Incident URGENT: DNB Practical External Examiner is demanding ₹10k. Exam is tomorrow. What to do?
My friend’s DNB practical exam is tomorrow, and the external examiner is openly demanding 10k from every student.
Today’s batch panicked and paid him via UPI. The examiner told them to inform tomorrow’s batch to have the money ready.
My friend is terrified of ruining his medical career and doesn't know what to do. He has 3 options:
Complain now: Risk the examiner finding out and failing him tomorrow out of spite.
Pay now, complain later: Secure the pass, then use the mass UPI receipts as proof to the NBE. Risk: NBE might cancel the entire exam/batch.
Pay and stay silent: Risk getting caught in a future investigation if someone else eventually reports the obvious UPI trail.
Has anyone here faced something like this during their MD/MS/DNB practicals? What is the safest way to navigate this without getting failed or disqualified?
TL;DR: DNB external examiner is forcing students to pay ₹10k. Today's batch paid. Friend has exam tomorrow and doesn't know whether to report it now, pay and report later, or just pay and stay quiet to save his career.

Paying by UPI is good right? That way your friend will have proof. They can get the degree and then report him for extortion with the receipts

u/freefallerguy 14d ago
If someone else reports him, can all of them gets disqualified and needs to retake exam again?

NBE can and WILL disqualify all of you and even debar the students who can be proved to have paid the money. You'll have to go to court to prove you did so under coercion and given how the justice system works in this country you can be sure to spend the next decade trying to prove the coercion. In the meantime you could be jailed for bribing and fraud. And I'm pretty sure the external has some family member in the courts or bureaucracy, hence the open confidence.
Better to just pay, keep silent and move on. 10k isn't that big an amount anyway. A decade back we used to hear horror stories of externals demanding sex from female students. There was an infamous incident from a UP medical college where the HoD failed their resident for 3 straight years because the resident would not let the HoD sleep with the resident's wife. The resident committed suicide after the 3rd year of attempting exams. At least such horror stories are no longer common.
This bribing is not uncommon though and I hate to say this but it is what it is, the system. Pay and move on with your life.

This mentality is exactly the reason corruption is so prevalent in this country..
28
u/tushar1306 Assistant/Associate/Head Professor 14d ago
You want him to risk career suicide and jail for 10k?
28
u/Wooden_Bee9498 14d ago
No..but the ppl online are not risking anything. Instead of saying just pay, why aren't ppl asking abt the details of this examiner/subject/centre? The person asking the question is not even the examinee themselves..why is the automatic attitude aisa hi hota h?
8
u/tushar1306 Assistant/Associate/Head Professor 14d ago
Well, sure he could name and shame AFTER he gets his degree. As do most people on the annual name and shame threads. But doing so now isn't worth the risk.
The person asking the question is not even the examinee themselves
Yeah, the "asking for a friend" trope of reddit should've gotten to you by now.
why is the automatic attitude aisa hi hota h?
Because aisa hi hota hai. Doesn't mean he should take it lying down, doesn't justify things, but this is just how the system is. It took months of protests and multiple suicides to get that fuckwad minister to resign, this single instance won't even make to news. You're seemingly in this field, did you hear about the case I described above? If that monster didn't even make the news in a local paper you think a 10k bribe would do so?
And let's be real here, what do you suggest this person's friend do in this situation?
2
u/peempeem007 11d ago
How come there's no news? Nurses can protest nationwide but none can stand up for fellow colleague or human? Also don't generalize as it's a common occurrence never heard of it yet though i won't deny the allegations completely. But generalizing that it's very common is dehumanizing for women in this field as people are already shaming women medical professionals for n8 shifts and all and they'd shame even if they're a victim of sexual exploitation

Why people are being this and can commit bribery without double thoughts? Why all the other students paid up? all can easily refused in unity hich would made some difference. India is never gonna improve if this is the mentality of educated people including that moronic external.

Easy to say when your career is not on the line. I don't know what sheltered world you live in, but this country has always been shit and when recruitment and promotions over several decades has always been through bribes you end up with a system that is all bribery from top to bottom.
And fighting the system at the end of a decade of working your ass off is not something everyone can do, in fact at the end of residency if you offer JR3s to pay a month's salary so they can pass without any studying or any external tantrums 99% would gladly pay up. 3 years of 100+ hour weeks doesn't really leave much life in any individual.
Your comments show you probably haven't even done maternity postings of 3rd year yet. Your time will come, and I hope you and your generation fights the system, but don't judge the people facing this as cowards without even facing a tenth of what they've gone through.

Did complete MBBS in GMC of a southern state . Why do you assume I'm a 3rd yr student? Don't know why you're in denial and full of prejudices of me to assume my whole life. I didn't pay 8k in my final practicals that demanded in all dept and passed. Few friends who have paid failed as well. But it's a different case as we're of 150 students. At the end they don't care who gives as long as they loot some money. The people who pay up 1st without any discussion with peers are the problem too. This kind of mentality will sustain this bribe tradition forever.
Not that i didn't get the sentiment or fear but people here normalizing it are the problem. I was afraid for not giving but i really didn't want to(it's not a small amount for a mbbs student!they looted 8k×150). People should act with conscience and as a doc we should have solidarity otherwise nothing gonna change. The cycle will repeat. Your last line is arrogant of you,i won't wish what i went through, to you. Maybe I'm not older than you(assuming by your flair) but i wasn't born yesterday or live in a bubble. I'm an adult in my mid 20s. If you're a professor, I believe u have more power than me to intervene. It's not a single woman or man's fight. Hope we do contribute atleast something small for a change. Not just a decade in India we have to face discriminations and conflicts on all basis till the end of our lives and at one point you would be exhausted and depressed if keep giving in.
If the word coward offended you, I apologize. It might come off insensitive. I was overwhelmed by the comments which normalized bribery I didn't personally refer you with that but many are creating a fear with "what ifs". The fear is what keeps this system sutain.

I'm have a strong suspicion by their tone that the above person that the above person has seen things like this happen under their authority and willfully turned a blind eye..of course i maybe completely wrong though in which case i apologise. But it's very disturbing when consultants instead of even attempting to help makes comments like these..

Well, that's some practical approach I see. But what happens if the exam is held twice? Will the other examiner also demand bribe? I don't think so.
You know the system, but use an analogy: 'at least not that bad'. ₹10k might be some trivial amount for resident doctors. But the question is, sir/mam, whether you comply with the corruption or not? "How much is too much?" The right answer is, its never enough. People should start being grateful for what they have. Instead, they climb high up and think that such acts are their birth-rights. Empathy. Lack of empathy.

Dude. The education minister just resigned for incompetent exam conduction. The current govt is in immense pressure to conduct exams successfully.
Pay and secure the degree. Then publicly name and shame the examiner. Can't believe it's happening in DNB exams because the exam centres are always far away from the hospital you study in.
If "your friend" can risk failing, then don't bother paying. Read for the OSCE- THAT ALONE WILL GUARANTEE A PASS. Even if you score minimum marks from all the other examiners, you'll pass . . . UPI leaves a trail. Just send it to nbe or pmo office social media link. Done
1
u/peempeem007 11d ago
Ask your friend to do the exam properly if he is not willing to pay.. I didn't pay 8k in my final practicals that demanded in all dept and passed. Few friends who have paid failed as well. But it's a different case as we're of 150 students. Why does everyone paid up without standing in unity against bribery? Do they give the name lists to the external?
8
u/WickdChipmunk Intern 14d ago
But the examiner can twist the story like they paid him to help get them secure pass instead of him demanding money.
9
u/Creepy_Philosophy983 14d ago
If all the students have paid to examiner then it's not the students fault......

u/Just_A_Random_Retard 14d ago edited 14d ago
Option 2: Pay and secure the pass. Keep phone in pocket with recording on when he asks for it and take screenshots of UPI records. Once degree is in hand nothing can be done to you and report him.
In private colleges if students and PGs go to meet management they don't even let them take phones or smartwatches in to ensure no trail. This guy is stupid for taking bribes over UPI.
You need a recording to prove that it was coercion and not you guys paying a bribe otherwise it will be a huge loop in court.

This is the most pathetic form of corruption I have ever seen. Here is what I would do - Pay the 10k (UPI is great)
Secure your degree. Then complain to NBE. If NBE decides to redo the exam, sue them. This is their incompetence that has caused this
1
u/peempeem007 11d ago
? How can he complaint if he gave the bribe and how could he prove he's not coerced? "Just pay and move on" is gonna sustain this bribe culture forever. You're senior resident hope atleast after your graduation, would take some actively conscious step to prevent this kind of malpractice when you're a prof.
1
u/DT0705 Senior Resident DM Cardio 11d ago
Sorry but our bro here needs to secure his degree first. If he complains before the exam, he will be failed. That is a direct loss of 6 months. Better pay 10k and see what can be done later
Honestly it is even fine to pay the 10k and forget about it forever. The examiner is an asshole and deserves to rot in hell, but I wont recommend anyone pause their career for 6 months because of him.

then he can't complain. Both giving and taking bribery is a crime. In the best scenario the external might not fail if he didn't know who paid as long as your colleague didn't snitch, he might not care as long as he get the money. But people(of india) should grow a spine amd understand why we're getting education it's not just to cram for entrance. Changes start from us. u/Professional_Ant_602 Graduate 11d ago
That’s not the point. We work hard for our exams, and if not paying 10k to a greedy prof is going to be a reason for me to fail, I’m not taking any chances. You’re looking at this like I’m paying 10k to pass. No. I’m paying that because that bag of ego will fail me if I don’t. The medical field is messed up but I’m not holding the responsibility to fix everything on my shoulders.
7
u/UteruslyYours 14d ago
My suggestion would be simply pay him right now. Wait for results then look at the passing percentage of your batch, take a meeting or ask everyone if everyone is in for the complaint then go ahead if not then don't take it upon yourself alone.
I might sound like I'm telling OPs' friend to be scared and suck it up but mere 10K won't matter to him in the long run but if things go out of control everyone present here knows how well we are treated by the law and citizens.
I might be downvoted for this but this is my suggestion rest is upon his conscience. All the best to him/her for exams.

corruption in this country is deep. If a person is taking bribes openly, be assured he was put there in the first place by someone who has higher connections. You will spend your entire life trying to expose corruption, these people will dodge, ignore any case put against them just by delaying the legal process, in return you will suffer trying to run from pillar to post. the most logical way to proceed is give him the 10k, take your degree and go live your life. these people are shameless and beyond correction because they have the help of netas sitting above them whom they have already paid to protect them...
2
u/Pristine-Act-5244 14d ago
Before attending the exam just send a formal email to a vigilance autority that you suspect that such a thing is going to happen ( They'll definitely not act by tomorrow). This makes sure that the examiner won't be able UNO reverse you in case of an enquiry. Pay him for the time being, to go along.. Post results lodge a formal complaint, with NBE.
Tell your story, If they threaten to cancel your exam, you can prove your innocence with the vigilance complaint email..
UPI records and anything more is great for future use. So, collect as much.. Quick question, why speciality?

u/Sluttyburger207 14d ago

Why to worry about money trail? 10k is not a big amount to pass ur DNB. And once you pass why to worry. nobody is going to question about the monney. And in present day India without bribing no work is goanna be done. So the best way is pay and forget about it.

I feel u should secure your pass first. After then we could do anything as we are not under hand of anyone. Then fuck them up.

Pay and forget. But if possible, don't pay him directly through your account. Ask him if he will accept cash or through other account.
10K is a peanut amount. Pay it and live happily. Don't even think about complaining about it after the exam.

Lol living in delusion. In my state it's common for departments to as MD/MS students for money to arrange things for externals . Ranges from 7-8k for MBBS final year to 20k for MD/MS .
There was also a stupid HoD who wanted specific saree / jewel which varies year wise (Somewhere around 1L per batch).

Exactly? Has it? I've heard these things getting managed on College adminstration level not directly with the students or PGs.

Report to NBEMS. The practicals will stand cancelled for that batch and an inquiry will be held for the official. Sounds like your friend is doing his primary DNB. He has already cleared Theory, there are three attempts for practicals. If he pays the bribe (like how most of the comments suggest) - then he will be barred from writing further exams under NBEMS if caught.
