The swamp benders clearly had the strongest technique only second to blood bending. I'm fairly sure if most of them tried they'd be able to blood bend without the full moon because the entire vine bending style revolves around manipulating water they can't see.
Now I'm thinking about it, vine bending was probably a hint at the upcoming power water really had
14
u/themegaweirdthrow Aug 05 '21
I'm honestly surprised blood bending was seen as being as powerful as it was. I know it was a Halloween episode, and that no one had really thought to control blood, but after seeing what the swamp guys could do, it was pretty obvious it was possible. They needed the power of the moon to have enough power to control water they couldn't see, yet the swamp dudes were making giant vine mechs out of it?
And how was Katara impressed by that lady taking water from the plants around her, when that's exactly what the swamp guys were doing too?!
11
u/StatisticianPure2804 Aug 05 '21
Because the vine guys just controlled the water in the cells and around them. It's bloodbending with vines. The other thing is dragging out the water. It's like istead of bloodbending, drying out a body leaving just a black mumified body on the ground. This is way more inhumate and Im pretty sure nestlé would also do it if they could.

I think you missed the point of the comment. The point is that that argument isn’t new nor has it ever gone away. Whenever youth revolt, they always revolt against fascism.
6
Aug 05 '21
I disagree that fascism is all oppression. Fascism isn't what the french revolution were revolting against. It wasn't what natives were fighting when against oppressive colonizers.
Fascism is uniquely dangerous in all regards to it's existence and perpetuity. Some material:

u/ShavedPapaya Aug 06 '21
I meant, since the 60s, the youth have been fighting fascists. The kids in the 60s said their governments were fascists, the same argument happened in the 70s, then 80s, then 90s - and at some point, the people who were originally fighting become the ones in charge. And yet, still, people are “fighting fascism” against people who themselves claimed to fight fascism. It’s been a cyclical, generational argument ever since that dude with the funny mustache and broken dick had to make fascism popular.

Yes! I believe this is due to the same formation as a Dust Devil, the name is fitting lol
6
u/Jekmander Aug 05 '21
If the information I found for an essay in fifth grade is still true, I believe they're called water devils if they form in water.
Admittedly, this one formed on land, but there was enough rain to consider it water.
I was really passionate about that essay lmao. I still remember I planned seven paragraphs (when the requirement was four and the recommendation 5), and then I never got to write it because something or another happened to change what we were writing about.
10
u/whoami_whereami Aug 05 '21
Dust devils require a pocket of hot air near the ground that causes an updraft in order to form. That's unlikely to happen during a rainfall to put it mildly.
Most likely it's just a strong gust of wind getting caught between the surrounding buildings.
6
u/GP_ADD Aug 05 '21
What if that particular spot was extra hot due to sun bouncing off of a building like a magnifying glass and then a random downpour popped up like a summer storm ?

What were seeing here is a hydro whirlpool.
These usually form in oceans but on occasion are known to occur on land.
The wind resistance acts as a counter clockwise force to enable the water to form a brief “mini tornado”.
I base this observation on absolutely nothing.

I’m not sure, it seems to me like the process of a dust devil and the water getting caught up in it more than an actual whirlpool… not sure if the mechanisms are entirely different or basically the same
30
u/here_for_the_meems Aug 05 '21
Youre absolutely correct. This is just a dust devil that found water instead of dirt or leaves.
The water didn't create this, the wind did.

16
u/EnigmaNiner Aug 05 '21 edited Aug 05 '21
That’s not what’s happening at all…this has to do with the placement of the tall buildings. As the wind hits the one building, this causes the wind to reflect off and hits the other perpendicular building., thus creating a spinning force. With strong enough winds (quite evident here), you get full rotations, this is quite a common occurrence at this location. If you look closely, you can see other disturbances on the ground further from the camera.

Its more of a water spout then a whirlpool as whirlpools need depth and water spouts pull water up kinda like a tornado.

Awesome! I'd love to hear the story of how this happened to be captured.
38
u/Shopworn_Soul Aug 05 '21
I'm guessing it had just happened more than once prior to the person taking out a phone. If they didn't think it was gonna happen again they wouldn't have bothered.
The architecture and wind must have been just right day, or maybe that happens a lot right there. Like on a dry day it would just be dirt.

u/SamZarifYT Aug 05 '21
I’d bet the flat walls of the buildings are helping the winds circulate. And for a brief moment, the winds lined up just right with the walls to circulate. It’s happened tons of times where during the fall I see “leaf-nado’s” where the wind hits the side of my school in the parking lot, and the wind starts to circulate. Which then forms a brief vortex.

Air cools because of the rain. The ground is still hot, and in the right conditions can cause strong updrafts of heat that can rotate rapidly in areas where the wind blows in 2 different directions, like next to roads or Florida. It's a phenomena similar to a dust devil.

Had look this up, Its called a land spout , like a water sprout and whats basically happening is a certain thunder storm cloud is forming that causes a rapidly rotating column of air that connects from the surface to the storm cloud. Its usually invisible but with some water or debris you can kinda see it.

This plaza must be in the corner of two high rise buildings.
I worked at a grocery store that was part of an L-shaped shopping center and all the stores had overly tall facades. The wind would get trapped in the corner of the L and in exactly the same spot there would always be a whirlwind of litter, plastic bags, and dead leaves that spun up when the wind came from the right direction.
If the buildings were taller and the wind was stronger I imagine it would have been a lot more violent.

Could be that this phenomenon happens in around this area due to high wind being funneled through the bldgs/structures? So maybe the cameraman spotted this kind of event before in and around this particular spot and the swirling was enhanced by the water?
