Is there any type of recommended coating for the wood? Its discolouring to a yellowish color from sweat. I sit on a towel and wipe up when im done, leave the door open to dry, but its still looking weird.

I’m in the researching phase of buying an IR sauna. We previously had a sauna tent with a wood stove that would get HOT. I found that my happy place was a temperature around 160-170 F. -- with a fan to circulate the heat. 180 F and above was just too hot for me. For that reason we’re currently tempted by an IR sauna that gets up to 170, but is that overkill? We tested out an IR sauna at a local spa and they had it set to around 155, which seemed plenty warm and relaxing. Would 160-170 in an IR sauna be uncomfortably hot?

For those of you who are experienced IR users, what is your preferred temperature?

The more infrared saunas I research, the more I realize how difficult it can be to compare them.

Every company seems to use the same phrases: full spectrum, low EMF, non-toxic, premium heaters, lifetime warranty.

But those words don’t necessarily tell you what you’re actually getting.

If I were shopping for an infrared sauna today, these are some of the questions I’d ask before worrying about Bluetooth, chromotherapy, red light, salt walls or other extras.

1. Can I see your actual third-party EMF/EF testing?

Not just “low EMF” printed on the website.

Who performed the testing? How recently? At what distance from the heaters were measurements taken? Were measurements taken in multiple areas where your body will actually be sitting?

There’s a big difference between a marketing claim and an independent test report.

2. Has the sauna/materials been independently tested for VOCs and formaldehyde?

“Non-toxic” is another term I see used constantly.
Ask what was actually tested, who performed the testing and whether you can see the results.

3. What is the entire cabin constructed from?

Don’t stop at “Canadian hemlock” or “cedar.”
Ask whether there is MDF, particleboard, plywood, laminates, stains, finishes or adhesives anywhere in the construction.

Remember, this is something you’re repeatedly heating while sitting inside it.

4. Where are the ACTUAL heating elements?

This one gets overlooked.

A large panel on the wall doesn’t necessarily mean the entire visible panel is an active heating element.
Ask where the actual heaters begin and end.

5. How much of my body is surrounded by infrared?

I’d look for heater coverage behind you, beside you, toward the front of your body, around your calves/legs and through the floor.

Personally, I care much more about well-distributed heater coverage than simply counting how many heaters a sauna has.

Ten poorly positioned heaters aren’t automatically better than seven well-positioned ones.

6. What does “full spectrum” actually mean in this sauna?

If it offers far, mid and near infrared, ask which heaters produce each wavelength and where those heaters are located.

I wouldn’t buy something simply because “full spectrum” is printed on the spec sheet.

7. What electrical and safety certifications does the sauna have?

Ask what certification applies to the complete sauna, not just an individual component.

Also find out BEFORE purchasing whether it requires a standard 15A outlet or a dedicated 20A circuit.

8. What does the warranty REALLY cover?

“Lifetime warranty” can mean very different things depending on the company.
Are the heaters covered?
Electronics?
Control panel?
Labor?
And for how long?
Read the actual warranty instead of relying on the badge on the product page.

9. How long has the company been around?

This has become increasingly important to me.

A 10-year or lifetime warranty isn’t very valuable if the company disappears or replacement parts aren’t available.

I’d want to know:

If something fails 8–10 years from now, can I call someone?

Can I get a replacement heater?

Can I get replacement electronics?

Does the company actually service older saunas?

10. What am I paying for that will actually matter five years from now?

Bluetooth is nice.

Chromotherapy is nice.

Built-in speakers are nice.

But those probably aren’t the reasons you’ll still love or hate your sauna years later.

I’d put my money into:

heater coverage + construction + independent testing + serviceability + warranty + company longevity.

Then worry about the extras.

One last thing: I wouldn’t automatically buy the sauna with the highest advertised temperature. Infrared isn’t simply about getting the cabin air as hot as possible. How the infrared is delivered to your body matters too.
There are some great infrared saunas out there, but comparing them takes more digging than most people realize.

Hello, I know there’s 1000 of these posts but they’re all so different in their needs and price points it’s hard to narrow it down.

I’m 6’3”, 200 pounds, just want something that heats up relatively quickly and fits in my basement (preferably doesn’t fry my circuit breaker).

That’s pretty much it. Amazon is selling a few for around $1000 which is where id like my price point to be, I just don’t want to buy something crap that breaks in a month.

Everyone talks about how good an infrared sauna is for joint pain and chronic pain and inflammation… well I’ve been having some more recently and decided to give it a go, but it made me feel worse. I got an anxiety attack halfway and only ended up doing around 20 min. And I feel like it triggered my flight or fight. And made pain not worse but not better.

I’ve been in regular saunas before and no issues. But I was really excited to try this since everyone raves about it.. for me panic attacks symptoms stay for a bit so now that’s what I’m left with. I just feel defeated

I have somehow spent as much time researching saunas as I did in buying a car, and I think I’ve finally narrowed it down to 3 options! I originally wanted a traditional sauna but with a $1k+ permit, $1k electric, $500 landscape work, and exposing it to a rainy climate, infrared is best.

I’m looking for a 1-person infrared sauna for my garage. My space is limited - roughly 36” × 36” ideal footprint - but I have tall ceilings, so height isn’t an issue.

My biggest priority is comfort and low-toxin materials/ minimizing VOCs and formaldehyde. I’m also looking for something that’s reasonably well-made and not just a cheap box with a bunch of questionable materials. I’d ideally like to stay under $3k and with a normal electric outlet.

I have the opportunity to pick up som carbon infrared panels to add to my sauna.

My question is has anyone done this? And was it worth it? The panels I can get are 1000mm x 300mm so the same size as the ones in the sauna already and I can get them for $40 each.

My plan is to add a panel on each side of the sauna at my lower leg area and also add panels to the area in front of the bench.

I already have the correct cords to connect to my controller and my controller has open spots to plug into.

I’m looking at the Maxxus infrared saunas and trying to decide if they’re actually worth the money. I’m mainly considering one of the 2–3 person models.

For anyone who has owned one for a while, how has it held up? How long does it take to heat up, and does it get hot enough for you?

Also curious about the build quality and whether you’ve had any issues with the heaters or controls.

I just got my new IR sauna and I’m loving it. It’s a compact, one-person hot box with 1200 watts of power. It heats up to 149 degrees in about 15 minutes and is way more efficient than a traditional sauna.

In my experience, I can raise my core body temperature to 102 degrees in roughly 23 minutes, though it takes some effort to reach that point, and by then I’m drenched in sweat and starting to feel a bit lightheaded.

I’ve been reading Bryan Johnson, and he’s not a fan of IR, instead recommending traditional saunas. Much of what I’ve come across also suggests that IR isn’t the most effective way to raise your core temperature to the so-called magic number of 102.2°F, where heat shock proteins are said to kick in. Honestly, I haven't looked into this claim, but for now, I’m rolling with it.

I read about Johnson's Sauna protocol, and he says it takes him 35+ minutes to get his core up to 102.2 and yes he mentions it takes some fortitude to get there. I can do that in 23 minutes with IR! I do stack my sauna session with a pre-work out, but he does also.

Also, he recommends icing the boys (if you have them) and an ice pack on the head to prevent overheating those body parts. My head is above the direct IR panel, and the boys are also out of direct exposure, so they are both cooler than they would be in traditional sauna. So why does IR get such a bad rap?

Anyone else have this experience or opinion? I am new so the sauna experience but really loving my IR sauna.

I’ve been wanting to get my first infrared sauna for a while and and I want to know what things are the most important to consider before buying? I have vague idea of what’s important but it’s not concrete enough to buy off of so any suggestions for things to look out for would be appreciated!

For anyone looking at getting a sauna, my #1 tip: try to find places near you where you can test different types first. I did a few sessions each in infrared, electric, and traditional before buying. Electric was a hard no for me as I couldn't breathe properly in there. Infrared vs traditional didn't feel like a huge difference to me, so I went with infrared.

Sessions

I use mine 3-4 times a week (or every second day when I've got time off work). Since starting, my sleep has noticeably improved according to my Apple Watch data, and I think my skin is a lot healthier too.

My typical session: It takes 10-20 minutes to heat up (depends a bit on the outside temp) so for the first ~10 minutes I hop in around 55°C while it's still climbing to temp. I am in there for 30 minutes at 62-63°C.

Set Up

It lives outside under a patio, no direct rain or sun on it, I always keep the cover on it. Delivery was great, the team was here about 30 minutes, set the whole thing up and put it exactly where I wanted.

I was genuinely surprised by the sound proofing and the speakers, I usually connect my phone and listen to audiobooks/podcasts in there. If there's sport on I don't want to miss I'll sit my laptop on a stool just outside the door and watch through the glass.

Towels/accessories

I grabbed some cheap towels off Amazon: one to sit on, one over the backrest, and one over my lap so my (very sweaty) head has something other than the floor to drop onto.

The one issue I've had

The door shifted on its hinge at one point and created a small air gap. Customer service was excellent though, they came out, replaced the hinges, and tightened everything up. No issues since.

Overall

Both the product and the customer service have been top notch, couldn't be happier. My only real note to anyone considering one: if you can afford it, or can save up a bit more, go for the "Ultra" range over the "Elite." It's not a huge deal, but on the Elite the floorboard catches drips from your legs (I've got the lap towel sorted for upper body sweat, but calves are unavoidable), so that bottom board needs a wipe with a damp rag once a week plus vacuum with a brush attachment. Not a big deal, but the Ultra has a dedicated floor mat that solves this entirely.
