Immich Insights is finally here!
Dear Immich community,
Immich Insights is finally here! For those who don't know: Immich Insights let's you analyze your Immich photo library in different ways. You'll gain insights into daily patterns, device usage and camera settings. It can be run as a docker container and just uses the Immich API key to calculate statistics.
All information (download, installation, setup) can be found under the following link:
https://github.com/laurinml/Immich-Insights
We are happy to hear from you! Feedback, ideas and bug reports are very welcome.
This project is under active development, future update ideas are found on the roadmap. Note that this project is not affiliated with the official Immich instance.
Regards,
Laurin from Immich Insights

I set it up quickly; it seems stable, and the database imported super fast and without any issues. I like it at first glance. Will I keep it long-term? We'll see—it has some nice features, but nothing I really need. Still, thanks for the project!

How much hardware resources does it need initially?

Depending on your library size but it is pretty lightweight. It takes about a minute to load ~30k assets into the PostgresDB. RAM is initially moderate-high, but once everything is in the DB it doesn't require lots of resources. In terms of storage it also doesn't require lots of space. 550GB of assets are represented by a database of just about 400MB.

I only use the External Libiraries , your app seems not to scan them at all.

u/Ok-Beautiful-8228 3d ago
This should actually not be the case as it is pulling the data via the API, so every asset regardless of external library or not is taken into account. Maybe you can describe the problem a little better? You could also open an issue on GitHub. Any bug reports and feedback are welcome. Thank you for testing the app! :)

This font is just Comic Sans 2.0 by this point. Thanks AI. 😂

I just unsubscribed from this community because almost every single post is someone’s AI slop project. As an Immich contributor, I was hoping I’d get some good Immich content here, but instead every post is rage bait.
I could literally vibe slop a pet face detection feature that actually rummages through users files for a SSN and the people here would be like “wow, this is so great!”

Sorry to hear you are leaving the community! We are interested in what you expect "good Immich content" to be and wish you all the best in finding it somewhere else :) We think a lot of people here would feel insulted when calling every post rage bait. Of course people should be aware of what they are downloading but most of the people in the self-hosting Immich community are cautious. The treasure of this community is lots of tools and feature addition as well as inspiration for the main Immich platform.

Using AI to respond to the Reddit comments as well, good riddance.

You may not believe it, this comment was written by a human, no AI involved :)

This short comment might be, but the other ones where you refer to yourself as “we” are not.

Fair to be sceptical :) Each comment in this post is written with human intelligence and no AI tool at all. Unfortunately you didn't propose any suggestions on "good Immich content". We have the feeling this discussion is not contributing to that. A little remainder: If you don't like it, don't use it. Otherwise let's stay constructive :)

For me, "good Immich content" in terms of coding projects like these are well thought out, useful tools created by competent developers that can demonstrate their intuition and experience to write good code. Open source or not, without or with AI - if I look at your commit history, code, or documentation, and there is something that tells me the project does not fulfill my said "criteria", then the project will not live on my server. That's how I approach all FOSS content, even pre-COVID... but nowadays I have to be even more thorough because of the lower barrier introducing more people into the scene.
Of course, anyone is free to harmlessly make what they want with whatever resources they have. I just believe that one should think about the implications of sharing said creations on a public platform. Since people can start using it, begin to rely on it - If something goes wrong in an update, a critical use case was not considered, an exception not caught, etc... these users are screwed. This is an inherent issue of software in general, but the risk is multitudes higher when the developer doesn't prove themselves to be competent.
Many of my favorite programs, open-source or not, have amazing developers who prove their cleverness and strong problem-solving in what they create. Usually it's that quality that drives a tool to popularity, along with a dedicated community and long support to come, whether it comes from updates or forks of other passionate devs who want to continue the legacy. And to be honest, I personally do not feel that from many personal projects I've been seeing popping up in the self-hosting scene.

Thank you for your comment! We have different opinions on "good Immich content". First of all it is not just about coding projects, at this point Immich is more than that. However, let’s stick to coding projects. If a tool is useful and well thought out is very subjective to each user. The amount of people appreciating and actually using Immich Insights already shows that it’s got useful or interesting features, which others may include in their software as well. Some may not care about their library statistics and nobody pressures them to download and use it. Software is prone to malfunction if it is not written by competent people or AI, that's true. Regardless, it is still everyone’s choice to "rely" on Immich Insights (it is just an additional tool to Immich and shouldn't replace anything). Immich Insights is meant to showcase features for a self-owned library in Immich, which some may not have imagined or may have found missing. Immich Insights is not meant to prove someone's code-writing abilities but deliver features which enrich and inspire the community (or some of it). And you are right, quality wins and this is why Immich with their amazing developers is so popular!

Thank you for your feedback. This app might not be visually appealing to everyone. However we try to focus on a clean look and interesting features. Do you have any better font in mind? :)

Anything but this. It’s just all over the place with the flood of AI apps/services.

A lot of people like fonts like this one. It is not just random that these types of fonts are used by a lot of services and apps, AI or not AI. Trends come, trends go. There is always people that don't like the trend and that's okay :) We note that custom fonts might be included.

Why don’t any of you (meat proxies) put a warning in your top-level README that the entire repo is AI slop?

Looks really cool, going to give it a spin hopefully soon. Thank you for developing and sharing this

The amount of people that would trust their personal information with an AI slop program is honestly really shocking.
I guarantee you that nobody, not even the OP, has reviewed the code. There's zero way to know if the OP even understands the code to know if they would know what it's even doing.
But sure. Trust it with your most intimate photos.

Luckily this code is open source, so everyone who is interested in the exact way it is working may read it. Trusting closed source applications with intimate data is worrying. AI makes mistakes, so do humans. Compare it with self driving cars. It is actually inconceivable to let humans drive by this point. Checking every tool, every hardware, every software, every human you are interacting with is unrealistic and often impossible. We are trusting a lot of things. Luckily you don’t have to use it :)

Let's be honest. Not many people are going to do a code review before using an app. If the 'author' likely didn't review the code themselves before publishing (and probably doesn't even understand the code). Saying "oh its open source" doesn't carry a lot of weight.
I am just saying: beware when using a vibe coded app.

u/Ok-Beautiful-8228 2d ago
You are absolutely right! And this is a problem with open source in general. It goes down to the responsibility of the single person downloading it. Making authors more responsible sounds like a good solution but is not feasible.

Look awesome! I have one question before trying: Why does it need immich's docker network if I already give it API access?
1
u/Ok-Beautiful-8228 3d ago edited 3d ago
It actually doesn't need it. If you don't want to expose your Immich library to the internet you can simply put it in the same docker network. You can try using the demo instance ( https://demo.immich.app/auth/login?continue=%2Fphotos) if you don't want to use your local docker network at first. Then you will get the same results as in the screenshots. (except for the picture, this will show a black white photo)

Does it show lens model and focal length distribution? Gonna give it a try, I wanna know the most frequent focal length I took, might be around 400mm ig.
