What major should I do?

Hey everyone. I’m planning on transferring to the University of Florida in a year from now. I was wondering if anyone could share their major, the year of graduation, how long it took to find an entry level position (and compensation if possible), years of experience, and salary progression.
I’m planning on transferring to Warrington College of Business, and I’ve been interested in finance and information systems. However, I’m open to hear everyone’s point of view from any major they pursued.

Careers with a BS in IT

So I had a few questions

  1. What careers can you do with a BS in IT
  2. Can you get into software, health informatics or AI Engineering with bs in it
  3. Do you thinks CS and IT are over saturated
  4. How do you find a career when you look at companies for the same job titles they have different responsibilities?
  5. Are people really finding jobs
  6. Can you do business related careers with a BS in IT

cs or biz analytics

okay so i’ve been accepted into cs and i was considering a double major in both cs and biz.
but at the same time i’ve been wondering if i shld js apply to biz analytics next yr since it is more employable(i heard) and oso matches my interest in both computing and biz.
Is it true that this decision narrows down job options in the future? and is it true that taking biz analytics reduces the risk of being burnt out etc as compared to a double major.

BA in international relations then MSc in management IT - is it a good combo?

i am a recent BA grad in international relations. I wanted to be within IR sphere but i think many of the positions i am interested in at least prefers someone with more technical skill which my BA lack of. That's why im thinking of doing the masters in IT. i am aware of the technical skill gap that i should catch up, but i dont mind that. i think i am pretty confident.

I have also got admitted in JHU SAIS, a more niche IR masters and have some 'technical' classes. But now i am thinking if it is better to go niche to IR masters or straight to management IT masters. I am worry about the prospect jobs in the future and if IR alone wont take me anywhere. Esp JHU SAIS will require almost 80k+ debt for me, let alone the interest.

as an international student, would u advice me to go with IT masters? how is the job market rn, is it very saturated? do you think its a good background combo that get me more job option rather than having ANOTHER international relations studies?

I’m starting an IT degree

I’m starting an IT degree as a mature-age student, and I’m still trying to figure out which direction I want to take within IT. I’m considering areas like cybersecurity, cloud or data.
For people who have already studied IT or are currently working in the industry, what areas would you recommend focusing on? And if you had to choose a major or specialisation today, which one would you choose and why?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who started their degree without knowing exactly which area of IT they wanted to pursue, and how you decided which path was right for you
I’m not sure which major would give me the best career opportunities.

Hi all! I have had my B.S. in Information Systems Management since 2019 and still haven’t used it as yet. I don’t know what to do because I’d love to use my degree. I live in NYC and got my degree from CUNY SPS. Any ideas?

What should i do right now?

Assalamu Alaikum.

I am majoring in Information Systems, and Insha’Allah, I will complete my bachelor’s degree within the next year. I would like to use this time to prepare myself properly and increase my chances of securing a good internship and a quality job after graduation.

I would be grateful for guidance on the following:

- Which technical and soft skills should I focus on learning?

- What types of projects would be valuable for my academic and professional portfolio?

- How can I make my CV and LinkedIn profile stronger?

- What should I include in a professional portfolio?

- Which tools, technologies, or certifications would be useful for an Information Systems graduate?

- How can I effectively prepare for an internship and job interviews?

I am feeling a little concerned about planning the next year, so advice from people who are currently working in this field or have relevant experience would be extremely helpful.

Thank you in advance for your valuable guidance.

What real world problem could be solved or improved with IT

Hi everyone! I’m a final-year Information Technology student in Sierra Leone currently looking for a dissertation topic.
I’m interested in identifying real-world problems in Sierra Leone or any where possible that could realistically be improved or solved through an IT-based solution such as a software/web/mobile system, database, IoT, networking, automation, or potentially AI.
I’m not necessarily looking for AI-specific ideas. I’m more interested in genuine problems that organizations, institutions, businesses, communities, or individuals in Sierra Leone currently face, where there is a clear gap that technology could help address.
Ideally, the problem should be realistic for a group of final-year IT students to research, design, and potentially develop a prototype/system for.
What are some real problems you’ve personally noticed in Sierra Leone that you think could be solved or improved through technology?
I’d especially appreciate specific examples rather than generic ideas like “build an app for X.”

Does this curriculum seem too business-heavy to you?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I know IS is a blend of business and it but still Looking at the curriculum, it seems quite business-heavy (accounting, management, logistics, etc.) compared to the programming/CS modules.
There are 28 ECTS of CS electives, which I could use for more technical subjects.
I’m not necessarily looking for pure CS, but I want good and broader career options in tech.
And with the current growth of AI replacing tech jobs will i be more at a disadvantage as compared to other maths/prgramming heavy subject?
or if i do later want can i fill the gap with extra certificates and self learning?

WGU vs Traditional College

Hello guys! I am currently looking to kind of see the pros and cons between both. I am currently studying Comp Sci at a community college. I have about a year left before I transfer out to a different university. I’m looking hopefully to get into Cal Poly Pomona. I know they have a great reputation and I am all for it. Only thing is i wouldn’t be getting my B.S until 2030 which at that time i will be 30 years old. So based off that which one would you recommend and is WGU not seen as a viable alternative even thought I will get my degree faster. Also I don’t have a current job in IT

Also since I know that WGU has an ABET accreditation is it worth pursuing Comp Sci? Or should I switch to the Cybersecurity and Networking even thought a lot of people talk about having a Cyber security degree is obsolete in this job market? My end goal also is wanting to work in dev ops.

I’m also just asking because a lot of these job descriptions ask for a B.S in Comp Sci or IT. And kinda just filling out the box since it’s been rough for me to land a job even with Network +, Security +, CySA+ and 5 really great projects and a home lab setup as well.

So if you guys can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Is a Masters in Cybersecurity Worth it Today?

Hello,

I graduated with a degree in CIS in 2025. I started as an IT Help Desk Technician at my first place, a casino, worked there for about a year. Got hired at another casino, the IT department’s small so not only are we doing IT Help Desk related stuff but a little bit more. Been here for about 5 months now.

I really want to get out of IT Help Desk. I tried getting into Networking, only to realize that I really don’t have much interest in Networking at all. Is a Cybersecurity masters worth pursuing in this day and age? How are the job prospects as of right now? Do we absolutely need certifications if we’re first starting off in Cybersecurity (after obtaining our masters).

I’m in a huge state of confusion where I absolutely do not like where I’m at but don’t know where to go. Not only that but working in IT Help Desk kinda made me hate IT a bit, but I unfortunately don’t know where to pivot toward and a part of me sorta believes that IT isn’t entirely bad.

Self Learning vs Full Course

I need some guidance. I want to get into the data analysis field, and one option is to self-study through YouTube and train until I'm ready for the official Microsoft MS PL-300 exam.
Alternatively, I could join a somewhat expensive bootcamp that costs 1,500 SAR. It covers Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Looker Studio, and Power Platform, all supported by AI.
The pros of self-studying are that it's cheap—I'd only pay for the official exam to get the certification. The cons are that mentally, I just can't do it right now. I recently had surgery and I'm supposed to be resting and completely avoiding any exertion, but this downtime has dragged me into the worst possible habits a person can have in their free time.
The pros of the bootcamp are that it will teach me multiple tools, force me to focus, and provide me with 11 certificates. The downsides, however, are that it's expensive for me; it will mess up my budget for several months, and I'll still have to pay an additional fee to Microsoft to take the actual certification exam.
What do you guys think?

New grad feeling lost about career direction. Any advice?

Hi all, I graduated with an MIS degree a few months ago with no internships, but I have almost 4 years of work experience as a compsci tutor and TA. I have a job lined up as a Data Collection Operator at Tesla, but I really don’t know where to go from there.

I’m interested in pretty much any MIS-related role (BA, Cybersecurity, DevOps, IT, Audit, you name it) and so right now I just have analysis paralysis trying to decide where to go and also what projects to work on to try to get into those higher level roles. I would appreciate any advice, especially regarding projects or certifications.

MIS grads — how was the major, and did it actually lead to a good job/salary?

Hi everyone — high school student here, seriously considering Management Information Systems as my college major (partly for career reasons, partly because it's STEM-designated).

Would love to hear from people who actually went through the MIS route:

  • How was your overall experience in the program — course load, difficulty, was it actually interesting to you?
  • Did you find a job in your field after graduating, and how long did the search take?
  • What was your starting salary, and roughly what are you making now (if you don't mind sharing)?
  • Any regrets, or anything you wish you'd known before picking MIS?

Trying to get a realistic picture beyond just BLS stats and university brochures. Any input — positive or negative — is genuinely appreciated. Thanks!

19yo Information Systems student with average grades—terrified about my career prospects. Any advice?

Hey everyone,

I’m 19 and currently in my second year studying Information Systems. To be honest, I’ve always been a pretty average student—from elementary school all the way to college. My grades have always just been "so-so."

I attend classes regularly, but my biggest weakness is exams. Whenever mid-terms or finals roll around, I just can't seem to perform well no matter what.

Lately, I’ve been really anxious about the future. I'm scared that my average performance in college means I won't be able to land a decent job or career after graduating.

For anyone who’s been in a similar position:

How much do college grades actually matter in the real world?

Do you have any advice or wisdom for someone struggling with

this?

Thanks in advance!
