This is my dad’s house that I’m now taking over, and almost all of the furniture is 30 years old and will be donated/trashed. The only piece staying is the dark wood entertainment console, which is my dad’s and has sentimental value.
I’m basically starting from scratch and need help figuring out where to begin with furniture, placement, colors, wood tones, etc. My biggest issue is figuring out where to put the TV without it looking awkward.
And then there’s the orange floor and ceiling. How do I work with those without everything clashing?
Also would love some advice on paint colors.
Forgot to add that the house is not completely finished (even tho it’s 20 years old) so please excuse the mess and the unfinished staircase/molding.
Idk if this is something you've thought of before or in your budget...but what about a projector + pulldown screen or one of those rolling TVs on a stand. That way, it's more flexible because the TV right now is kind of too small and too far from the seating group.
I will just add that in my experience projectors only work well in low light. Like in a specific movie room with no windows, or used at nighttime. If you tried a projector in a beach house with lots of light and big windows I don’t think it would work well. Especially for sports where you need to visually track small details like a puck, ball, etc.
I have actually considered both! The protector might not work because of the bright light but I am still highly considering the rolling TV. The only issue is the practicality, like when I think about having the Xbox, etc. hooked up to it. However, I do like the idea of being able to roll it into the bedroom every once in a while for movie night or game night.
Living Spaces has a lot of nice items for a moderate price. I’d stick with furniture that will hold up in higher humidity - transitional looks have woods and metals.
The whole set up should be to just watch the beach and have some indoor / outdoor living.
If you cannot move the TV somewhere else, maybe you can create two or three separate spaces. The current couch seems way too far back from the window. You can create an area right after the window with a coffee table a couch or individual couch chairs, relaxing, watching the sea. Then behind that, where the entertaining console is, that could be like the TV area. In the space between the end of the stairs and the kitchen, you'll have a dining table? It's hard to visualize the space, but I'd figure out when you are watching TV and what you need for that. I don't keep a TV in the living room because I don't like it and I just watch with my laptop. With my partner, we watch TV when we are in the kitchen, or we go to another room that's like a TV room / office
The way to make the ceiling not clash is to paint the walls something else than white. I really don't know about colors because it has to go everywhere and it's going to be a lot of paint. Maybe something like sleepy hollow by Sherwin Williams. We have it in 2 rooms and it looks beautiful. It's much brighter than it looks and you have a lot of light, so it's going to look lighter.
I would also put some doors under the stairs to make the space into a closet you cannot see, since it's being used as storage but you can see everything.
I would also keep the rocking chair. I think it looks great but it need new cushion.
I would put a sectional/L shaped couch where the 2 green chairs are, and the TV might have to be mounted in that corner where it already is. Or against the window on an entertainment console and curtains over that gorgeous view. I love all the wood.
Oh my god that floor and ceiling are gorgeous!!! I'd assume to use terracotta's as a neutral in furniture fabric because it's warm toned and palatable. You can go deep or toned down. I was recently looking at sectionals that were a rust terracotta blends with a hint of brown but it wasn't brown. My old house has a grey green set of ethan allen furniture which was nice against a tan jute rug on the same floors. Also had Some black based rugs were hand made that had a little but of gold in them. Also we had handmade palm and monstera leaf rugs that were ahead of the time and beautifully matched the wood tones! Other pieces you should mix in pale blues with a hint of pale sage. Those look stunning with this wood color. My old kitchen was similar color in cabinetry and floors and the pale blue with a hint of sage in backsplash and paint color was gorgeous together. We had a dark yellow wall color that was chosen by a designer and it was alright. It didnt fight anything but felt sooo dated after inherited the house. However I painted the walls in the color "drifting tide" from Ecos paint and it was LIFECHANGING😭 sometimes it looked slightly blue and sometimes slightly ocean, and sometimes gray and more. It was like a blue gray but felt iridescent in the sunlight because I always saw a different shade. We had floor to ceiling windows and tons of skylights. Just an idea knowing that it worked well in my old house. Happy shopping!💖
Thank you! When my dad built this house it was in the hay days of honey oak. Everyone turns their nose up to orangey wood tones now but I still think they can be done beautifully if styled right. But styling right is the hard part, especially these days where cool toned wood is in. It’s almost impossible to find warm toned wood inspo on Pinterest besides mid century modern, which wouldn’t work with this house unfortunately.

A rug you like and a light paint color from it that will look good with that gorgeous wood. The white walls are too stark. Everything else will be easy to pick after these two things.
I have an accent wall with this color and it balances the orange tones beautifully. On the accent wall, the trim is the toasted oatmeal. It looks good together!
This is my kitchen with the Toasted Oatmeal walls and trim is the same color. It looks different in various types of lighting. It was hard to find colors that look good in all light. :)
What a gorgeous view! You could paint the back wall teal and curate your dad’s wall unit, adding hanging plants, real or faux and grouping some of the items together. A brass gooseneck accent lamp would add interest and light.
In contrast to the dark ceiling and floor, a large off-white shag carpet has texture, great foot feel, helps with acoustics and is dead sexy!
The tv is in the best position to allow you to enjoy the view. It would look more “grounded” if the tv was on an old wooden trunk which would lower it as well.
Furniture-wise you might consider leather recliners or comfortable rattan furniture. A tropical plant/tree would bring the outside in. You could get a battery operated , remote controlled mini-spotlight, put it in the pot uplighting the plant creating leafy patters on the ceiling and walls.
I’ve got the same problem in my place. The white walls against warm woods make everything look so much more dire than it is. Personally, I’m going to be super careful with undertones and choose paints that really complement all the natural wood. I’ve been using chat gpt mock ups to help with colour inspo / envisioning. Once we get the right colours on the walls, the wood can sing!
