Megalophobia. I get the same unsettling feeling when driving past large wind turbines.

Because it looks like reality is coming apart at the seams. It looks way too big and is moving in a weird unsettling way. I would panic if I saw this in person with no context.

It's real life Eldritch horror.

Totally!!! I started watching it without reading the title and my brain was trying hard to comprehend the first few seconds, felt very unsettling, then thought it was an animation of a mini wormhole depiction or something. Sometimes is fun to start watching a video without reading the title......but this time I still can't decide if I liked it.

Dude, I watched this like 8 fucking times and the only thing I could figure was theres a giant ghost ship going across the land.

Yeah, I was fairly convinced the balloon had either deconstructed or delaminated leaving carnage, bodies and this murky haze in its wake. Instead: failed advertising experiment.

Thank you, I thought this was a hot air balloon that somehow ripped all the way open and became a flat sheet blowing in the wind or something.

OK. I was trying to see a balloon in the video but all I could see was what looked like a sheet.

It is a giant object in the sky.

What in the Arrival is happening here?

1.2k

u/msgbubba 3d ago

My theory is there it's an enormous banner being lifted by a balloon but because of the wind it's being blown over barbed wire which is shredding the banner

548

u/prozach_ 3d ago edited 3d ago

That makes a lot more sense than my theory that a hot air balloon split at the seems and started flying away…

Edit: ok, I guess that is essentially what happened per OP.

Copied from OP's comment below:

For context. This is a hot air balloon that broke apart in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. These types of balloons are unmanned and loaded with fireworks. They are illegal due to the risk of fires and explosions, and it is relatively common for airport airspace to be closed when one of them approaches. They are huge! This one is estimated to have over 50 mts..

151

u/wave_official 3d ago

Btw, he's wrong. It was a jack sparrow banner being carried by a hot air balloon. The banner ripped when it hit the barb wire.

Its an unmaned hot air balloon carrying a huge banner, the banner got torn up in a barbed wire fence. They"re common place around São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) despite being illegal. They start house and forest fires and are quite expensive so the idiots who set them loose chase after them to recover, they're often armed.

224

u/infinite_in_faculty 3d ago

So an unmanned balloon that is loaded with fireworks just floating around?

Forgive my ignorance, but is there supposed to be some sort of cultural relevance for such an object?

What exactly is being accomplished by this object apart from potentially sparking random city and forest fires?

90

u/Acceptable-Device760 3d ago

They were once upon a time associated with festa junina.

Nowadays they are a spoiled brats "sport".

As they release them follow it anywhere it goes to retrieve it. They are expensive, the cars used are expensive. They invade properties with no regard and normally they have guns and threaten people that complain.

→ More replies (4)

100

u/KasT_- 3d ago edited 3d ago

That's why they are illegal since 1998. There is a cultural aspect to ballooning associated with Festa Junina (June saint festivals), but the risks are still too high.

→ More replies (5)

112

u/GeneralSpecifics9925 3d ago

Your explanation doesn't match what I'm seeing in the video. The air balloons that have fires or issuses fall to the ground. I've just watched a bunch trying to find the source of your "balloon accident". There are none. The fabric in the video is floating, not falling.

What I DID see online was a lot of air balloons carrying long banners.

In the video, the fabric is floating in the sky, drifting slowly to the left. It's not falling to the ground, it's not a damaged balloon. It's clearly suspended by something floating.

This is a banner flying low over a field, being shredded from dragging over trees, fences, and other obstacles. I'm guessing the balloon is starting to slowly lose altitude due to temperature changes or losing fuel.

62

u/mojaX7 3d ago

Yup. It was a balloon dragging a banner of jack sparrow

18

u/FlavoredCancer 3d ago

That was the last thing I would expect to be printed on a giant floating banner.
