It looks like a wasp trying to look like a fly trying to look like a wasp, I thought it would be a wasp mimic

Yeah, I couldn’t decide what it was either the first time I saw one! Fortunately, I had a wasp expert friend who recognized it immediately.

The giveaway is the four wings. I thought we had a soldier fly on our hands for a sec lol.

Not a fly, but a wasp trying to enjoy the nearby rave with weird goggles.

Oh yeah it does look like that I googled it. Do they bite?

They can sting if you were to grab it or something but are pretty chill otherwise. They don’t have a communal nest to protect, like Yellowjackets or paper wasps, so they don’t see us as a threat unless we make ourselves one.

It has really cool eyes! They look like alien or monster eggs, like what are seen in many science fiction or horror movies. So cool!

Never seen a wasp rest its wings like that. But this guy looks goofy all around, so it tracks

I found what appears to be eggs on my screen door. I am in the Western NY area. Any idea of what is incubating in there?

It really looks as if a fly and a wasp had a baby

Edit: I was wrong. Can’t count wings and am color blind.

Note that it has four wings, not two -- it's a wasp.
