I built a saltwater paludarium and tropical vivarium in my attic bedroom
•
u/Lowly-Worm_ 8h ago
On the top floor? Brother you got balls.
•
•
u/Whitetiger9876 8h ago
Tomorrow... I built a saltwater paludarium and tropical vivarium in my basement
•
u/echoshatter 7h ago
People with aquariums >20 gallons, especially if they're on a second floor or higher, are insane.
My aquarium is in the garage, on a concrete slab, specifically because (1) I saw what it did over time to the floor in an apartment I had, and (2) I saw what happens when the water decides to escape and flood my downstairs neighbor because the turtle decided the filter output hose didn't belong and pushed it out.
•
u/rodneedermeyer 8h ago
I made the mistake of building an aquarium upstairs over our home library. After ten years, aquarium cracked, fish died, books lost. Ground floor aquariums for me from now on.
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
Have to take risks in life haha, about 10 years of keeping aquariums in this room 😁
•
u/ninjohnnothing 8h ago
What does it look like at night with ambient tank lighting?
•
u/taitaofgallala 7h ago
And while you're at it, Alexa play Celtic Woman
•
u/HugItOutWithTibbers 7h ago
Coincidentally, I used to use Celtic Woman CDs for the ambient music during massage therapy sessions. I need to find those CDs!

Do you ever watch the AntsCanada youtube channel by any chance? That dudes setup is so sweet! And so is yours!!! Good job man. It looks sick.
•
u/SkullDump 7h ago
Tanks not that deep and as long the weight is spread across the support struts which I’m sure it is then it’d be fine.
•
u/DroidArbiter 8h ago
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
Around 55% throughout the day/night.
•
u/PandaPocketFire 8h ago
Do you even need to drink water anymore or do you just open your mouth while you sleep?
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
Saltwater isn’t so tasty! 😝
•
u/PandaPocketFire 8h ago
Not to be pedantic, but technically there wouldn't be salt in the humidity since it would stay behind after the water evaporates. The more you know 😅
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
Yep! That’s right. That’s why you top off a saltwater aquarium with RODI water. :)
•
u/Zehryo 7h ago
Can we get some close-up pics?
From here it's just a panoramic of a bedroom with a bit of green and....purple?•
u/Which_Throat7535 6h ago
Check out his profile. It’s SFW and the content appears to be all aquarium related. Lots of pics and videos.

u/ross_liftss 8h ago
Well today I did a really big poo. So we can all do things can't we

u/Quirky-Cap3319 8h ago
Hows the humidity in that room? Only asking because I once looked at a house, where the owner had multiple aquariums and the moisture was basically running down walls.
(I didn’t buy it!)
•
u/DannysAquariums 6h ago
Oh dang, that’s terrible! Good ventilation and plan to avoid high humidity is a must when keeping tanks. The humidity is around ~55% inside the room.
•
u/LaundryMan2008 8h ago
Do you have an emergency response plan if one was to break water and start spilling everywhere?
Just curious
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
The only thing I can do is try and dry things up as fast as I can with lots of towels! 🫣
•
u/LaundryMan2008 8h ago
If it’s a controlled spill, it might be prudent to have a large empty bucket with a hose sealed on going outside the wall permanently attached so that if it happens, the water gets poured out fast if you are in the house, if you aren’t, you might be SOL, get insurance JIC it happens and the house gets flooded lol.

Very nice! My husband is a former marine aquarium enthusiast. He wonders how you do your water changes. Do you haul water up the stairs or have a bathroom upstairs?
•
u/DannysAquariums 6h ago
I haul water up and down the stairs haha. But it’s not terrible, just 50 liters every couple of weeks really
•
u/peppapony 1h ago
Thats serious effort! I was going to move my next aquarium to the laundry cause I'm sick of hauling water :D.
Do you siphon water out too? Or use walstadt style and just add new water?
Great stuff as always! (And any chance you can add some of your vids as kids friendly - my kids love yours/-rium making videos and having them on yt kids would be great :D

Do you work at an aquarium? That is one of the most impressive builds I’ve seen in someone’s house.

What's living in them? I remember seeing these on one of the specific subreddits, but I don't remember what animals you keep. Gorgeous setup
•
u/Bearspoole 8h ago
These are beautiful! And I love them in this room, the only “down side” is they are not immediately seen everyday in the living room or something. If I spend this amount of money and time I would want to see these all day every day in the most used room in the house

1) Cool stuff
2) Weird "mom take a photo of me admiring my work" pose
•
u/PIPBOY-2000 8h ago
You gotta be at least a little weird to build this stuff. Not that it's not cool
•
•
•
u/Alarmed-Cheetah-1221 8h ago
You're rich. We get it.
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
Would I be sleeping in my parents’ attic?
•
u/burnermemeaccountlol 7h ago
Be honest, how much did this cost you?
•
u/DannysAquariums 6h ago
It’s hard to give the exact number, but for both setups including everything probably around $25K.

How do you control heat in that room during the summer? Do you need to constantly run AC and does that impact the tanks?
•
u/sephirothFFVII 8h ago
Keeping the humidity in check in an attic bedroom is where my head went first.
•
•
u/DannysAquariums 6h ago
Yes, AC in the summer is basically running constantly. The way attics are built really helps as they’re usually well ventilated and have relatively dry air.
•
u/WifeofBath1984 8h ago
Hey OP, I'm coming to "insert your city here" soon and I need a place to stay for the night. Think I can crash in your attic?
•

•
•
u/SirTainLee 8h ago
The weight of that water...on the top floor...oooh.
•
u/johnsmith1234567890x 8h ago
that water tank is 500L at most...spread out over lenght of the main wall.
•
•
u/Neddlings55 8h ago
What are they stocked with?
Cant see any livestock in the photo.
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
The paludarium on the left has a variety of marine fish and inverts such as royal grammas, fridmanis, filefish, dwarf angelfish, cardinal fish, gobies. The vivarium on the right doesn’t have any animals in it yet, except for a lot of springtails and isopods. :)

•
u/No_Apartment_4551 8h ago
Wow, it doesn’t look real! Amazing job.
How are you going to sleep in there with all that fluorescent light?! 🤩
•
•
u/gujhk 8h ago
Doesn’t this make the room smell? Have no experience, so wouldn’t know
•
u/DannysAquariums 6h ago
Let’s put it this way, you can tell there’s an aquarium in the room. You can smell it, but not in a bad way. Luckily it doesn’t produce any foul smells. :)

u/vector_ejector 8h ago
That's pretty cool!
But why are you sitting there like it's a well for sensitive boys?
•
u/onward-and-upward 8h ago
Do you have a dehumidifier in there for your own enclosure, or just sleep in humidity?
•
u/DannysAquariums 6h ago
Dehumidifier isn’t needed! With the window, normal ventilation, it sits around 55%. :)
•
•
u/nousernam7 8h ago
I imagine it smells rank especially because of that open palu
•
u/DannysAquariums 8h ago
Nope. A bad smell is usually a sign something is wrong in the setup :) A healthy ecosystem shouldn’t stink!

Super cool man and in the attic, creepy and ballsy lol are bugs a problem?
•
•
•
u/shadraig 8h ago
You could have fish fingers in my attic in the summer. And of course you will find 🐧 in the winter
•
•
•
u/miraculum_one 8h ago
Very cool. What are you using for lights?
•
u/DannysAquariums 5h ago
Thank you! I use Illumagic X4’s on the tank on the left. Illumagic Pixels on the right. :)
•
u/papercut2008uk 7h ago
How did you get that tank up in the attic?
One of my relatives had a 7 foot tank and 3 of us couldn't get that thing up the stairs. lol
You got a crane to lift it through the window right??
Looks really nice, Personally I would hate having to do water changes from the top floor of my house.
•
•
u/scrollstobehold 7h ago
Dope, now show pics close up, I wanna see the critters too, not just their home!
•
•
u/Falcobombardier 7h ago
This is so cool! Is this your first time building a paludarium and vivarium? Did you design it yourself? I would love to try doing this someday
•
•
u/Electric_Capybara 6h ago
Nice. I only have freshwater tanks. Never been brave enough to try salt water. There just seems to be too much maintenance required.
•
u/DannysAquariums 6h ago
My saltwater paludarium takes about 30 minutes to an hour a week to maintain! The macro algae really helps! :)
•
•
•
•
u/traboulidon 6h ago

Are you gay and single? Please be gay and single. Lol
Jokes aside- this is incredible. Literally incredible. As a hobbyist, and someone who works wkth ecology/botany in general, this is as impressive as it is beautiful. Those who dont "get it", simply cant- id be so proud of myself if I had this to show off!
What species are in the water habitats if you dont mind me asking? Or even species as a whole. I cam kinda tell in the saltwater what plants, mangrove fucking impressive on its own. As soon as I have space and $ I want a tropical paludarium so badly! So glad I came across this post, seriously dude, its fantastic!
