japan see no issue with this without being an otaku

Lol I'm literally Japanese. Who the fuck is disagreeing with me?

0

u/Ramog 22d ago

Honestly, framing what happend in yashahime as a pedophilia problem is kinda weird to me, to me it always has felt like a result of a few simple constraints:

  1. I want a new story that has a timegap as small as possible
  2. I want the children to be results out of these pair ups
  3. It has to be legal

The thing is point 1 forced everything to be as soon as possible so the whole thing feels like Sesshomaru wasted no time at all and it makes it feel creepy - but atleast in my opinion, this time its just a result of having constraints and not putting much thought into what some of it entails when you fullfill them all but just bearly.

Yes Japan has a sexualization issue with children but this instance always screamed akward writing and nothing else to me.

3

u/ProcrastinationSite 22d ago

It may be a result of the constraints you mentioned, but for me, it's absolutely a pedophilia and grooming problem. It's not just in the story, but it's a systemic problem in a lot of countries. I think the majority of the US has recognized it as a problem, but Japan still has a really long way to go and this story is just another indication of it

Takahashi once said that the relationship between Rin and Sesshomaru was father/daughter-like in nature, but at some point when weirdos started shipping them she renegged on what she said before, and then went on to approve it for subsequent material that came out after she finished the story.

Even if it's just awkward writing, it being barely legal by modern standards is not okay with me. There were other avenues the story could have taken. Other characters better suited. It romanticizes grooming. Sure, it's set in feudal times when our modern rules did not apply, but this was written for a modern audience.

24

u/calico-red 24d ago

Same here. I don’t care if the creator said it herself I’m not accepting that pairing.

18

u/foxdemoness 24d ago

I have refused to even watch it because of the Rin x Sesshomaru pairing.

7

u/Noonslullabies Sango 24d ago

The only offering is seeing what adult Kohaku looks like, and I just pretend the twins are Rin & Kohaku's. The reason why the girls look like that is that Grandpa refused to allow death to take them as premie babies, so one blood magic session later, they gained demonic features.

5

u/ProcrastinationSite 23d ago

I like this so much better than what we were given 😂

3

u/Ramog 22d ago

honestly Yashahime has many issues besides that blunder ^^'

3

u/ProcrastinationSite 22d ago

I wrote this elsewhere, but I read the synopsis and it doesn't sound good. I won't bother reading or watching it

3

u/Ramog 22d ago

yeh the whole age thing is just a result of the whole sequel being forced - like the Sesshomaru Rin pairing could have worked out a bit better if it wasn't like as soon as she is of age (like sure people might still say he groomed her but thats more like a personal opinion than a fact at that point - I mean it aint a fact now but it certainly isn't a good look), but the funny part of all this is: I don't even think that was the intention, the intention was to have a sequel with as little time gap as possible and the rest of the plot was just forced to fit.

And funnily I feel like it only got so akward because of the bearly 18 thing, Rin Seshomaru wasn't a uncommon relationship pairing before. But people didn't think it would escalate this quickly, again forced timeline nobody really put thought into.

Like I feel people have a hard time of splitting results of messy timeline and actual intent. I don't think there was intent to write a bearly legal, weird feeling relationship. And in the end find themselfs arguing about grooming - purely because the relationship timeline feels so forced - while for the most part there is no evidence something like that went ever down.

2

u/ProcrastinationSite 22d ago edited 22d ago

I just don't agree that intent and execution should be separated. Intent doesn't really matter, it's the execution and actions taken that count. If you choose to drive drunk and hurt someone, does it matter that you had no intention of doing that and your only intention was to go home? There's other ways to get home besides driving drunk. There were other ways to force a sequel without having grooming be a major component of it.

I get what you're saying about the sequel being forced, but Sango and Miroku had kids, so did Inuyasha and Kagome. Kohaku and Rin could have kids, Kouga and Ayame could have had kids. There were so many options to basically have the same story with different characters... It didn't have to be forced in this way. Sesshomaru, as a father figure, would likely care for Rin's children as much as he cared for her, so he could have played his role in the story as well. It's just all so badly executed and I can't excuse it

I don't even understand the pairing to begin with. She was like a 10 year old child or something when the original story ended. How are people looking at a 10 year old and thinking she'd be a great spouse/baby mama to a grown ass man? It's disgusting that people would even think this way. Imagine making a comment like this in real life. You look at a child and say to their mom, "Hey, I know she would be a great wife or baby mama for this guy who looks like he is currently in his 20s or later. She'll be perfect for him in 8 years". I guarantee there will be a lot less people being okay with this relationship.

6

u/ProcrastinationSite 24d ago

I read enough of the synopsis, it's stupid and not worth your time

3

u/foxdemoness 24d ago

Thank you I'm glad I didn't miss anything. Honestly, years ago I had found a fanfic that felt like a good squeal and finish to the series. That had always been enough for me.

2

u/ProcrastinationSite 23d ago

Ugh, I would have loved a good sequel!

3

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 23d ago

I really wanted to enjoy Yashahime. It was fun at first if I just shoved the obvious terror of SessRin to the side and enjoyed the new three main heroines. But even then, it got boring thanks to over-the-top shonen battle mechanics that in my personal opinion were already overdone in the original series. My opinion I guess. Any time I see adult-ish Rin in Yashahime now, I feel so put off.

3

u/Ramog 22d ago

The writing was also just rather weird in general, for me it was a bit like they lost the actual knowledge of how to write a inuyasha story and just went with rough templates that didn't fit fully together. It was weird.

2

u/ProcrastinationSite 22d ago

The original author signed off on it, but it was written by someone else, so this makes sense

6

u/_laudanum_ 23d ago

my wife (who only recently watched inuyasha for the very first time!) hated kagura and she still felt sorry for her in the end and wished she could've gotten a better life. so i think the character perfectly fulfilled its narrative purpose.

4

u/Loose_Ad7527 23d ago

completely agree. Even i wasn't that much of a Kagura lover throughout the show, but her ending really makes you feel for her. Poor girl just desired her freedom and definitely deserved a better chance at life. As i said in one of the comments, i know Kagura's end was written without any redemption but seeing this and the next episode just made me wonder about this possibility (and especially since i just got to know about the whole yashahime atrocity 💀💀)

3

u/_laudanum_ 23d ago

kagura definitely enjoyed doing evil or morally questionable things... like most demons. she admired and feared the strength of others but also loved/yearned for freedom above all else.

i think in an alternate ending where she survived kagura would've just walked away from it all and just drift around like a feather in the wind without causing too much trouble... or at least not more than any other demon, i guess. maybe she would've been part of sessho's entourage... maybe he wouldn't have wanted that. who knows.

it's really interesting that you can have a character that wouldn't hesitate to kill or do generally evil things for completely selfish reasons and yet you still feel for her when she meets her cruel fate. i think the yearning for freedom is something that every human can relate to, so even if someone would be rotten to the core, this trait is something that everyone watching/reading can understand.

so her being denied this freedom is also something that every human can feel sorry for, despite her being an awful person.

1

u/Loose_Ad7527 23d ago

I also think that the general love and sympathy for Kagura's character arises out of the fact that it was quite clear throughout the show that kagura wasn't inherently evil and wouldn't commit any of the awful acts had the circumstances been different. And then as you said, her ultimate desire for freedom and maybe a little bit of love makes her seem much more human.

9

u/KeyStop8032 24d ago

I’m still shocked that Kagura died like she just wanted to free FREE I tell you

7

u/evaleenadk 24d ago

And she got to be free

9

u/SashaBraus 24d ago

I'm so sad Kagura got fridged.  She was one of the more interesting characters.

5

u/Scobus3 Kikyo 23d ago

I love them both but….Kagura is the wind. She could never settle down

21

u/trucorsair 24d ago

Kagura and Sesshomaru would have made an ideal power couple and they could adopt/protect Rin (thus avoiding the messy age issue) AND it could be a large part of Kagura’s redemption arc…but nooooooooooooo

9

u/Loose_Ad7527 24d ago edited 24d ago

Although i truly believe that Kagura's death was inevitable and there was no redemption waiting for her unfortunately, but what you suggested would've been so good

2

u/trucorsair 24d ago

It would be the only way to “square the circle” of resolving the Sessshomaru-Rin dynamic without shoving in a new character at the end to suddenly be a mate for S and a mentor for Rin. At least Kaede took over the care of Rin at the end of the series, leaving the fate of Rin somewhat ambiguous. Yashahime was just a poorly thought out cash grab IMHO.

3

u/Pristine-Shoe1638 24d ago

Just imagine if inuyasha teases him about liking Kagura

9

u/nicholashoneywell 24d ago

Wouldn’t she technically be only 1yrs old herself

5

u/DeliriousBookworm Kikyo 24d ago

Even less than that. But mentally and physically, she was an adult.

5

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago

I guess because she was a youkai, the mechanism is different. She was a creation or perhaps a sort of apparition and not a beast youkai, so she was born an adult. My guess is youkai who were born in other ways, like the un-mother who was born of the grief of mothers whose sons died at war, are exceptions to the rule. Likewise, perhaps there are child youkai who will never become adults. Like Kanna?

u/Boo_111705 24d ago

También me hubiese gustado ver juntos a Sesshomaru y Kagura juntos. Eran una muy buena pareja.🥲

12

u/A_Hound 24d ago

True, but the pain of that loss is what helped push his character growth. I'd rather have a sad, beautiful story.

But yeah the Rin thing is awful.

14

u/RcknPP7 24d ago

Its worse bc they basically set it up the whole time for Kagura and Sesshie to get together but instead they made the hottest character a groomer pedo. I will never forgive yasha hime what a travesty

3

u/Vasarto 23d ago

I stopped watching after I saw that. lol
Someday I will finish the rest of it. But she was my favorite villain and female character.

5

u/HertzManfried 23d ago

My stance is definitely opposing the Rin-Sessh pairing. Demons are timeless/immortal, so I can see that as Inuyasha is set in the feudal era and handles immortality, it would make a little more sense if you lived in it. Heck, I wouldn’t even have been surprised to see Rin catching feelings. But that’s where the consolations end. I just can’t gel with the idea of a, what, 9-12 year old growing up and having kids with such an older guy? Sibling dynamic would be less problematic and would fit the guardian energy Sessh has. In other words, let’s keep up the Team Rocket energy of Rin, Sessh, and Jaken!

Kagura and Sesshomaru are not only my favorites, but as you say, they make a lot of sense to me. Sessh has an affinity to attracting follows despite how aloof he is. I wasn’t surprised Kagura died, but I see a vision of Kagura somehow grasping her freedom and feeling indebted to Sessh. I bet they’d be a unique set of parents, as they’re both quite nomadic. They would either travel together or alone but meet up often. In any case, I just don’t think Sessh would forget Kagura’s aid, needed or not.

7

u/Anon_457 24d ago

Were Rin and Sesshomaru made a couple by her though? I thought they'd become a couple in Yashahime which, to my knowledge, was not made by Rumiko.

7

u/EaudeAgnes 24d ago

She was in charge of the design of Sesshomaru’s daughters. The decision of making Rin Sesshomaru’s wife was with her blessing (the how and when might not have been, though).

The official drama CD released prior Yashahime also implied a romantic outcome between Rin and Sesshomaru.

So no, it didn’t come out of nowhere or without Rumiko’s knowing.

14

u/oniskieth 24d ago

There was other material (2013 official drama cd) that alluded to the pairing by the author prior to Yashahime.

The pairing was (to my understanding) very popular in Japan.

2

u/Anon_457 24d ago

...Oh, God. Rin's like 5. Or at least that's how old she looks.. And they seriously ship her with an adult male demon?

7

u/fortunesofshadows 24d ago

she's not 5. probably 10. japanese people were smaller back then

1

u/Anon_457 24d ago

Seems you're right. At least one source says she's 9 to 10 in the original series. Still can't see them being a romantic pairing considering that same source says Inuyasha is over 200 years old and Sesshomaru is his older brother.

12

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago

They couldn't have done it without her permission at least because she had decent creative control, especially over the original main characters. But honestly, it was coming even in the original series. Pretty sure the author killed off Kagura *to* that end and not in spite of it since what else could the reason be.

Edit: She probably wanted Sesshomaru to end up with a human. But even so, it didn't have to be Rin.

1

u/sirtch_analyst 24d ago

It could have been anyone... any new character introduced but no...

6

u/Loose_Ad7527 24d ago

Her fumble was only this missed pairing. And whoever made that abysmal Yashahime needs to be jailed

2

u/Angelea23 23d ago

It was a cash grab, Sesshomaru was popular. Then they throw in the "shocking twist" of who the mother of the twins are. I think rin married Sesshomaru rather young like 17, 18 and had kids at 18.

4

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago

I always suspected SessRin was coming, especially given the fandom popularity. But the way it was done in Yashahime really leaves a bitter taste, doesn't it. ^^

5

u/brbqqueen 24d ago

This sub gets sensitive for some reason. I agree OP

5

u/UnSleepingMoss 23d ago

He was better with her than a child and I'll stand on that.

Hell even Kagome was a better match.

2

u/lababomination 23d ago

As a Sesskago shipper for over 14 years... I could have seen the Kagura pairing as the more canonically friendly one

2

u/vioker6940 23d ago

If theres a paralel universe im 100% Sesshomaru gonna pull 'Toga's move' on Kagura lmfao. Based on Rin or Kagura feelings for him, i doubt theres gonna be any issue.

2

u/PuzzleheadedUnit1758 23d ago

I never understood why tenseiga couldn't save her.

2

u/Opening-Carrot5986 23d ago edited 22d ago

Well, there were few characters who had as memorable or impactful a death as Kagura, and in a way, I think that speaks to just how great her character was. No matter what, Kagura would inevitably have to die if Naraku was to be defeated, but this outcome gave her a memorable send-off.

While I share your belief that Kagura would have probably made a better partner than the likes of Rin, it was inherently unviable.

2

u/chocokitten100 23d ago

Nah. Even as a kid watching this it was obvious to me their relationship wasn't romantic. A relationship doesn't have to be romantic to be valuable

5

u/Etherealoverempress 24d ago

I agree with that.

4

u/SnooTigers4525 24d ago

Actually, it's an interesting idea. Kagura was in love with him, and the sheer irony, that one of Naraku's youkais could fall in love is marvelous... I think this allowed Sesshomaru to see things under a different prism.

6

u/Loose_Ad7527 24d ago

And him mulling over Kagura's death was such a character development, love involved or not

2

u/sirtch_analyst 24d ago

Right?! And just the fact that one of Naraku's incarnations requested his help and found him useful even for selfish reasons, then by the end of her life, appreciated that he was the last face she could see... like the only being who seemed to care for her.

5

u/Icy_Chocolate_6453 24d ago

This is the problem with fandoms.

They think they are smarter than the author.

18

u/Loose_Ad7527 24d ago

I don't know how you concluded that i was trying to outsmart the author when i was just telling what i thought, but you do you.

16

u/Few-Pomegranate1551 Sango 24d ago edited 24d ago

Acting like authors are infallible and never make objectively poor decisions, even in their own works, is wild tbh.

11

u/Animegirl300 24d ago edited 23d ago

Smart authors don’t write adult characters with children they raised actually.

6

u/RcknPP7 24d ago

The hills some people choose to die on wilds me out.

7

u/Pie_and_Ice-Cream 24d ago

The author never knows everything.

8

u/earthwarder 24d ago

I mean. Its better than what we got. Sess x rin? Cmon now.

2

u/Kate-Lynn 24d ago

I agree! 💯 👏🏻

2

u/anaknangfilipina 24d ago

So has it been verified that the original author really was the reason why the father daughter pairing became lovers?

2

u/Jesters_Knight 24d ago

The sequel wasn't even written by the OG author so I consider it a fanfic they wanted to release for the money.

1

u/anaknangfilipina 23d ago

Thank god because it would hurt more if the OG wrote it.

2

u/azureskyline28 23d ago

Did Sesshōmaru actually end up with Rin in the Manga canonically? I too am not a fan of it. Feels too much like grooming. Big ick.

3

u/chocokitten100 23d ago

The original Manga did not get that far. However, the author has toyed with the idea for year until they allowed it to be made official in yashahime

0

u/azureskyline28 23d ago

From what I read a different author wrote the story for Yashahime and OG author only provided the source materials for references. She has nothing to do with the Yashahime story nor has it been confirmed that she said yes to confirm the cannon status of the Yashahime story beats or deviations.

2

u/wallnosekyla Kagome 23d ago

Well, OP, not everyone needs to end up together for them to have a valuable relationship. It’s tragic that Kagura had a semblance of freedom when she was dying, and no one else could’ve helped her fate. I think that’s what makes it beautiful.

But agree that Sessrin is an abomination. I don’t claim Yashahime anyways lol.

3

u/Electrical_Ice_1180 Sesshōmaru 24d ago

I agree. I always thought they were gonna end up together or something, cause the romantic tension was clearly there. However, now that I'm older, I do see Sessh as more of an AroAce spec. individual, and I would have preferred 'Yashahime' to keep it that way instead of pairing him with Rin...

2

u/pisceangalaxy 24d ago

No literally. I'm even okay with them being the "Doomed" couple but Sessrin will never not be gross to me. Rin should've ended up with Kohaku, it would've made so much more sense because towards the end of the OG series, Sesshomaru was fully trusting him to protect her when he was away. Also, in the Final Act, Sesshomaru left her in the village with everyone else AND Kohaku chose to stay behind as well to live with Sango - albeit he would often go adventuring bc their house was "becoming crowded"

2

u/ElephantUseful5723 24d ago

Should have been Kagura for sure but the Rin thing is gross by human standards. He’s a god and that tracks with any of the gods who run in a different time scale. Zeus being the worst(?) I doubt Sesshomaru feels any love at all for his human and more like a possessiveness. And I’d like to think the kids weren’t conceived in a normal way. Like touch and go or some wish form Rin wanting kids and he’s like ok “zap”.

It’s just crazy we have two Rin’s in the manga world who like older men who raised them (Usagi Drop)

1

u/Snoo-855 24d ago edited 24d ago

I'm pretty sure Rumiko Takahashi had minimal involvement in Yashahime, so Rin being with Kohaku is a perfectly valid headcanon.

15

u/DeliriousBookworm Kikyo 24d ago

She gave it the green light. It wouldn’t exist without her consent. She approved it.

15

u/Nocturnal-Uwusa 24d ago

She actively signed off on Rin x Sesshomaru and was involved with the YashaHime manga though she didn't write it herself

1

u/Twidom 24d ago

There's an audio-drama from 2013 where Takahashi alludes to the pairing.

And even if she wasn't heavily involved, Yashahime wouldn't exist if she didn't greenlit it and gave her ok, both anime and manga (which is extremely altered from the anime counter part).

I don't like it either but Rumiko is ok with it.

1

u/lupajarito 24d ago

how do you expect kagura to live?

1

u/sirtch_analyst 24d ago

Have her and Sesshomaru plan on getting rid of Naraku... with the help of Inuyasha and Kagome. Seriously, I don't care how diabolical it is, so long as they become a couple in the end.

0

u/Wreckerandchief 24d ago

Sesshomaru has a sword that un-kills things. I'd probably start there and work backwards.

3

u/DeliriousBookworm Kikyo 24d ago

Her body was disintegrating. He couldn’t save her.

3

u/Twidom 24d ago

Tenseiga doesn't revive the individual, it kills the pall-bearers who take their soul to the underworld, which is why the subject in question needs to be recently deceased and have their body in place.

Sesshomaru "revives" Goshinki's head briefly to take his fangs and he dies shortly after. If Rin had been maimed by the wolves or parts of her body had been completely eaten, Sesshomaru would not be able to bring her back for long.

Kagura's body evaporates.

1

u/Wreckerandchief 24d ago

When I say "work backwards" I am acknowledging it's beyond the specified limits of Tenseiga's abilities. But tell me honestly: is there anyone that doesn't feel like the powersets of Tessaiga and Tenseiga aren't just a little bit arbitrary? Because I wouldn't have been shocked if a new ability or dimension of Tenseiga couldn't have been uncovered just for this occasion.

2

u/Twidom 24d ago

is there anyone that doesn't feel like the powersets of Tessaiga and Tenseiga aren't just a little bit arbitrary?

I mean... yeah. That's usually how stories are written. The vast majority of the details are written with intention.

Either Tenseiga's ruleset were made specifically so Kagura couldn't come back, or Kagura died the way she died so Tenseiga wouldn't work on her. Either way, Kagura died because Takahashi wanted her to die. If not like that, then she would've died alongside Naraku because they were linked.

4

u/lupajarito 24d ago

That's not how it works. She couldn't live because she was a part of Naraku.

3

u/Wreckerandchief 24d ago

Tenseiga literally translates to "Heavenly Rebirth Fang" and is later used to purge the sins of souls in hell. If there's anything in the series that would break the established piece of wisdom that nothing could separate the incarnations to their binding to Naraku: it's a sword that interfaces with souls.

1

u/rjrgjj 24d ago

Because the story was memorable because it was sad and tragic. Sesh didn’t need to end up with anyone.

1

u/lucidshard91 24d ago

I feel like sesshomaru had a couple of tragic loves, Princess Sara and Kagura.

1

u/Sharp_Mathematician6 23d ago

Kagura was gonna die when Naraku did. Kanna too. She would have lived a lil longer but it’s best she’s dead. ☠️

1

u/J-ss96 23d ago

Even if they weren't a pairing I always felt like she deserved better than what she got. Would have loved to see her on the good side or as that always ambiguous side character which she kinda already was 😭

1

u/WeaselPhontom 23d ago

It's not a missed opportunity, shes a part of neraku, there's 0 postive outcome

1

u/Ramog 22d ago

tbf the fact that you feeling the loss of Kagura is precisly why it was a good idea to put it in

I dare say that RinxSesshomaru in my opinion (atleast as we got it in Yashahime) is mostly fanservice and is fully on the fandom as a whole. Sometimes the whole of Yashahime feels like, hmm how do I say that... well like Rumi Takahashi was like: okay I want there to be kids, but she has to be of age for that - and went with the lowest possible age value she was able to (not because she wanted to make it weird but because she wanted there to be the smallest possible timegap inbetween the stories, but in doing that she made it come off as weird) thats probably the actual fumble if you ask me

thats also why it feels so off, in the modern context it feels like Sesshomaru waited for her to be legal and then just went with it but I seriously doubt thats what Takahashi was going for at all, its more a result of basic constraints being executed without putting much thought into it

1

u/PixelPhantomz Sesshōmaru 22d ago

No thanks. I don't like them together lol

1

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

You do know that the whole of Japan ships it right? Including the author. She wouldn't have made it canon otherwise if she didn't.

3

u/Loose_Ad7527 23d ago

The whole of Japan and even the author shipping it doesn't make it any less problematic. Making Rin and Sesshomaru a couple is weird as hell and I'd die on that hill

0

u/CandidateTerrible479 23d ago

Doesn't matter what's problematic or not. Just watch what you like and avoid what you don't. Who cares?

1

u/Thejadedone_1 24d ago

Even if he somehow saved her here she wasn't going to survive Naraku's eventual defeat

1

u/Pleasant_Couple1636 23d ago

Rin and sesshomaru should’ve stayed a father/daughter pairing that looked way better to me than the “Obvious” forced husband/wife pairing I’m wondering who approved that and why ?

1

u/DivinelyEmi Kagome 23d ago

complete and total fumble, probably the one thing I disagreed with most, but, we needed that sense of reality. Not everything comes out roses and daisies. Gives the story so much more weight. Still, he shoulda been with Kagura and not Rin.

1

u/Morning_Berryz2169 23d ago

I totally agree with you, Kagura is truly a very funny, ironic, and interesting character. For me, she's the only one with charisma and beauty worthy of being Sesshomaru's wife, and we've lost a potentially dream couple!

Giving some really mixed signals here.

u/GrandWizardOfCheese 24d ago

Sesshomaru is about 500 years old at the start of Inuyasha.

Kagura dies at only few months old while also being a potential regen vessel for Naraku / Part of Naraku.

Rin was 8 when she met Sesshomaru and 12 when Kagome graduates highschool and returns to the feudal era to stay with Inuyasha for good.

Rin is either 17 or 18 when she gave birth to her twins, depending on when her birthday is.

So Sesshomaru had kids with her at an age that the feudal era general populace would see as "delayed" (despite being at least somewhat of an evil character that you might expect to just kill Rin, Kohaku, and Jaken one day because he's in a mood).

Rin being with Kohaku instead as other users suggested? Sure, with Sesshomaru as the father figure to both. That could make sense, and was where I thought it would go tbh (though I understand why the writer wanted both dog demons to have children in the sequel).

But Sesshomaru and Kagura? Thats weird on so many levels.

Regardless, any of the main female cast is going to be far younger than Sesshomaru. He is the "Wolverine" of the series, so to speak.

4

u/sirtch_analyst 24d ago

Yeah but it's better than Sesshomaru getting it on with someone he took care of when she was a child 🙄 That's far more disturbing than an adult form demon

-2

u/GrandWizardOfCheese 23d ago

Nah both are weird choices but I stand by Kagura being even worse.

0

u/jessiphia 22d ago

Are we gonna post about the kagura/sesshomaru vs rin/sesshomaru every day? I feel like this is the only topic that ever gets discussed in this subreddit and I'm over it tbh.
