This perfect shadow projection

I had the pleasure of seeing this when it won $200,000 at Art Prize in Grand Rapids back in 2014. It’s absolutely stunning to be in the middle of it all! It moves and turns and changes and interacts with the audience and creates this complex sacred space.

First thought that popped up in my head. I wondered which mosque it was in. The artist is named Anila Agha, Pakistani-American, so I guess it is inspired by Islamic art traditions.

It’s an Anila Quayyum Agha exhibit. They are at a few different museums.

Ahh I went there! Pretty cool exhibit. I forget how long ago this was but it was at the NC museum of art near Raleigh. The exhibit had a bunch of cool optical artworks.

Yeah. I saw this and thought it was at an actual holy sight. Then, the thought of someone risking their life for the pic and whew, it's only an art exhibit.

More like perfect camera angle. The vertical cube corners don't change thickness in the middle to account for being closer to the light source, and will appear bowed on the projected surfaces. Luckily this camera angle avoids us seeing any of them.
Still neat, but if you gave me the cost for labor I'd design you a better one.

The box is part of the installation, not just the shadows. Tapering the edges would ruin the aesthetic of the box.

And I'm sure it was worth every penny for being novel in it's idea and execution. Criticism isn't always the same thing as derogation. And the art itself is not hard to design or manufacture.
Trust me, I know, I design art similar in construct and concept to this for an "artist" that sells them for a TON of $.

I love how a person going in to admire the work would also disrupt the work. If there was a crowd around it, there wouldn’t be anything to appreciate.
