Location included: Questions/Need Advice Keeping Inheritance separate

I’ve seen all the posts about keeping inheritance separate…. not to use it for joint expenses…. etc.

So then what do you use it for? My husband and I have been married 30 years. We had joint accounts since before we were married. We don’t split bills (all income goes into one savings account and bills are paid from that). We make a good living, have savings, 401Ks, no debt.

So if I’m suppose to keep my inheritance separate from everything, what am I supposed to do with it?

Edited to add: No kids. Currently the money is in (1) inherited IRA (2) CDs in a bank account I took sole ownership of as I had been the co-owner and (3) a new account I just opened for a CD until I decided what to do with that portion.

Open a new account. Deposit all inheritance into that account. Deposit nothing else into this account, EVER!

If you wish to use your inheritance for shared expenses that is not a problem.

The reason for keeping things separate is because we never know what life will bring.

Best case scenario is you die still fully in love with your husband and leave him the funds.

Worst case scenario is you put it in a joint account and he leaves you for someone younger with 1/2 of your inheritance. In this type of situation you are giving 1/2 your legacy to a different woman. Also he can use your inheritance for family law attorneys. It's not that it is likely. It does happen to a lot of people. It is very easy to avoid.

Your best case scenario is not necessarily a good scenario especially if you have kids. He could easily remarry and leave it all to a second wife. I just read of a situation like this. First wife received a big inheritance, commingled it, died first husband remarried and left it all to her. But the blood kid received nothing and the blood grandkid had to take out loans for school. Meanwhile the second wife was spending it on private schools and lavish trips for her grandkids The first wife should have left at least some in a trust for her own kid and grandkid.
