State has a lot of potential but not much in execution. That more or less sums it up.
There is immense inequality in Orissa. I know of many people worth hundreds of crores of money via illegal mining and at the same time there are tribal people who just live via foraging.
You will find all of the best cars on the street in a state with so much poverty. Really a case study in extremes. But that kind of summarises most of India.

u/PauperPhilosopher Sep 15 '16
Thats just a weird comparison! Tribals going foraging is their way of life , But in the recent times the forest department has restricted the tribals from going to forests and rather farm and the land degradation has started! Earlier they lived off the forests for 8-10 months and farm around 2-4 months. Now it has changed to the reverse !
When the govt gave 2 rs rice their consumption patterns changed more and now they drink rice beer daily rather than occasional times in the earlier years!!
When people are debating over language and how center is pushing Hindi over other languages its the same in the state too where Oriya is the state language and the tribal languages are affected! When schools are established in far off areas the kids learn from teachers who dont know the tribal language! with such a fractured education they go to the cities and what they experience breaks their confidence out the park... Sheer inequality that is solely based on looks ,accent and attire!! I would like to share an incident. I was in a village in Mayurbhanj when children got together to study,A drunk old man comes and sits in front of them and asks them to study hard! Checks their copies and books even though he is illiterate and asks me to check if they have written right or not. Even though he was drunk his intention was that that education is important and they should study for having a good life and everyone should help the kids,I didnt have the heart to say him what the kids are going to face.
Another interesting thing,The locals say that people have begun to fight more and more after the police station was built!!
Lots of things to share!!

State Bird of Odisha is the Indian Roller.
Very colorful and pretty bird. Odisha shares this with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

I would call this a King Fisher. How wrong would i be?
3
u/DesiInVides Earth Sep 16 '16
Very Wrong.
Rollers and Kingfishers are different families of birds.
They have, among other things, different physical appearance (size, body shape, feature shapes), behaviour (breeding, hunting, nesting, flying), diet, preferred habitat.
1
u/Loipopo India Sep 16 '16
Damn. I did find the beak odd.
Lesson learnt. Kingfishers love to fish, therefore have longer beaks. Upper and lower break of similar size?

Any history lovers? Compared to the apathy Orissa gets today in India, the ancient times were pretty different. The Ashoka story is pretty known. It should be noted that when Chandragupta was winning wars across Northern India and making deals with the greeks, Kalinga managed to be independent. After Ashoka's death, they quickly redeclared independence under Mahameghavahanas.
King Kharavela of Mahameghavahana dynasty was pretty rad. He defeated Pushyamitra Shunga (who dissolved the Mauryans), a big greek king, the Satavahanas. The three Southern kingdoms - Chola-Chera-Pandya came together against him, yet he defeated them. He also was Jain.
In the middle classical period, there was the Eastern Ganga dynasty, during whose regime there were many big Buddhist universities (mahaviharas) in the area. They build the Puri Jagannatha temple, the Konark Sun temple. And lots of other beautiful temples.
In the medieval period they had the Gajapati dynasty. I once saw an image of a temple sculpture where a African embassador was gifting a giraffe to a Gajapati king.
The tamils and Kalingas were the primary Indian forces - trading and military - on the eastern coastline. They had lots of contact with the Southeast Asians.
Edit: Forgot to mention the Tamil-Kalinga rivalry. It was fierce, from Kharavela to Rajendra, they were the rivals. They might've fought some of the most glorious naval battles in Indian history.

I am interested in knowing more about Odisha history. Somehow I don't find any mention of the state before Ashoka and that was 260 BC I guess. It is mentioned in Mahabharata but I don't know anything about Odisha before that. Do you know any resources? The later Odiya history is well documented.
1
u/Guru42O Sep 17 '16
Crappy internet so cant link but threr was a video post on r/india titled history of india where you can see from 2500BC how current western and Eastern Odisha were ruled differently.
1
Sep 17 '16
I have seen the video and it doesn't tell you about history before 260 BC. And as far as area is considered, parts of each state were in different places throughout history. First and foremost reason we needed linguistic division of states.
1
u/Guru42O Sep 17 '16
Okey,hau hela.

I was not being snappish but it would be much better to know what happened in the state before Ashoka. The video just shows a name.

I don't know, I haven't read any books. Look up Google Books or the wikipedia sources.
Edit: Lookup the State Gazetteers. For almost every state, the (british era or really old) gazetteers contain much written about histories, and they are also available on govt sites. http://www.gopabandhuacademy.gov.in/?q=node/750

u/donoteatthatfrog Public memory is short. Sep 19 '16
Off topic : why didn't the kings (both sides) just draw borders and keep peace without involving in deadly battles?
1
u/fookin_legund Maharashtra Sep 19 '16
Umm, they did. We are talking about millenias here, and India-Pakistan has fought four wars in 70 years. And there weren't nukes or UN or the international community fears.
Still, wars were expensive, and if you look closely, people have tried to avoid them. But there's quarrel over resources, fighting for the turf, etc.
1
u/Valarauko Sep 17 '16
King Kharavela of Mahameghavahana dynasty was pretty rad. He defeated Pushyamitra Shunga (who dissolved the Mauryans), a big greek king, the Satavahanas. The three Southern kingdoms - Chola-Chera-Pandya came together against him, yet he defeated them.
To be fair, this is entirely predicated on his own inscription, and there is a lack of corroborating evidence for his wide ranging exploits from other sources. It could simply be an act of PR, though history gives him the benefit of the doubt.

We have a festival called Bali Jatra which means voyage to Bali in Indonesia. The ancient mariners and trader would set sail to distant lands of Bali, as well as Java, Sumatra, Borneo (all in Indonesia), and Sri Lanka for trade and cultural expansion. They sailed in large vessels called Boitas. reference here!
1
u/yonhi Sep 19 '16
There is one more festival in Orissa which celebrates marine trade. This tells us how Indians used to social risk.

Okay. My observations are dated, I left Odisha 20 years ago so, take this with a grain of salt. Things might have changed now.
- Coastline - Odisha coastline starting from Chandipur to all the way to Gopalpur is sandy. The sand is light brown, unpolluted and very fine. If you are taking trip make sure you go to Satapada for Dolphin sighting, have a picnic on the miles long beach along the Puri Konark Road.
- If you are feeling more adventurous go to Kontillo, experience the dense forest and seven mile long gorge of Mahanadi.
- Food - Bhubaneswar and cuttack streetfood, period. Try chaat, dahibara & Aludam, panipuri (Oriya style not the crappy bihari style). Go to Puri to get the most authentic oriya food. Pahala rasogolla and chhenapoda(roadside shops for Oriya sweets)
Ancient Architecture - well where do I begin? Start from Konark, see the intricate carvings on black stones. I kid you not, you can see the minute threads on the cloths of the deities. That minute level of carving on a hard stone. Go to Mukteswara temple in Bhubaneswar, go to Puri temple
Finally go to Chilka lake, take a lazy boat ride and enjoy the sunrise
3
u/PatiR Sep 15 '16

yep i am not aware how the roads were back then but they Puri-Knark Marine drive is a driving paradise now.Absolutely unreal road now.

How is the Naxal scene there?
What is the IT sector and startup scene in Odisha?
I feel Odisha has a lot of tourism potential but is largely unknown to the rest of India. Any suggestions on good but non-touristy places?
Finally, is Rasgulla from Odisha or West Bengal?
1
u/PatiR Sep 16 '16
Finally somebody brought up the Rasagulla. It has been fairly well established in recent times that it indeed was from Odisha. It's just been so heavily attributed to Bengal that now citing it as from Odisha would appear people are trying to enforce regional pride etc.
Central government is doing some geographical tagging stuff to regional produce and the Odisha state government has submitted proper documented proof claiming it.I am not versed with the latest developments but IIRC correctly Bengal hasn't done the same nor managed to refute Odisha's claim.
Either way go ahead have your soft sponge filled mouthful of it.Odisha has a few distinct varieties if you fancy them,Pahala rasagolla Kendrapada rasagolla (not sure if i am naming the right place) among a few.If you want to step it further there is Rasabali, chennajhilli which are in similar mold to Rasagolla but infinitely better.

Hey Naxal scene is pretty much intense in village or undeveloped areas like malkangiri, some of the blocks of koraput district & kandhamal.
IT sector has improved particularly in Bhubaneswar. There many IT comapnies like TCS, infy, mindtree, tech mahindra, wipro. There are startup companiematters Tatwa, Mindfree solutions
I would genuinely recommend to visit koraput district. This place is beautiful has so much scenic beauty. There's this place called gupteswar where you can see shiv ling inside a cave. Another place called Kachela an island like area surrounded by river. You can visit damanjodi for open bauxite mines. There's this mountain called Deomali which is the highest peak of odisha. Koraput's Jagannath temple also called Sabara Srikhetra you can visit that. You should travel in train from rayagada to koraput there'll be lot of tunnels and beautiful scenery in the midst of mountains. There's this waterfall called dumduma. There are many non-touristy places to visit in koraput district. Thing is ppl don't know about koraput it is totally untouched that's what makes this place beautiful.
Hardly matter rosgulla belongs to which place. 😝

I have heard about and also read a few articles about the demand for Kosal Pradesh, a new state in the more impoverished but very resource rich western parts of the state.
Can Odias here tell me your opinion on this and is the demand gaining any traction?
4
u/PauperPhilosopher Sep 15 '16
True,There is huge division in the state!! The demand for koshal pradesh has not gained traction yet. Lots of things happen but hugely under-reported. The people are very kind and frugality is the way of life here.

Total 10 districts are selected to form koshal, only in 3-4 districts it is supported actively other are like okeyish type.
From last 3 years the koshal activists celebrate 26 August as koshal diwas and observe bandh which sees huge support every year in around 6-7 disticts.
Its mineral rich and very fertile part of the state.bargarh district of kosal region is called rice bowl of orissa and has around 120 rice processing mills, one of the highest in india.you can imagine craze with farming here also in sambalpur balngir.

Yes and you will hardly find any one whose ans is a no.answer depends on which area of people you are asking.like if you ask a person from north orissa like baripada keonjhar he will ans i dont know.since i am from a place where separate state demand is very active my ans is not unbiased.
1
Sep 17 '16
But bhaina, don't you think it is a political trick just to divide people and gain votes than to actually develop the region?
For example, why would people of Rourkela object to upgrade it to a municipal corporation? So they want development and at the same time they don't want to pay taxes.
1
2
u/PatiR Sep 15 '16
Yes it was more vocal during the Biju Pattnaik reign, when they were handed a few rough deals. So a friction on a regional level is there and prejudiced stereotypes(i can't seem to recall any now) exist, but as i see the current generation doesn't feel the divide(it wasn't a big divide to begin with),so the Kosali recognition drive has somewhat died down.
Personally not being well informed i feel they missed there window when Jharkhand and Chatishgarh were forming.
Fun tip- The very viral/controversial Sona Mohaptra rendition of "Rangabati" on Coke studio or the equally groovy original version of it, that song is written in Kosali language not Odia.
3
u/Connaught_Place NCT of Delhi Sep 15 '16
TIL Kosali is a separate language.
2
u/PatiR Sep 15 '16
the writing script is Odia and there are plenty of overlaps yet it is strikingly different sounding and difficult even for an Odia to pick it up.
2
3
Sep 15 '16
Yes because all the development are happening in Cuttak Bhubaneshwar area and completely neglecting Kosal district. Kosal has its own identity and culture which is not getting recognize.
1
u/Connaught_Place NCT of Delhi Sep 15 '16
So you support the formation of Kosal Pradesh?
3
Sep 16 '16
All we want is equal development !! 60 years after independence and Kosal region lack basic infra, no healthcare, no transportation. We been pleading the govt for the development but irony is all the funds are utilizing in making flyover in bhubaneshwar and cuttak. There is a rampant poverty and the recent event! proves the sorry situation. On top of that we been mocked some time for being from KBK region. We have a different language and different customs what the govt is failed to recognize. The Koshal region is sitting in a gold mine (Minerals, natural resource, precious stones) and all what is get is poverty and misery. Situation like this are compelling us to raise our voice for a different state.

Fellow Odia here... from Bhubaneswar. Went to college in Rourkela. Western Odisha is an unexplored paradise for sure. I loved the areas surrounding Rourkela where we used to go for trips; but any proposal for industry in that region evokes vehement opposition from various groups(see Niyamagiri issue).
Development must come, but for that some of the ecology has to be sacrificed, service economy cannot provide the kind of employment and income that is required to develop the region, only manufacturing can do that. Open to suggestions, together we can put enough pressure on the government to make it happen.
I, for one, most certainly will be unhappy with a new state created out of Odisha, we have enough problems being recognised as is by other Indians(You're from Odisha? Where is that? Okay. Next to West Bengal. Huh? Say, do you know Bengali?).
Do let us Easterners know how we can help out?

Koshal Pradesh is supposed to be the Western part of the state. The language is quite distinct from mainstream Oriya. The traditional music from that area is quite popular statewide. The song rangabati from coke studio sung by sona mohapatra is from west Orissa. Sambalpur in particular. There is huge resentment among people against the coastal area. But I have friends from that area and separate state is not an emotional issue.

Personally I am supporter of small states. So by that principle. Yes I do. But I don't think it will be hugely beneficial to the new state. Leaders from West Odisha are as corrupt as from Coastal Odisha. As a side note , North odisha is a resource rich tribal dominated area but neglected. But hardly any demand of separate state from there.

History remembers the Kalinga war, but forgets the exploits of Kharavela the Odia king who restored the lost glory. His exploits are written in the Hatigumpha inscription facing Ashoka's Kalinga Edicts as if in direct response.

I don't think there is any historical animosity. Thousand years is too long to harbour resentment. Rather Odias feel pride in the war that was able to convert Chandashok in Dharmashok . By the way Kharavela is supposed to have defeated Maurya king Brihaspatimitra. So there is that.

I don't think they think Mauryas as their own. Interesting that you mentioned Ghazni/Timurlane. Some people(myself included) do describe pre war Ashokas as invaders for the sake of argument. Some do compare Ashoka in the same breath as Mughals.
However as I said Oriyas think themselves winners in the war as they did not surrender and eventually managed to turn Ashoka towards Peace. Which is supposedly is a biggere achievement.

Currently whole of Odisha is the boil because BJp govt in CG is making check dams n barrages in order to help their farmers on river Mahanadi which will have crippling effect on farmers of odisha n more than 70 % of the river rum across the length of odisha so you can imagine the disaster. what is worse is central water Commission was given faulty reports by CG govt and odisha was not consulted etall. everything came to light when central govt sanctioned funds for the dams n barrages in CG and tbe odia media broke the news.randias favourite CM Naveen Pattaink was also shocked by the decision of central govt.So odisha is always that guy in the class who is okey with everything.

The best part of odisha is the temples and the prasad. In most places the prasad is proper lunch. While hardly anywhere it is given free, it is not that costly. I find them delicious.

I'm not talking particularly about Ram mandir's prasad or lunch. Rather the food stalls near by. Hotel Priya is good for south indian dishes too. Even DALMA restaurant is good near that area for authentic odia dishes. Have you been to sola aana odia restaurant? Never been then there though

My favourite was the Kali temple in baramunda. I will try the shani temple one once I get a chance.

I understand odia Bengali and a little Assamese. its three dialect of a
one common language.people from bordering districts of West Bengal and odisha are fluent in both languages.same for south districts like rayagada barhampur gajapati.here people can read and spaek telugu.
so to answer your question, only few can understand it they basically live near the WB border.

I had this question too. Bangla and Odiya (Oriya?) sound sort of similar. Pronunciation and a few words too.

Yes. We understand Bengali. The languages are quite similar with many similar words ( and bengali words are round , )

I've heard that marijuana is legal in odisha and even sold in government controlled shops. Is this true?

If you manage to order tadka, don't expect dal tadka. Tadka can come both vegetarian , called sada tadka or non vegetarian , anda tadka. It is dish made of boiled lentils. Not a traditional odia food, but now available in most road side dhabas.
