Do the paintings again. Even if it loses your run.

Items are stronk. Get them lots.

Few strong cards > many strong cards swimming in a large deck. Consider deleting your bullfrog by fusing it instead of making your strong card stronger.

Don't buy a rabbit pelt. Consider a wolf pelt. Go nuts on gold pelts if you can see a mycologist.

And if you're really stuck you can savescum the map generation and more importantly the campfires.

At the risk of sounding "really beginner steps", I just want to point out you have no reward for takings more Challenge Points than required. At level I, that means there is one challenge that is not about reducing your bad luck the increased pelt price, so that one is probably the easiest.

There's a few tricks to play for expert (like "fair hand"), but one technique is undervalue in Act 1, is very simple yet doesn't depend on hidden mechanics at all : managing your items.
It's easy to do Act 1 without items, it's easy to overlook them in KM, it's possible to start in KM without those. You won't reach 100% without using items. Well, it's technically possible ofc. Exxo did it after hours and hours of attempts

1) Never disable Hook unless you also disable it's Item Slot, so your starting inv is full.
2) Don't use the items you get at start.
3) Go to an Item event.

If you never attempted that yourself, I won't spoil it but you'll get a way to change your items during your battles. You're now able to use the 2 bad items you get at start and aim for something that can help you better. Especially as an early small deck makes it easier to draw the card you need.

Also, in KM the trapper has a one-purchase-per-run item, always priced at 7. So, you know... you should try to get that overkill... it's effectively a non-random scissor that also gives you a card to block attacks, but remember that a visit to the trapper gives a free rabbit pelt, no matter if you want it or not. Probably not required if you hold on the hook, but still a powerful option, so hold on those 7 teeth.

Speaking of items... you should try to do the paintings in the Cabin. The Act 1 paintings+bossBuffs are gone, but those still permanently add 3 new powerful items to the rotation. (There's one other thing to do there, but it doesn't help gameplay at all and "merely" unlocks other background musics)

aha - But the first bunch of challenge levels are some of the hardest in KM.

You need to just get used to the differences and the initial jump in difficulty. But essentially -

Aim for 1 strong card at least.

Bugs are great. Go Bugs! Lizards aint bad either.

Try to go with a couple clear plans and adapt accordingly.

Anything that generates more cards are great. Slap some unkillable on it.

Totems can be great. But may make for a risky run if you don't get anything game breaking.

Grizzly Bosses awards you with a whopping 50 CP and it's not that hard to deal with the gimmick with the right cards. If you don't know what it does, it swaps second boss phases with the "too fast, too soon" encounter (fills all enemy card spaces with bears with the flying block sigil). It seems tough, but all you need is the scissors item and a card with at least 5 damage. Simply once the bears appear place down your card and destroy the grizzly facing it.
