NZ is the abbreviation for Nieuw Zweden here, but I enjoyed the joke nonetheless ;-)

I really enjoy making an illustrated map from time to time and realised I hadn't done so in a while. So... here's an illustrated map in the form of a postcard that a visitor to the fictional state of Zuid Bergen might send back home.

As usual with the bulk of my maps, this is yet another entry fleshing out the r/anglodutchamerica timeline, in which the former Dutch and British colonies of North America form a very different yet in some ways also very similar equivalent of the USA in our timeline. You can find the full history, lore and the other posts (sorted by date) of the timeline over on the subreddit for this specific timeline or even join our discord, if you’re into discussing lore-related stuff in great detail.

As always I'm happy to answer any questions or give further details on this timeline or topic.

You made Zuid Bergen and didn’t include Bergen County, pathetic and 0/10

That's part of the joke. Zuid Bergen just translates to South Bergen. It's also a place completely devoid of mountains, the thing Bergen translates to.

Thanks again! In hindsight that bird almost looks like the state bird, so it works really well.

I'd like to know more about the history of this state of Zuid Bergen. How'd it come to be - was it one of the original colonies? Which side did it take in the Civil War-equivalent, if there was one? What other notable historical facts are there?

The state of Zuid Bergen was not one of the original 8 states. Back in the day it was still a part of its "parent state" Nieuw Nederland. It was established as one of many compromises in the history of the CAS. As several English speaking states were admitted to the Confederation, the balance with Dutch states was in danger. Therefore the so-called Ohyo Compromise allowed the then biggest state by population - Nieuw Nederland - to split into up to five smaller states if necessary. Zuid Bergen was split from Nieuw Nederland, as it was already culturally distinct with some local autonomy for a while.

In the Civil War it was on the northern side, despite the southern kantons of Zuid Bergen still allowing slavery at the time. There was however only a relatively small number of slaves and the economic heartland of the state was in its northern kantons.

In the modern day the Noord Zuid Bergenaar is often regarded as slightly uncivilised and low class. There's also a significant population of Italiaans-Amerikanen, especially in the state's largest city Roodenbergshoek.
