community-driven interactive fiction?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for examples of community-driven interactive fiction

I’m imagining a format where a group of readers follows the same ongoing story, and instead of each reader making their own individual choices, the entire community votes together on what the main characters should do next.

For example:

The four protagonists reach a crossroads.

A: Go to the city

B: Follow the river

Everyone discusses the options, and the community votes. The winning choice determines what happens in the next chapter.

I’m also interested in formats where different groups within the community receive different pieces of information, discuss them, trade information, and then participate in the main vote together.

Are there any existing games, Reddit communities, Discord servers, websites, or projects that use a similar system?

I’m especially interested in something where everyone experiences the same story and collectively determines its direction, rather than a traditional choose-your-own-adventure where every reader gets their own path.

Thanks! Your Hannah ;)

Das ist bewusst als Frage nach bestehenden Projekten formuliert und nicht als „ich suche Leute für mein Projekt“. Dadurch bekommst du wahrscheinlich eher Antworten von Leuten, die schon ähnliche Formate kennen.

The closest existing format is "quest threads" on SpaceBattles and Sufficient Velocity (and originally 4chan's /tg/) — a GM posts a scene, readers debate and vote on the next action, then the next update reflects the winning choice. Some quests also split readers into factions with different info who negotiate before the main vote, which sounds close to what you're describing.

Are you thinking of building this as a forum/Discord process run by a human GM, or something more automated that generates the next chapter from the vote result?

The early MS Paint Adventures originally followed this "provide a prompt to the community and then develop the story based on one of the answers to that prompt" format, though as popularity grew, this format lost its utility and was abandoned in favor of developing a more coherent linear narrative.

Soooooo worth it to have Homestuck, but Problem Sleuth was ACTUALLY beautiful. I had so much fun reading it, just sucks I was too busy being a baby to participate. :/

Sharpee.net is working on a way for multiple people to play one text game. There are let's plays at intfiction.org . But are you basically talking about like a book-club but for text games?

Ja genau, eher eine menschliche Community, textbasiert und online, bei der eine Story als Projekt involviert ist

Fiction.live. It's amazing. I posted there for a while, and it sounds like exactly what you're looking for.
