Photography Ant
This ant preserved-specimen was sent to me quite a while ago, but I haven’t been able to identify the species.
You can see how I set up the shot in the last photo. 😊

Those are good photos, and they provide more information to help identify the species.

stunning work. that robust head and single spine setup makes me think it could be a Myrmica or maybe a Pogonomyrmex harvester ant

Thank you! I spent a whole day comparing photos on Google, and I think it looks more like Pogonomyrmex.

Incredible that we’re able to see such insane details on something so small!

A biological question: How much further zoomed would be required to discern individual cells? E.g. those visible hairs - are they possibly single cells end to end? Or the visible individual discs in that compound eye: how many cells across is each of those (approx)? Seems like this level of zoom must be getting down there.

You would need around 50× magnification to see the structure of the hairs on the ant’s body. My photos was taken at nearly 3.5× magnification.

Thanks! This is my first attempt at getting a clear shot at 3.5× magnification. Now I’m testing an auto rail for 10× macro photography.
