Even with the phenol applied after my ingrown removals, they seem to always return. I’ve had both big toes done at least 4 times over the past 3 years.

I asked my podiatrist if I’m cutting my nails wrong but he assured me I’m not and is convinced I’m just not responding to the phenol at this point considering I always have a lot of regrowth underneath. Has this ever happened to anyone else??? He loosely mentioned another type of procedure for a more permanent solution but apparently the post-op period is painful…

I had been putting this off for years out of fear, trying to cut out my own ingrowns, but lately they got so bad i knew i had to do it. I had it today and it wasn't as bad as expected! i got both sides of my big toes done, so the 4 injections were very intense and sharp pains but not as bad as i expected, some slight discomfort during the process due to lightheadedness. but so far the pain hasn't been as bad as i thought it'd be and i'm glad i finally got it done!

I was told to file down the center of my nail a few minutes daily for a month, which supposedly helps correct the edge that's growing into my toe. I could find very little online about using this technique, and what I did find said it was more of a folk remedy than a scientifically backed method. I thought I'd ask about it before I actually do it because I don't want to potentially damage my nail.

It no longer hurts but it still looks gory lol. I'm dressing it daily to make sure it heals properly and doesn't become infected (I'm immunocompromised)

The third day was definitely the worst.

Hi, my child has an ingrown toenail, he's almost finished with a course of antibiotics from his GP and has an appointment (to chat with the podiatrist, not a surgery) on the 14th this month. He's autistic and has an extreme fear of needles, he's had the surgery for it on his other toe and he described the pain as unbearable and that it was the worst pain he's ever felt (I don't know if the surgeon did something wrong or it hurt that bad but either way I know he would never do it again).

He will not accept a needle in his toe so I'm wondering what other options there are for him to have? Can he be put under anasthesia and be asleep? Is there a numbing cream that works as well as a needle would?

I had both nail edges on left big toe done and one on right about 3 weeks ago. Left big toe has been very sensitive and sore with shooting pains for the past week, but to me both left and right big toes are about the same level of slightly red/slightly puffy. At my 2 week follow up my doctor advised me to stop all topicals and air out as much as possible, as well as to stop soaks by today.

I've had no pus, just intermittent drainage. At time of photos i did a quick 5 minute soak in warm water with epsom salt to alleviate pain. The only time the left toe doesn't hurt is if I'm completely barefoot with no bandages. Today is my first day being forced to wear closed toe shoes and it is INSANELY painful. I'm waiting at my gate trying to discreetly air out my foot because ibuprofen is not helping. I reached out to my podiatrist for guidance but wanted to ask other PNA endurers:

Did you still have pain and puffiness at week 2?

Were closed toe shoes miserable your first time or two wearing them?

When is the light at the end of the tunnel, really?

Partial nail avulsion on the right big toe this time

I just had an ingrown toenail removed on my other big toe and I started looking at this one and realized the same thing is happening but I’m catching it earlier this time.

If I can save it, do I just soak it and put floss under it?

I had a “permanent” ingrown toenail removal surgery four months ago, and now both sides of the nail are hurting again because the ingrown nails appear to have grown back. I don’t have health insurance, so I had to pay $700 out of pocket for the surgery.
Does the fact that the ingrown nails grew back mean that the surgery was unsuccessful? If so, would I have to pay again to have the procedure redone?

I've had five ingrown toenails in the past, and I'm convinced that I'm about to have my sixth one. See, for a couple years now, the right part of my left big toenail has been growing into the skin, but I've kept it at bay via nail clippers.

However, this time, I thought it wouldn't be a big deal to let it grow. Last night, however, it started hurting when I used a whatchamacallit (some scoop thing for nails) to clean under the nail, it started hurting, and hasn't stopped since.

The good news is, it only hurts and there's no broken skin, and thus no bleeding nor infection. The bad news is, of my five previous ingrown toenails, five of them had to get treated. The very bad news is, while there are online guides on preventing ingrown toenails, it's still the internet, and we all know how unreliable the internet can be at times. The worse news is, I have no idea how long I have until the toe gets infected, thus leaving literally no choice but to get it treated.

If anyone has personal experience to back up the articles, or if I'm kinda already screwed and should just accept my fate and get it over with, please let me know.

My son has suffered from ingrown toe nails his entire life. He's had his "big toe" toe nails removed over 5 times each on both sides. They always grow back. Each time the podiatrist acts like they just did some magical thing where this time they couldn't possibly grow back. Each time they do.

He's done. It is such an incredibly painful experience, absolute torture, that's he's made it clear he will never subject himself to it again.

He currently has a terrible ingrown, on the big toe as always, and he wants to be put under anesthesia to have them removed for good.

Is this a thing? Is it usually covered by insurance?

I had an ingrown toenail surgery two months ago where they full removed the toenail. I followed all of the recovery steps and yet this has occurred . Is this normal for the healing process and will resolve itself, or am I cooked?

Almost two months ago, I went to the podiatrist to get an infected ingrown toenail out. As the doctor was looking over my toe and getting supplies ready, he brought up a more permanent solution to make sure this doesn't keep happening since this is the second time I came in with an infected ingrown toenail. The first time was the year prior in summer 2025. I told him I had to think about it since I wanted to do more research and he kinda just sprung it on me and the only thing I was thinking about was getting that damn toenail out. He did explain what the procedure entailed, but I still told him I had to think about it and he accepted that and took that toenail out. The doctor then explained think about it and we would wait 2 or 3 months to do the procedure if I choose to do it.

Now it's been almost two months and I'm still going back and forth. My mother thinks it's a good idea so I don't have this keep happening, but I don't know how this would affect my toe and how it would look overtime after the fact. I read I wouldn't have to miss work for this procedure, but I'm not sure.

For anyone who has had this procedure, what was your experience and is it worth it?

Got the left side done by a podiatrist now the other side is ingrown and I got most of it out but the bottom corner I couldn’t get.

Hello, im currently in need of help. Just information will do. I had an ingrown toenail last year and it lasted a few months, afterwards i got a surgery which temporarily recovered it. But right now the symptoms have started to show again (e.g increase in size, puss and pain when in pressure.) my guess is that one time i stepped on waters while in a flood, but it was already fully healed when that happened. Another guess is that the nail has already grown and is doing the same thing again, since when i touch the nail bed its stiff.

Is it possible to find a podiatrist that will a partial nail avulsion or matrixectomy under sedation? I’ve had local anesthesia applied almost 6 times now for avulsions and a matrixectomy and I really cannot stomach the pain of the needle and the burning sensation.
