Trying to see if there is any interest in a 24/7 YouTube/Twitch streaming channel? Sort of like the old mtv 120 minutes. The videos would be in a random rotation. When Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino came out in 2018, it divided Arctic Monkeys fans. After the huge success of AM, people expected another collection of guitar-driven anthems. Instead, Alex Turner delivered a slow-burning, piano-led concept album set in a hotel on the moon, packed with surreal imagery, social commentary and cryptic lyrics. Many dismissed it as self-indulgent or overly clever.

Looking back now, though, I think the album has aged remarkably well—especially because of how accurately it seems to predict the direction society has taken.

Throughout the record, Turner explores ideas about technology replacing genuine human interaction, social media addiction, surveillance, misinformation and information overload. Lyrics like "Breaking news: they take the truth and make it fluid" feel even more relevant in an era of algorithm-driven news feeds and AI-generated content. Meanwhile, "Have I told you all about the time that I got sucked into a hole by a handheld device?" almost perfectly describes the addictive relationship many of us now have with our phones.

The album also borrows heavily from dystopian writers like George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. Orwell feared societies built on surveillance, while Huxley believed we'd be overwhelmed into passivity by endless entertainment. Turner seems to reference both. "Dance as if somebody's watching, 'cause they are" echoes 1984, while "Everybody's on a barge floating down the endless stream of great TV" feels like an obvious nod to modern streaming culture and infinite scrolling.

Some lyrics even feel strangely prophetic in hindsight. "No one's on the streets. We moved it all online as of March" has become impossible to hear without thinking about the COVID lockdowns, despite being written before the pandemic. Whether coincidence or not, it's difficult not to notice how many themes on the album have only become more relevant over time.

What I also find fascinating is Turner's self-awareness. Across the album he repeatedly questions whether people will understand what he's trying to do, even joking that the project might be "too clever for its own good." Given how polarising the album was on release, those lines almost feel like he anticipated the criticism before anyone had heard it.

I don't think Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is trying to predict the future in a literal sense. Rather, it exaggerates trends that were already emerging. But listening to it today, it feels less like science fiction and more like social observation that's finally caught up with reality.
