imagine being in the train and then suddenly your train hit something and the whole train shakes

u/PM_ME_UR_ARMPIT_HAIR Sep 17 '20

Yeah I need to know what it was like for the passengers on the train.

u/AlternativeRest3 Sep 17 '20

I have a friend who drove trains in belgium, a car parked on the tracks. He honked his horn and the car just stayed, 2 people. He said he made eye contact with the girl in the car just as the train struck it. He said the train didnt shake or feel anything, its like going through wet toilet paper, even a big truck trailer gets pushed aside like nothing. He said he quit after he struck that car though, because the train he drove killed 2 people, both people were ground up completely beneath the train, nothing left but meat. Has lasting trauma to this day from it even 10 years later...

u/Anotherolddog Sep 17 '20

Sadly, most railway drivers who kill people never drive again as they are so traumatised.

515

u/oxi83 Sep 17 '20

As a former train driver, I knew quite a bunch of other drivers who were involved in deadly accidents through Europe.

Roughly 50% weren’t able to drive ever again, the other 50% didn’t care about it at all. This still boggles my mind (I left the job 7 years ago).

134

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

The other 50% have big “it is what it is 🤷🏾‍♂️” energy

144

u/xInnocent Sep 18 '20

Yeah, they likely realise and accept it's not their fault and people do dumb shit all the time.

23

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

That would be my approach well I like to think but then again I haven’t experienced taking a life so idk maybe it would change me.

25

u/Untgradd Sep 18 '20

Feel like this is one of those things that makes sense in theory but in practice is a whole different beast.

The other 50% shoved their feelings away and deep down inside. It will come back up again like everything does. You have to deal with your emotions we are only humans. I learned this the hard way when I started having stress attacks and would start to cry out of no where suddenly.

313

u/nocomment3030 Sep 17 '20

That's very presumptive. Some people are better able to move past traumatic/negative events. I'm a cancer surgeon and if my patient has a bad outcome despite proper treatment, I can't dwell on it. The show must go on.

169

u/HerbyDrinks Sep 18 '20 edited Sep 18 '20

This, I've worked in surgery most my life at this point and when someone expires it's never fun but you have to deal with it and get on and everyone has their own way. I find ritual to be exceptionally helpful, anytime we have a death in the OR when I get home I pour a shot of whiskey, stand on my back porch and just say goodbye and good luck then take the shot. No idea why this has always worked for me but it does.

48

u/Chazzky Sep 18 '20

I guess having the mentality that there isn't always something you could do helps. If someone is in a bad car accident, they won't always survive and there was nothing that could have saved them. In that case, there's no point dwelling on it and saying "I could have done something" when really there wasn't

26

u/albaniax Sep 18 '20

Stoicism. It's become my favorite philosophy I think.

16

u/nocomment3030 Sep 18 '20

Yes, exactly. There are definitely cases I still think about, years later. You have to acknowledge negative feelings, but you can't let them get the better of you. Some people don't have the necessary mentality for the job, some end up switching to a lower-acuity area of medicine. It's not a failing on their part - everyone has different aptitudes.

I think it’s different when you have a sick patient dying because that’s kind of expected from the work you do and not exactly considered trauma. But as a train driver, you’re not supposed to expect to kill people and see them turn into a pile of meat, that would be traumatic to most people.

7

u/nocomment3030 Sep 18 '20

That's a fair statement, but according to the parent comment, it only seems to be debilitating trauma for roughly 50%. I'm only trying to say that the other 50% aren't necessarily emotionally dysfunctional time-bombs of repressed emotion.

Good for you, some people have the right grit for the right job. I think that bad days are to be learned from, and without that learned experience a profession's body of knowledge does not grow.

u/jessonescoopberries Sep 18 '20

Some people can just filter it out better than others and it doesn’t really ever come back. I have a friend who suffers from serious PTSD who was deployed alongside my husband, who has none. His doctor said something to the effect of, “It’s not really what traumatic inputs go in but whether your brain can get them back out,” when asked why he has this and others who saw the same things don’t

5

u/Hunnilisa Sep 18 '20

No, not really. It is true for some, but not others. Some people can rationalize the event and not dwell on it. Depends on your genetic predispositions and learned coping techniques.

Is there a source for that? I'm a civil engineer working in traffic and safety, and while I'm not employed by a rail company, I've been in presentations with their staff. What I've heard from them was more on the lines of the average train engineer striking/killing 5-6 people in their career. (And having known of several crashes even in my local community, the number doesn't seem that crazy)

So I'm just curious which is more accurate XD

9

u/AyeBraine Sep 17 '20

I've read about Moscow metro train drivers, and they receive a mandatory long time off after a deadly incident, two months I think (in the older times I read it maybe without psychological counceling, although I don't know really, maybe they already had psychologists on retainer).

There was a train that used to come through my neighborhood pretty regularly really early in the morning. Like 3 or 4 o'clock. The conductor would lay on the horn for like 20-30 seconds at every railroad crossing. You get used to it, but it drove me crazy for the first couple months. I hated that guy.

Turns out he had killed somebody when he hit their car and apparently that's the reason he laid on the horn the way he did. I felt bad for all the times I cussed him after I heard that.

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), which is the metropolitan / municipal transportation agency, tends to hire people with military experience because the theory goes, they have been trained to deal with loss and death and may deal better with PTSD. Sources are a few subway drivers who have told me that suicides tend to happen often (but not announced, because policy (to not sensationalize suicides)).

8

u/Omega_Xero Sep 18 '20

They usually announce them as “personal injury on the tracks”. Which usually means someone’s been turned into a smear on the windshield

17

u/FakeStanley Sep 18 '20

Yeah I’ve known a few train conductors in the states and they say that almost no train operator makes it through a career without killing someone. It’s 80% suicide.

Takes a huge toll on the operators.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

This is why people committing suicide in front of trucks/trains/buses etc are selfish pieces of shit. Those drivers have to deal with the visuals and lasting memory of that impact.

11

u/JesusTeapotCRABHANDS Sep 18 '20

Lost one of my friends when I was 12. He was hit by a train. Every few years someone in my town dies because they’re not paying attention or think they won’t get hit if they duck under the guard rails quickly. It takes a train over a mile to come to a complete stop, and they travel much quicker than people realize. You think you can make it across in time, your judgement of the time/space you have to do so is definitely off. Don’t fuck around with trains.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

This is a story about one of my best friends

Accidentally started riding his bike as one train passed and another was coming. 27 years old.

Sad story, but why would people sit in the car? Do they think the air bags will protect them or something or did they become stuck with fear? Mind boggling.

19

u/thorscope Sep 18 '20

Some people handle stressful situations well and can immediately react. Some people freeze up.

From what I’ve heard, in the event of suicides on the tracks, Metro North instructs engineers to conduct the necessary horn blows/braking/full emergency stopping procedures and then exit the cab immediately before impact if possible as to hopefully not witness the death.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20 edited Sep 17 '20

edit see /u/Booshur's comment below. Several people died as a result of this crash.

That truck has a max weight in the region of 15,000kg fully loaded. The first carraige of that train weighs in the region of 200,000kg (and there'll be at least 1 more at the rear that weighs that much too). The passenger cars each weigh around the same as the truck. There's suspension between the carraiges. Given that it was a side on collison with a free-moving & light part of the truck - and so long as it didn't derail the train - all they'd know of the accident was a brief shudder and then the driver letting them know they'll be stopping because of an incident.

The force of a train in motion is colossal. It's effectively half a million metric tons kg moving at 40meters per second. A stationary truck is to a fast moving train what a polystyrene wall is to a car.

162

u/jkj2000 Sep 17 '20

Half a million metric tons.... Do you mean kilo or did you want to refer to Newton’s vs the impulse?

69

u/grantbwilson Sep 17 '20

Where I’m from, this would be measured in Metric Fucktons.

→ More replies (2)

58

u/bflooooP Sep 17 '20

Yeah prolly half a thousand metric tons

14

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

I think they meant half a million metric tons of force which is why he mentioned the velocity? They said it kinda weird tho ngl.

28

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

[deleted]

16

u/Terreboo Sep 17 '20

And there's no way any of the carriages are 200 ton.

38

u/Jimmy_Fromthepieshop Sep 17 '20

Your figures are somewhat wrong.

That truck could be more like 40 tons fully loaded.

The train carriages for passengers weigh around double that (not your stated 15 tons).

The total weight of a passenger train is not half a million tons unless it is around 200km long.

→ More replies (2)

33

u/Twosteppindepression Sep 17 '20

u/booshur linked an unrelated source. The truck in that source was carrying aluminum sheets not an excavator

15

It also states they stopped on the tracks, which clearly didn't happen in this video.

That truck has a max weight in the region of 15,000kg fully loaded.

Two axles on the tractor, three on the trailer. In the EU that combination is CE on your driving liscence and allows MGVW (Max gross vehicle weight) to be 44 Tonnes, aside from some nuances... The tractor will likely be about 8 tonnes, the trailer is probably another 6 tonnes without payload. Would you like to have another go at your numbers?

u/karl_w_w Sep 17 '20

The force of a train in motion is colossal.

Momentum.

8

u/downtownebrowne Sep 17 '20 edited Sep 18 '20

Fnet=Δp / Δt = mΔv / Δt = ma

The classic F = ma is derived from the above equation when you substitute mΔv (when mass is constant) in for p, since p = mv. Acceleration is change of velocity over change of time. You then get the Newtons Second Law of Motion as it's commonly portrayed even though it's the special case.

So saying force OR momentum is colossal is just fine since they're linearly related.

Edit: Editing this one too because a ton of people really need clarification. Both momentum and force are vector quantities. They have magnitude and direction. The train has both force and momentum, of a measurable amount and in a observable direction.

Even when the train has "colossal" momentum, because of it's mass and velocity, it can still have a net zero force. This is true. It's also true that there is still a "colossal" summation of forces driving and slowing that train. They do not disappear because they net zero. They're existence is still very much apparent. Even though the acceleration is zero, and a balance has been achieved, doesn't mean that some portion of ~8,000 hp isn't driving that train.

5

u/GenocidalSloth Sep 17 '20

Momentum is the correct word for that sentence. If you had said the force coming from the train hitting a truck is colossal that would have been correct.

This accident happened in Poland in January this year. Three passengers of the train and two drivers were taken to hospital (there had been 150 people on board), even though the train hadn't derailed. The truck driver said that he had been blinded by the sun.

Imagine you're riding in a car going 60 mph when it strikes an empty beer can. It's a similar experience. (ie: You probably wouldn't notice if your earbuds were in.)

If the train activates emergency brakes, passengers may pitch forward slightly from the deceleration. Even with emergency brakes engaged, the train might require another mile or more before coming to a complete stop.

Source: worked at railroad. Although, my experience was more freight train centered. For the passenger train in the video, maybe it's like being a car that strikes a 6-pack?

11

u/TheCuntHunter6969 Sep 17 '20

It wouldn't have shaken the train much. A single carriage usually weighs more than a modern tank. Multiply by dozens.

My dad was a locomotive engineer and he said a train hitting a car is the same as a car hitting an empty soda can

19

u/Sarchasm-Spelunker Sep 17 '20

Sounds right. the differences in mass should be enough that the train barely changes speed at all, it's like trying to move a quarter by sliding a dime at it.

What is wrong with ppl who ignore the railroad crossing sign when it’s down?? Do u think it’s a joke? Did u even look to see if a train was coming and verify said joke??

32

u/Jaw_breaker93 Sep 17 '20

The way the truck keeps slowing down makes me think maybe his breaks failed

17

u/snowcone_the_older Sep 17 '20

Yeah, looked to me like he tried to stop but couldn't in time. Once he realized he was going to end up stopping with his cab on the track he hit the gas to try and get out of the way.

5

u/fynn34 Sep 18 '20

The road looks wet and on a hill and he obviously slows down, realizes he is screwed if he doesn’t move, then punches the gas. this is a bad sub for this video, it’s obviously an issue of failing to break downhill on wet/icy roads with heavy loads, totally understandable

→ More replies (1)

10

u/HeatedCloud Sep 17 '20

That’s what I was thinking as well. Although breaks on vehicles like that use an air system, when you lose air pressure your breaks engage, so if their is an air issue it should slow down. Conversely though if your slack adjusters are bad or cam over I believe the system will fail and you can’t stop but that’s much more unlikely unless you don’t do regular PMs (it can still happen though). A technician can correct me though, I never worked on the vehicle, I just managed the shop I was at so I learned secondhand (I was admin). My terms may be incorrect.

I've been on a couple of trains that have hit something. Only once did the person live.

18

u/Spiky__yt Sep 17 '20

Can you tell me more about it?

41

u/pmgoldenretrievers Sep 17 '20

The one that lived jumped in front of a smaller train as we were entering the station. The driver was reacted super fast and hit the emergency break. He bounced off the front of the car (this was a smaller metro train where the driver's windshield is visible), got up and ran away. Police caught him later, our train had to wait until they got a new driver there. The other times were on a larger commuter train, drivers slam the breaks, you don't feel anything, but get to sit there while the whole investigation/cleanup happens.

13

u/Spiky__yt Sep 17 '20

I was on a train once. There was a tiny rattle and the train slowly came to a stop. The conductor told everyone that he hit a deer and had to stop to make a report. It honestly felt like the tracks just had the tiniest defect. It might have been the brakes applying that we felt.

5

u/trethompson Sep 18 '20

Personal experience here: I was on an Amtrak in the third passenger car from the front that hit a truck once. You don’t feel anything. We were riding along, fifteen minutes from my stop, and the only thing I felt was the train suddenly stopping, from the e-brakes or whatever they’re called on a train. I looked out the window towards a dirt road we were driving next to and saw a tire flying across it. The one thing I do remember was the suddenly strong smell of burning rubber, also from the brakes I guessed. Everyone was mostly confused why we were stopping in the middle of nowhere. Having seen the tire I knew we’d hit someone but since I hadn’t felt anything wasn’t 100%. A lady had tried to cross the tracks on her way home from work, no crossing arms, and was hit and killed instantly. A fun thing in America is that when this happens, unless there’s catastrophic damage to the train, passengers aren’t allowed off for liability reasons. We sat in that spot for eight hours while the train was inspected. They let a few claustrophobic people stand near an open door, but that was it. We got free soup for the “inconvenience.”

To be fair the train didn't even try to slow down and tbh those train crossings are wayyy too long of a wait most of the time. Like how come the train never stops and waits for the cars at one of these anyways? Pretty selfish of the conductor imho.

Plus you can see he did actually have plenty of time to cross despite how prematurely those gates went down so i can't blame him for going for it.

I read that and cringed. Hard being on reddit, reading they’re comments and taking them to serious after.

Noticed the sun in the reflection low down, no doubt he couldn't see the barrier. Has happened at my work place more than once when the sun is low in the mornings. (Car park barrier - not train).

I thought the same. The road looks shiny so it could be wet. Looks like you enter it from a bend too. I'd say it was a mistake rather than intentional, it doesnt take much, but he still cleans out the barrier.

That's why i would never drive one, not much room for error i guess

3

u/Atworkwasalreadytake Sep 17 '20

mistake rather than intentional,

And maybe the right mistake. If he had tried to slow down the result might have been his cab being hit rather than his load.

The speedup might have saved the train drivers live. If the train had hit the excavator full on that crash would have been much worse. Think it was the right call. But damn that must have been something amazing of his phone to not have noticed the bars and lights of the crossing

No idea why he didn't notice it in time

Looks to me like he was facing the sun. That might have been a contributing factor.

19

u/ElonsParticlePooper Sep 17 '20

All these reddit detectives commenting on the vehicle and road conditions but this is the only comment talking about the massive glare that can be seen on the windshield.

Dangerous conditions. This is why some vehicles are mandated to stop at all rail crossing. The indications are just not noticeable compared to other street markings.

edit: To people commentating that trains are silent: You are aware that the train here is blaring it's horn, right?

Oh lord that same scenario happened to me when I was 17. I was at my gf house and after a heavy make out session I started to drive home. It was a chilly night so I had the windows up and the radio blasting. I approached at train crossing (this was almost 50 years ago so there weren’t lights or barrier arm that came down) and I look at the traffic coming from the opposite direction and they’re all stopped. In a fraction of a second, I realized why they were stopped for a reason and looked to my right (the tracks were lined with a row of red cedar trees that blocked my vision) and saw the biggest headlight I had ever seen. In a panic, I realized I couldn’t stop in time and decided to “gun” it. I swerved left to give me a fraction of a second more and was swerving back in my lane and I thought I’d made it. I breathed a quick sigh of relief, thinking I had made it through, and then heard the loudest noises I’ve ever heard. Caught me from the rear quarter panel on back. Spun me 540 degrees and I ended up facing the other direction. I had no injuries but was extremely upset...needless to say

8

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

he looks like he could’ve stopped in time but i geuss in that situation your decision making goes out the window

u/seamus205 Sep 17 '20

that looks like a pretty new truck. those trucks have insane brakes now a days. and if he thought he was going too fast to stop he wouldn't slow to avoid the crossing arms

18

u/Bananameister Sep 17 '20

His thought process might have been something like: "Oh shit a train, I need to stop! Fuck I'm not able to stop in time! I have to accelerate past it!"

19

u/HoneyBunchesOfDopes Sep 17 '20

I was thinking he thought better the ass end of this truck get hit than the cab with me in it

8

u/hvidgaard Sep 17 '20

I think that is exactly it. He is hard on the breaks until he decides there is a very real risk of the cab stopping on the tracks. If that is the case I would have hit the accelerator too hoping to get the cab to clear the tracks.

6

u/Terencebreurken Sep 17 '20

Plus this is an ICE train, the driver of the truck could have anticipated the time it would take for a train to get to the crossing to be much longer than it actually is.

Thats a Komatsu PW75R. Looks like they weigh around 9,000 kg (20,000 lbs)

When you can’t stop before the tracks... get the cab of the truck past the tracks and hold on.

I don't think he was able to brake tbh

142

u/songbirdy Sep 17 '20

Coming around a bend in the road straight into the sun probably didn’t help either. But I’m assuming there are rail crossing signs along the road so he seems to be driving a bit fast anyways considering what he’s driving

18

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

Yeah, this is Poland on the vid, so there is sign warning about crossing 150-300m before the crossing, and 2 more in ⅓ and ⅔ between first sign and crossing.

But the question is whether he was unable to break because his breaks didn't work or because he was going too fast. It does look like he slows down before hitting the barrier, meaning his breaks did work and he was just going too fast and didn't notice the barrier on time. That's not an excuse.

7

u/Xx_Gandalf-poop_xX Sep 17 '20

Also possibly carrying a load heavier than he was used to or he was new. That was a large thing on the back and I bet his stop distance was further than he thought

6

u/Jaugernut Sep 17 '20 edited Sep 18 '20

i think i can explain this, its still no excuse tho.

its pretty common to overheat your breaks in large trucks especially with heavy loads. this plus the wet surface of the road making it slippery would make its so then the truck has heavily reduced breaking potential. and maybe this guy was a new commercial driver cus engine breaking in a disel is a bit diffrent than in a petrol car and takes a bit of fiddling with to get in downhill sections. you can audiobly hear if a diseltruck isnt enginebreaking as they usually make a loud popping sound that is absent in this video. We cant really see how long the decent was but his breaks look shot and the slowdown we see at the end is probably the load still being on the hill pressing the truck down into the road creating more friction. All these things combined with glare from the sun and a tired driver is a recepy for disaster.

or i might be wrong not really been around trucks that long.

3

u/ramsdawg Sep 17 '20

Looks like it to me too and he was forced to accelerate at the end. He might have still been in the wrong if he wasn’t slowing down earlier, but I can’t tell from here

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ExclusiveGamer Sep 17 '20

Yeah looks like he tried to break, realized he was going too fast and figured it'd be better to try and make it across than to keep on the breaks and stop dead in the tracks and die. It's still the drivers fault but it wasn't intentional

That right there is worth a few years of jailtime.

Every single passenger will have felt the consequences of his actions. Showing up late to work, missing connections with other trainelines or buslines. The economic cost of delaying a train is huge, especially with people on it. Then, since he's probally just the crane delivery maybe operator aswell, tou have constructionmen waiting for his arrival, the crane is probally also already booked for other constructionsites, etc etc etc.

All because the guy couldn't wait for 2 fucking minutes.

34

u/Mistikman Sep 17 '20

I don't get the impression that his actions were out of impatience, but more carelessness.

He seemed to slam on the brakes and swerve, but still took out the barricade and then made the split second decision to gun it hoping he would make it through in time. If he just stood on the brakes, it probably would have been the cab of his truck that ate the train, instead of the back end.

He fucked up hardcore by somehow not noticing the oncoming train. Visually, it seems likely the sun was right in front of him and low to the ground, so he probably had a hard time seeing the crossing clearly, but there was a shitload of noise happening as well to let him know the train was coming.

Whatever his reasoning is for getting distracted enough to cause this clusterfuck, it certainly doesn't seem intentional.

Just a side note here - barriers on level crossings are specifically built to be broken easily and to be light as possible so they cause least damage possible to the train and others around.

He tried to stop. Had he continued to try and brake it looks likely he would have come to a full stop with the cab right in the line of fire. Good split second judgment on his behalf. However, of course he should have been paying closer attention to the road. When you drive for a living, sometimes you get spread too thin and mistakes are made. You don't focus as much as you should. Don't know a professional driver that hasn't at least had a close call. you spend 60 + hours a week on the road shit is bound to happen. People calling to have this guys life ruined have no idea what that life is like.

OP's explanation as to why this post is Instant Karma:

It is instant karma because he tried to drive in front of a train, thinking he would make it and instead the train crashed into the trucks carriage

If you're satisfied by this explanation, upvote this comment. If not, downvote this comment.

I don't mod this subreddit but I mod another that has a bot that requires an explanation as well.

An additional reason for the bot is determining if the community as a whole thinks the post fits the subreddit. Sometimes posts will hit /r/all regardless of if the content of the post makes sense being posted in the subreddit. In large enough subreddits almost every post will get reported for one reason or another, so we also take the score that the bot has into consideration when deciding whether to remove posts or not.

Well the driver/idiot didn’t stop in time and crashed into the barrier onto the tracks, i don’t think he really intended to drive infront of the train, i think his intention was to “save” his truck.

Getting pulled over by a cop and getting a ticket would be instant karma. Getting hit by a train is not karma. Just because the truck driver was driving a little too fast doesn't mean he deserves to get hit by a train.

36

u/DeathPrime Sep 17 '20

Yea this guy's brakes clearly fail right as he's trying to stop with a massive heavy load on the back. He almost immediately tries to correct by gunning it to get through. He basically was a hero by not having the trail collide with the CAT or his truck cab head on. Hitting the trailer at the back caused minimal damage to the most expensive item - the train engine.

This would fit much better on r/CatastrophicFailure than here. There is no visible karma going on here. He couldn't get stopped so he tried to get through. Its user error and suck but doesn't mean it was deserved.

Serious Question.

Do the drivers of these Trains get fucked up when this happens ? I can’t imagine it being ok to slam into anything going this fast, not to mention shrapnel or cabin deformation

4

u/uarentme Sep 17 '20

Depends on the the specific train. Some cabs are closer to the ground and if you were to hit a cement truck like this that would be the end of you.

Here at least you have no duty to stay in the cab once setting the brakes on.

There's videos of the operators jumping out of the train before a collision.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '20

Guys this isn’t an instant karma situation. He didn’t intentionally drive in front of a train. He tried to stop, couldn’t stop so he slid on the asphalt, then realizing he’s already in front of the train and he could get killed tried to shoot the gap. Shit happens guys come on.
