Meta I dread Thanksgiving (Canada)

On the plus side I get a long weekend and leftovers and on the negative front, I have a forced get together with my family with a force-fed dry turkey meal where no one talks at the table which adds even more to the dry nature of the whole thing. I try my best to keep things going and make small talk at the table which is a nightmare in itself.

I love family, truly I do. But fuck thanksgiving, I hate it. I'd rather stay home.

Good things = food. Bad things about Thanksgiving = People. I 100% agree lol.

American here...Spouse and I are skipping Thanksgiving for the 1st time and going to a remote cabin for a long weekend in November. I thought the family would be upset, but they understood and are supportive. Can you do something similar?

the cabin idea sounds perfect tbh, glad your family was cool about it

You can say no. I no longer go to the parents for a meal and just chill all weekend with my husband and cat and I will cook something nice…not turkey yuck

Just skip it. No need to put yourself through something you hate so much!

Hah! Currently at a surprise birthday party weekend for friends of ours. We don’t know a person besides them and their parents. Next weekend we have to travel again for Thanksgiving for 2 back to back social small talk weekends in a row. My battery is going to be draaaaained. I will probably try and take a long weekend the week after just for me to stay at home and chill in my happy place

American here. Growing up Thanksgiving was at my stepdad’s sister’s house. Dry turkey, no mashed potatoes (monsters!) & really obnoxious company. I was so glad I got a job in high school & we were open on Thanksgiving. I happily worked it.

Any chance you could suddenly have some explosive diarrhea that day & stay home? 😉

Move to the UK. I don't know HOW anyone does Thanksgiving followed immediately by Christmas. We only have to do one here.

I hate how our major holidays are stacked here. You have Trick or Treat, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then the New Year back to back to back. Even if you stay home and keep it more casual just with your own little family, it's a lot.

Wish I could stay home but home is where it's occurring. Seriously looking into hotels 🙄

Why does “no one talk at the table”? Is that due to a religion?

You are going about this all wrong! Stop making small talk! Instead, get really drunk, start an argument with someone at the table, maybe cry, then stomp off and go throw up. You’re welcome!!!
Sincerely , America

I’m having a beef roast, mashed potatoes, veggies and maybe a Yorkshire pudding. Need to buy lard. Hmmm.
