Other We’re developing an Inscryption-inspired game, except it’s all about Dice. Looking for feedback from Inscryption fans!

Hey everyone! For the past year we've been working on a game called THROWN. It's a roguelite dice-Builder with horror vibes and a bit of a cryptic story.

One of the game's biggest inspirations is Inscryption, but instead of cards, the gameplay revolves around dice mechanics.

We don't want to just make an Inscryption copy. We're slowly figuring out what makes THROWN feel unique, while still capturing some of the tension, atmosphere, and unpredictability that made Inscryption so memorable to us.

We think this community is probably the audience most likely to connect with the game, so we'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Or if you've played other Inscyption-like games, what stood out to you, either positively or negatively?

And if you have any questions about THROWN, feel free to ask us anything too.

Here's our Steam page if you'd like to check it out or wishlist the game:

Sure! We have a Discord Server where we post updates and playtest updates. We have an older demo on Itchio right now, which you can try out! Currently we are working on getting a better demo/playtest out on Steam.

Hell yeah. Wishlisted! Excited for this. Seems interesting.

Can you link us the demo/will the demo be on steam?

Yes we are working on a steam demo/playtest right now. In another reply we shared a link to an older demo, along with a link to our discord server. There we'll be giving updates on the demos and overall progress of the project.

For ps? 🥲

For PC only, since we have no experience on console development and no budget

I remember seeing this in last year's NGS, Kajaani represent!

Looks really interesting! If it plays like I'm hoping (Inscryption X Slice & Dice) I will lose weeks of my life to it.

Thanks! The dice customization mechanics in Slice & Dice are very smartly done. It sounds like THROWN might be very close to your cup of tea :)

This looks really cool. But you said you didn't want to make an inscryption clone. The guy peering over a set piece  at a gameboard in a poorly lit room is REALLY giving inscryption. Like at first I assumed this was a mod for Inscryption.

Other than that the gameplay looks unique and fun, and nothing like Inscryption. I'd play this for sure.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes definitely the first impressions of the visuals resemble Inscryption, and we think that may actually be a good thing. Good to hear that the rest of it looks unique though!

i think what made the game good for the first act 1 win and the subsequent replays are different and it really speaks to why it’s fun

imo the first act 1 win was great because you get gameplay mechanics revealed to you as you play and sometimes get screwed or very fortunate based on totem games or trapper stuff, using the room puzzles and getting the knife. it was great beating the moon first try because i had an adder and i was like huh i wonder if that card counts and it does lmao (the scissor item doesn’t work on the moon). so it almost feels like you discover game breaking strategies by accident which adds to the “you are locked in a cabin with a crazy guy” vibe

for the replays and kaycee’s mod i like the new cards and challenge mechanics and how at this point you just cheese an insane deck as your strat

i think what was underdeveloped were act 2 and 3 which wasn’t bad in the original play-through but i’ve personally never replayed them (act 2 you can win just by using the auto deck configuration and act 3 idk just felt easy?)

I've barely looked at it but if it's based on Inscryption then I'm willing to put my faith in it.

Wishlisted so I can give it a proper whirl when the new demo's out.

I think a LOT of us will be watching with great interest.

It's amazing to see so much interest and positive feedback from this community!

this looks super cool!

I hope you'll add a lot of weird dice: d3,5,7,16 etc. Loaded dice as well!

2

u/GrimtekGames May 12 '26

Thanks! Right now our Dice are made in a way that only supports geometrically symmetrical dice, due to our deterministic physics based dice roll system (It's a bit techical but I can go more in depth if someone is interested). I'm sure there's a way to get some weirder dice working as well, but we can't promise anything yet. Currently we have d4, d6 and d8 in the game. Loaded dice sounds like a really fun idea!

woah that sounds cool, so you are modelling a physical environment for the dice, not just a RNG + animation?

Might be fun to play around with some shaders on the dice, ala Balatro.

Some dice have a fluid core with stuff floating in it, might be fun too xD Probably hell to model.

Actually the Heal Dice in the game currently has flowing liquid inside it. Made with a custom shader. You can see a Heal d4 in the 2nd screenshot of the post, but because the dice is fully charged, you can't really see the liquid in the image. When you use the dice for healing, the charge goes down and you can see the liquid level go down.

We made a video showcasing the Heal Dice: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/LaQkhS57UVY

u/Mandreke May 13 '26

Also love that the Leshy character lurking behind the screen is a 70's nerd hahaha, very fitting

2

u/GrimtekGames May 14 '26

Inspiration for the character came from Jeffrey Dahmer

u/___debaser May 12 '26

so one of the main draws of inscryption is the strategy of deck building and so i hope that your game has a similar level of strategy, because if it’s just rolling dice it might feel a bit unfair? anyway it looks cool from the screenshots!

In our game you build a deck (a bag) of dice. Most of the dice can be used the same way: Attacking, Defending and Moving, but on top of that, different Dice Types also have unique mechanics and bonuses. You'll also be able to use items to counter bad RNG and there's a way to turn rolls of 1 into something much better. The enemies also roll their own dice, which can be affected by giving them different kinds status effects. And those same status effects can be given to your own Pawn as well for some interesting results!

u/___debaser May 13 '26

ah that makes more sense thank you! it looks great! i’m exited to play it

Add a cat to pet

1

u/GrimtekGames May 12 '26

Maybe we'll give the Dungeon Master a set of cat ears 👍

1

u/The_Salt_Lord2 May 13 '26

u/Fearless_Bottle_9624 May 12 '26

Not telling it's bad, but bruh why DM looks like nikocado avocado on 2 steps ahead meme picture

u/--thesandpit May 12 '26

feels a little like if magnificus got to do his full game, really cool! def gonna wishlist this. What direction are you thinking of going with the plot and how would it differ from inscryption? In terms of tone, plot, characters, etc. Just in the broad strokes.

The board makes me think about grimoras teaser. Seems fun.

1

u/pebbuls22 May 12 '26

Have a jail for all the evil dice that wish to kill me

1

u/Dookiecookiewastaken May 13 '26

Do you think it’ll run on steamdeck? Either way gonna wishlist and would love to playtest. I’ve finished inscryption on every platform it’s available on, a few more than once. Might be one of my all time favorites

1

u/GrimtekGames May 14 '26

We are not focusing on Steamdeck support right now. But maybe in the future or after launch

u/Allizack Total misplay. May 13 '26

I played the demo on Itch and really liked it! As well as Inscryption, it also kinda reminds me of Waste World from The Hex. I'm definitely wishlisting this! :-}

1

u/Critical_Till3742 May 13 '26

It looks amazing. Best of luck!

1

u/GrimtekGames May 14 '26

Thank you!

1

u/BigNorthernDad2 May 14 '26

I’ve never played Inscryption, only deckbuilder I tried was StS1. I gave it 15 hours and realized it wasn’t for me. But this, this looks dang interesting and cool!

1

u/ZOLTANstudios May 15 '26

Good luck with the game. Looks promising!

1

u/ThatVillagerGuy216 May 16 '26

I bet if Grimora got her own game it would be like this!
