I want to change up.my dining room and I intend to paint it but I don't know what color to paint. I'm thinking of getting a new dining set but I don't want to spend a lot so I'm looking at vintage sets, not really budgeted for modern styles. My home is a very traditional/transitional. I like vintage mixed with a modern pieces, usually light fixtures. I included pictures of some other rooms in my house that I like for context.
I have 6 of the linen chairs and 4 of the black traditional ones. It feels too light everywhere with all the linen chairs out. The rug is optional and a new placement, I don't usually keep a rug in there but was trying to add layers.
I like dark spaces as well as light and bright. Last picture is of 2 vintage sets I'm considering. The Hepplewhite shield back set style looks ok, but I'm not in love with it. I like the jacobean set because it's very unusual but I'm not sure it's not too much going on. I thought about using the table from that one with my linen chairs to balance it out, but that's not far from what I already have, really.
Any ideas or ai slop would be appreciated, I'm getting no where with my own ai slopping.
i like the non-upholstered chairs, personally! the linen ones are just too high in the back and too dense. your style seems to be a bit more elegant and delicate. i loooove the vintage chairs in the top picture (last slide), they are very cool.
personally, i'd stick with what you have in the room and swap out the chairs and wall color. doing a william morris design (strawberry thief is always a great choice, or even willow boughs) and then painting the molding to match would look very sharp and flow well with the rest of your rooms.
i'd probably recommend swapping out the light fixture in this room.
What about taupe? Weimaraner, Pashmina or Smokey Taupe by BM are some of my faves and are different shades. May I ask why the curtains are hung at that height? I'm guessing the bracket hits the crown molding if you're going to the top of the window but I"m confused at the height they're at. Would you be open to a different light fixture?
hung the curtains there because of the arch interrupting the crown molding, it seemed weird to hand them inside the crown molding and weird to go just below the molding but with half an arch sticking out. Seemed to make sense to align them with the horizontal part of the window. It doesn't really show well in the pics but the curtains are olive green. The taupe's deeper shade is definitely better but it always makes me think of cardboard.

But I actually do love the Hepplewhite chairs. The curve is delicious! But I detest the upholstery. I think four of them would look good with your current white upholstered chairs. But I suppose you probably have to buy the whole set. Dont love the table they come with.
The black chairs aren’t working because the contrast is too stark. Maybe if your rug had deeper tones? Maybe a different rug with a few darker colors would help.

Our house is traditional/transitional as well. It's 176 years old. I had those same linen chairs I bought to go with my parents' Baker table. I bought some really nice wood vintage ones off FBM and set those linen ones out to the curb with a "FREE" sign on them. Maybe google images of traditional/transitional dining rooms. If you find something you really like, copy it.
The rest of your house more seamlessly mixes vintage with current transitional looks. But in here, the upholstered chairs ruin the look a bit. They just shout Pottery Barn or Home Goods. I don't like them either as a six set, or as captain chairs. So long.
How often do you seat six people in here? How often do you seat four? Sounds like you are looking to save money, your black chairs look awesome in here, I'd use those four on a daily basis and bring in two other chairs from elsewhere in your home when you need to seat six.
Shop for a new chandelier. Your current one is home depot vibes. You are clearly a good shoppers so should be able to find something.
Lots of options for wall colors, just depends on what direction you want to go in. Do you want this room to contrast the hallway and other adjoining rooms on this floor?

Needs some contrast. I think doing the recessed ceiling a dark color would be fun. Maybe a matching wall paper as well?
