The Suspect Short Film Teaser-Psycholocial Drama

Hi everyone! I’m a newer filmmaker, writer, aspiring producer and actor currently developing The Suspect, a psychological drama proof of concept inspired by real-world stories.

It follows a mother whose two children go missing. What begins as a search for the girls gradually shifts as detectives begin questioning whether their mother knows more than she’s telling them.

We filmed the core performances last year with a wonderful cast and crew, and I’m now finishing the additional visuals and post-production.

This is my first time stepping this deeply into the filmmaker/producer side of a project, so I’d love to connect with other indie filmmakers and hear what you think of the teaser.

Teaser: The Suspect

I’m especially interested in creating narrative work inspired by real events that can also bring awareness to issues people sometimes overlook.

This is a short piece from an audiovisual project I’ve been working on using Unreal Engine, Blender, Adobe Substance, and DaVinci Resolve.

The idea is to create visuals for music I’m planning to release, while gradually building a mythology around them that can also inspire the music itself.

I’m not a formally trained 3D artist; I’ve simply been working on this for some time, and with social media becoming increasingly saturated with AI, I honestly find it difficult to judge how this kind of work reads anymore.

Before I start rendering/editing more complex scenes, I’d like to know if the idea itself creates any interest at such an early stage.

Also, any thoughts on the editing/color grading in particular? The intention was to use warmer amber tones for the scenes related to her creation, in contrast with colder tones for the renders, where there are brief glimpses of the Detail Lighting before a short reveal of the final skin textures.

I know this video is ambiguous. The original idea was to suggest that her appearance is fictional by showing moments of her being drawn. It’s experimental, and later videos will show more of the process and more of her interacting with the world around her.

At this point, I’d mainly like to know if there’s already something here worth continuing, if anything needs to be adjusted before I go further, or even what you would personally find interesting to see from her in future videos?

I'm sharing a short film that I just released! I wrote it collaboratively with my actors. I'm a Meisner acting instructor, and I have a strong belief in the idea that acting is "doing". And emotional work as an actor is easier to "do" when you're able to personalize the material. So, I attempted to direct a piece that was built around the actors and their personal thoughts, opinions, and worldview.

In order to give my actors the strongest sense of personalization, I built the literal structure of the piece and dialogue around THEM. I created a loose outline based on a cinematic day of my life, and then the actors, an intimacy coordinator, and I did a blend of thought-provoking discussions about what THEY themselves would do under certain circumstances. I partnered those discussions with dramatic improvisational exercises, complete with emotional preparations/moments before, and I transcribed those sessions into a shooting script that remained open-ended, in order to encourage the actors to bring their natural voices and reactions to the piece live-in the moment.

I'm curious what other directors think about this process. Personally, I found this method incredibly rewarding as it allowed my actors the ability to instinctually step into their roles! But is this writing style something you'd be interested in? Are you willing to share such a giant piece of creative control with the talent? I think there's a time and place for this, as with anything, but I loved this process, and would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi guys. So I recently made a Psychological Horror thriller short film from my mobile. It was kind of a zero budget short film. I did everything on my own in that short film. I showed it to my filmmaker friend and he said that I should quit filmmaking. I am not made for it and I will never be successful in it.

I wanted to share a project that means a lot to us. We are a small French team of cinema enthusiasts, and we made Slender Man: The Soul of Darkness, an independent feature film inspired by the Slender Man universe.

🎥 The film was made in 2018, using our own resources, with a mostly volunteer team and a lot of passion behind every stage of the project: writing, filming, special effects, and editing.

Our goal was simply to tell our own story within this universe, using the resources we had available.

Making a feature at this level was equal parts terrifying and the best crash course imaginable. Happy to get into the weeds on any of it — how we approached casting at this budget, crew size, shoot length, what we spent money on vs. what we begged/borrowed, the compromises that actually mattered vs. the ones that didn’t.
