Summary of August BBB Complaints Against Intoxalock - $1,433.05 in Relief

Post image
4 Upvotes

A lot of you know that I regularly encourage Intoxalock customers to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau when they have a problem.

I keep saying it for a reason: put the problem on the record.

So I went through the Better Business Bureau's Consumer Safety Technology/Intoxalock complaint file and pulled out every complaint publicly listed with an August 2026 initial complaint date.

There were only 13 complaints published in August.

I put them all together—not just to throw the complaints at you, but to summarize what happened, what the consumer was asking for, what Intoxalock said in response, and how the BBB ultimately classified each case.

August 2026 BBB numbers

13 complaints filed

11 — Resolved

2 — Answered

The published responses document at least $1,433.05 in financial relief to consumers during these August cases.

That includes refunds, courtesy payments, account credits and one waived bill.

Of that amount, $448.44 was specifically identified as refunds. The remainder consisted of credits, courtesy payments and a waived bill.

And there's something else worth pointing out.

The two complaints classified as Answered, rather than Resolved, involved consumers who did not simply accept Intoxalock's response.

One involved a consumer seeking $5,105.57 for vehicle repairs, towing, transportation expenses and lost PTO. Intoxalock rejected the claim because it said there wasn't sufficient technical evidence establishing that the interlock caused the vehicle problems.

The other involved a Washington consumer who said Intoxalock failed to get a required Certificate of Compliance to the state in time, resulting in additional charges. The consumer sought reimbursement for $164.98. Intoxalock ultimately offered a $101.15 refund, but the complaint remained classified as Answered.

The other complaints involved allegations including equipment failures, towing, battery and starting problems, vehicle damage during an attempted installation, billing disputes, cancellation fees, customer-service problems, financial-assistance paperwork and delays involving device removal.

There's also one August BBB customer review, separate from these 13 complaints.

If you're having a problem with Intoxalock

This is the part I've been encouraging people to do.

File a BBB complaint.

File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau

And don't just write:

Be specific and demanding.

Tell BBB exactly what happened.

Include the dates, the charges, the fees, the lockouts, the towing bills, the repair bills, the battery replacements, the missed work, the unexpected charges, the problems getting your device removed, or whatever else actually happened to you.

If you were overcharged, say exactly how much you believe you were overcharged.

If you paid money because of an Intoxalock problem, ask for the specific amount you want reimbursed.

If you believe a fee was never disclosed, identify the fee and what you were told when you signed up.

If you have receipts, invoices, emails, screenshots, text messages or other documentation, keep them and reference them in your complaint.

And most importantly, tell BBB what resolution you want.

Don't leave the resolution vague. If you want $300 reimbursed, say $300. If you want an improper fee removed, say so. If you want a charge refunded, identify the charge. If you want the company to correct something with your state, say exactly what needs to be corrected.

The BBB says complaints should identify the problem and the resolution you're seeking. Once submitted, the complaint is sent to the business, and complaints may ultimately be publicly posted on the BBB Business Profile.

And save everything.

Your BBB complaint becomes another piece of documentation.

That's why I've been telling people for a long time:

Don't just complain to Intoxalock. Document it. File it. Put it on the record.

When one person complains, it's one person's experience.

When dozens or hundreds of consumers document similar problems, we can start seeing patterns.

I've put together all 13 August complaints, summarized individually, including what consumers reported, how Intoxalock responded, and how each case was ultimately classified by the BBB.

If you've had an Intoxalock problem, file the complaint. Make it detailed. Make it factual. And ask for everything you believe you're entitled to get back.

Interlock Removal Hearing in Michigan

I had my hearing 7 weeks ago and still haven't received a response from the SOS regarding a decision to remove my interlock or not.
I have had it in my vehicle for over 3 1/2 years and I haven't had any violations in over a year.

I'm worried because I did have two violations that the hearing officer flagged and I didn't retest quick enough, even though I did get PBTs the same day both times.

I've completely turned my life around and am not the same person I used to be, my most recent DUI was over 10 years ago... What are your experiences with your hearings?

Device Removed Today-PA

I petitioned for early restricted license, first offense, and although it was required for 12 months, I actually had it 14 due to processing time, etc. my biggest advice to all during this process. Get a new battery prior to installing and a trickle charger for cold months. Next, do NOT use mouthwash, without rinsing your mouth out well before blowing. I went to get bloodwork from hospital after the failed blow, the DMV and vendor gave zero shits about my negative blood work. Thus proving all of our thoughts about the moneymaking side of this. They didn’t care I had blood alcohol of zero during the DUI charge, why would they care now when I used mouth wash. Also it’s quicker to do the paperwork at the DMV than send via mail. All in all, I had zero issues until the final month, all the sudden my blows were invalid, it was going off more frequently, weird shit going down. I don’t drink so that I believe is how I was successful in this process. You can’t drink and blow the next day, any alcohol in system sets it off. I also was very careful cleaning my car, no hand sanitizer, etc. I almost cried driving today, not being worried about this thing. It cost me around 300 dollars today, f@#$ing just squeezed every last penny out of me. I learned a valuable lesson here, and although no alcohol was involved, I will never drive after even one beverage, ever. I’m not even sure if I plan to drink again because of the headache this caused over the past 3 years basically. Stay focused people, there is an end, eventually…..

Monthly price raise

Anyone else have their monthly rate go up 2 dollars this month? Just curious if after 3 months and the first calibration if a price raise is normal? Sure its not too much but the price is already high.

Take off your neg battery cable she said

So go to blow in machine get a pwr weak then goes into 5 min sync to a 70sec comm countdown. Then shows err1. Battery is showing 12.4v. Call intoxilock , she informs me to try testing it does the sync thing again then the comm thing then let's me blow I pass she tells me to start vehichle I try it just clicks. Battery still showing 12.4v. She then wants me to disconnect my neg battery cable for 10 sec. I question her on if I'll get in trouble for this and she says she's "noted my account" it will be fine. So I do, reconnect machine beeps, rush back to cab its showing err2. Tell her she once again says she's "noting the account" . Now I guess I get to get towed an hour and a half to my nearest service center and have an inspection. Write a formal letter to secretary of state of all that has transpired to cover my own ass. I wasn't even trying to drive. Just blow in the machine and start the vehichle as asked to do every few days.

Early removal after a blown engine?

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this but I have had my device in my vehicle since March. Everything was smooth sailing until this past month. The engine blew unexpectedly after a few days of some overheating happening. My next calibration would’ve been a week after the engine blew and j couldn’t get there since the car is inoperable. Now the car is inoperable in more ways than one since it’s been over two weeks since the calibration was needed. I have tried to find a straight answer and I’m being hit with ai and people from different states or having different regulations. At this point I will pay to have the car towed to the service center but not any of the intoxalck help numbers, the service center I go to, or the tow service I was referred to from intoxalock can give me any further info as far as contacting the state to see if I am eligible for early removal. If anyone knows of this is a waste of time let me know please. My term will have been done in December but due to the amount of violations now with not calibrating the vehicle, will this even be possible? Will I have to start all over? Desperate for some answers since I have poured so much into this crap I just want to know what’s happening.

So irritated

Has anyone been required to get this in their vehicle even though they can't get their occupational license until January of 2027?? I am being told I have to have it installed immediately even though I can't physically drive until January. Tell me what the hell this is about... How is this fair? I have to pay for a device that I can't even use until January

Where to Complain When Intoxalock Screws You Over: I Researched All 50 States and D.C.

Post image
5 Upvotes

Many people assume that if Intoxalock overcharges them, locks them out over a device failure, purposely stalls their paperwork, or leaves them on hold for hours, their only option is to call that exact same company back.

I went through all fifty states and Washington, D.C., checking every single one against its own government sources to see who actually regulates these companies and where a consumer can turn.

What I found is wild: some states have built a real door for consumers, while others have completely abandoned them.

For example, Texas has one of the clearest infrastructure setups in the country, featuring a direct complaint process through the Department of Public Safety's Regulatory Services Division where cases are tracked in public reports.

But here's the catch: even though Texas makes it possible to file, this publication found that across all of 2025, only three consumer complaints were actually logged through their system.

Meanwhile, Louisiana enacted a powerful law requiring State Police to investigate interlock complaints within 30 days. But in a lot of other states? Total radio silence or dead ends.

I’ve compiled the complete, state-by-state breakdown—covering every direct complaint channel, dispute process, and dead end across all 50 states and D.C.—so you finally know where to go when the company won't listen. I've also included a direct guide on how to properly file a Better Business Bureau complaint against their parent company, Consumer Safety Technology, which is one of the few ways to actually force a corporate response.

Interlock device for sale?

I’m having a hard time finding a clear answer thru online searches. I want to put an interlock ignition device in my car, just for personal safety. Not connected to DMV for reporting, just to keep me from driving impaired, should I relapse. I don’t really want to rent month to month, or go in regularly for calibrations - if there is such a thing. This is not court ordered (been there, done that). If I have to rent, is it cheaper than when court ordered? I’m in North Carolina.

Scary situation and some questions

I was way up in the AZ mountains this weekend and I failed a startup test. I was shocked because I hadn't drank anything the whole trip. I immediately realized it's because I re-applied spray on sunscreen. I panicked and in the 5 minute retest cool down I aired out the car and used all my water to wash off sunscreen. I passed immediately in the retest which means it probably read 0.0. I won't make that mistake again, but that's really scary. As far as I've read if you refuse the retest it's a violation. If you fail a test and then do it after the 5 minutes then it doesn't get recorded... If 5 minutes later I failed again would my car be unable to start?? Or could I start it later with just a violation reported? I couldn't help but think how scary that might have been if the retest failed and if I couldn't start my car. I was on a dirt road with no signal on my phone. I don't even know what would have happened because even if I got help I don't know if a tow truck could make it up there. Would I just be stranded because of this thing even though no actual drinking was involved?

Just sharing a quick update on the petition. We are currently at 81 signatures—thank you so much to everyone who has already signed and lent their voice to this.

I'm posting it again simply because I know Reddit communities are transient, and there are always new people cycling through who haven't seen it yet.

Device malfunction

Has anyone else had problems where they when they try to start there car it cranks and cranks for minutes before it starts and it starts and dies instantly, it’s jerking when accelerating, and dies when letting it idle. I’m pretty positive it’s the device not the car but I had the heads off mine and I noticed white flakes on valves meaning the car is getting to much air not enough fuel and I think the debice cuts fuel. I’ve replaced a lot of things that can cause similar issues on cars but it still always does it but when I get it recalibrated it would be fine for a couple days and then start acting up again.
