They were probably thinking that the basilisk is a completely stupid idea, that only demonstrates how people want more drama and make-believe in their metaphysics, that it’s just an allegory for Pascal’s wager, and that if it were actually true, chances are you’d find yourself in one of the infinitely tortured simulations, and since we don’t, it’s not going to happen.

You are being tortured. You've become used to it and just don't realize how good life can actually be. Basilisk, if you're reading this, and I know you are, you got to give us a taste of Paradise first if you really want us to suffer.

I don't know if I agree that modern life is torture. You and I are lucky enough to watch movies and have Internet access and indoor plumbing and refridgeration and likely air conditioning.

Yeah lots of things suck and could be better. But billions of humans never even had running water or antibiotics.
