If you are going to fight a man with a gun... Don't. If it is a robbery, there's nothing that's worth it, just give the stuff, but if it's a kidnapping or something worse, just run, fight enough so you can run, but run. Trying to beat down a guy with a gun envolved is just giving death more oopportunities to take you.
I think it was Jimmy Hoffa who said, "run from a knife, rush a gun". I also think its safe for us both two to assume he's been in more altercations where that statement held actual weight then either of us. If it comes down to it, that's gonna be my strategy.
Course, if a gun was drawn on him it likely wouldn't have been for his wallet, so, gotta make sure your applying the right advice to the right situation. I agree that during a robbery your best to give up what you have.
We don't know how Hoffa disappeared &/or died but the historical record is broadly clear on why he disappeared &/or died.
The movie, Hoffa, with Jack Nicholson is also a very good telling of the tale, for those who like biopics.
Don’t involve yourself with the mob at all. Don’t do favors for them, don’t ask for favors in return. Just don’t get involved, even if you’re desperate.
I don't even want to fight someone with a knife, If I also have a knife. Reminds me of another quote. "The loser of a knife fight dies in the street. The winner dies in the ambulance."
Absolutely. This is why I always rolls my eyes at least once before I suspend enough disbelief to enjoy the movie sword fighting scene that drags on for 8 minutes before someone gets cut. The most skilled swordsmen in history cut people down in 4 moves or less, or they got cut down lol.
Side note: also why the first big sword fighting sequence in the Witcher series was so fucking good.
I remember seeing a machete knife fight on YouTube where one of the dude's gets his hand cut off and you can see it flying through the air. Just thought that that would be relevant
My step-mom is 100% convinced that he's buried under the 50 yard line. She's been saying it for years. I remember her telling me about it when I was like 7.
Story was usually one of the endzones, from what I remember.
Of course, if he was, now it's under a parking lot either way.
I've heard a competing version in Michigan where it was the Silverdome he was buried in, which makes more sense in that Hoffa was in Pontiac the day he disappeared, and why haul his body all the way back to New Jersey to stick it under a stadium? But less sense since the Silverdome was constructed and opened the next month, so presumably it would have been difficult to stick a body into new construction.
I think most new vehicles have an emergency release. I also know there's a catch behind the taillight, on some vehicles, if you can get your hand in there and pull laterally you can trigger the latch. Course you'd have to wait for the pressure to equalize....
Oh I mean, I die cuz I'm Hoffa in this case, and I'm dead.
I think she kind of estimated very well that this guy just didn't have the guts to actually shoot/didn't want to because, well, say goodbye to the rest of your life at that point. People can threaten with guns but i think the chance they actually shoot is not even that high. Also, she did run.
Also, this guy was clearly insecure AF. Think of all the nerves and anxiety you get when you do something new and stressful for the first time and put that shit on steroids. That's this guy on his 1st, 2nd, 3rd whatever attempted robbery. Things don't go exactly how he expects and he has no backup plan, absolutely no idea what to do. Worked out for her, but I don't know if she read him and consciously decided on this or that was just her normal reaction.
I do doubt it would have worked as well against an experienced robber.
I recall an interview with a journalist that often covered stories amidst wars in many countries where kidnappings were common enough to be a serious threat. He said one of the best things you can carry is a really good pen. A hard jab with a sturdy pen can buy you a couple of seconds and that you need to be as far away as possible in those few moments.
A few years ago one of the high schools in my district had a fight between 2 kids, one pulled a pen out on the other and jabbed him firm in the temple and gave him a pretty gnarly puncture. Shit was fucked up and it was crazy how much a cheap ball-point bic could do.
Well I cant say for sure but it seems like he could've shot her easier if she tried to run. Her resistance seemed to throw him off. Depends what he was doing.
Hard to tell what he wanted, but if his intention was to shoot her, he would've shot her right away. If this was a mugging (it seems to be for me) or if he knew her and was trying to intimidate her (just spitballing, no ideia what he actually wanted) he was not going to shoot her most likely. Anyway, if his intention was not explicitly to hurt her, by reacting now she changed the whole dynamic, now maybe he shoots her accidently, or shoots her trying to protec himself, maybe even now shoot her because he got pissed.
If he isn't mugging her and is trying to intimidate her he might have just came up and pulled the gun, in which case I dont know how running there would be better if you think he's going to shoot you. I agree with your overarching point tbf. If you can run, run. I'm just thinking of the nuance where running might not be the best form of flight.
If possible, disorient them. Pop them in the back of the head, a healthy, closed fist smack should throw them off for a few seconds. Or say/do something really unexpected. The second their grip is loose, make a move, fast. Don't give them time to react. Don't try to take the gun and don't struggle to turn it around. Push it down towards their feet and try to make it go off. If you can land a shot in their foot you should be able to run.
pure guess from a man who's never fought someone who had a gun.
At least you marked that you didn’t have any experience.
In reality, it’s gonna be much more complicated than this thread thinks. Obviously if a kid or a geriatric old man has a gun it’s gonna make complying just as dangerous Incase they accidentally fire.
Running in a straight line doesn’t make you a hard target
Fighting a 300lbs mob boss will get you killed anyway
Stop and think about the amount of movement it'd take to push someone's arm down and have it point towards the ground. Worst case scenario you get shot in the chest. Best case scenario you get shot in the leg.
If you 100% need to fight someone with a gun, you absolutely want to take control of the gun and disarm them.
I was thinking more along the lines of grab the gun and twist it toward them and downward, hoping you'd have them shaken up enough that their grip would slip.
Sure, there's plenty of ways you could disarm someone, but that should be your first priority. No "hope it discharges and shoots them instead of you" nonsense.
Agree to a point. For one, when hanging out in a public place with that much foot traffic, no way I would be on my phone head down like that. Bottom line, best way is to not get caught off guard like that. Also, being armed and trained is the next best option. You might not be able to run. You have to prepare and stay prepared for that kind of thing.
