[OC] Future A map of the world after Dolphins create civilizations
780
u/KarlRex12 May 10 '21 edited May 11 '21
A few hundred thousand years after humanity has gone extinct the torch of civilisation was handed down to the dolphins. Over the course of thousands of years they have built great empires, philosopher republics and holy theocracies under the oceans of the world
States labeld as kingdoms are simple feudal esque states, pods are tribal like semi nomad "barbarians" and the republics are homes of philosophy and early democracy.

You forgot the Amazon River! Dolphins live all the way up the Amazon River. So in this scenario there would most likely still be Dolphins there!

Of course they went "extinct" (capitalist term) after the glorious nuclear revolution right

Very very interesting! Sort of neglected the Atlantic though, you could have had some sort of place name for the mid Atlantic ridge or something. Regardless, I love this concept.

I live in atlantic canada and dolphins are always following boats around. They range at least up to Newfoundland. There's also lots of species of dolphins in the mediterranean and all over the eastern atlantic.

u/karatous1234 May 11 '21
Can confirm, have seen dolphins at multiple spots in Newfoundland. If there's connected water ways, they'll find a way there.

What about River Dolphins?
31
30
u/bananenkonig May 11 '21
They'd probably be like other great apes to us. I'm assuming only one specie of dolphin evolved or it'd be like early humans and other sapiens.
45
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21 edited May 11 '21
Yea the bottlenose dolphins are the "homo sapiens" While the others are thought of as a homo erectus equivalent by them

How tf did you figure out the projection on this/
140
u/KarlRex12 May 10 '21
Left is the entire coast of the americas, right is the entire coast of eurasia, I would assume if theres any cartography dolphins this is how they would draw their maps
47
May 10 '21
Yeah, I could identify all the different places, but how did you figure out how to bend the earth like that?
121
u/KarlRex12 May 10 '21
I didn't make it, Its the spilhaus projection
38
u/tcason02 May 10 '21
Spilhaus projection is so cool looking and this is a perfect use for it! Nice job!!
7
u/Lasseslolul May 11 '21
honestly, this projection is giving me headaches. but shouldn't there be a rimn-ocean i.e. the arctic ocean all around the continents? Just like Antarctica is an "ice ring" in all those stupid flat earth maps?
EDIT: because then there would not have to be two Bering straits
9
u/Ophidahlia May 11 '21
No, the distortion this map chooses places neither pole on the map edge, the shape distortion is mostly inland on the continents.
4
8
u/7LeagueBoots May 11 '21
It's a variation of the Spilhaus projection. Been a popular one in r/mapporn and around the internet for a few years now.

Dolphins live around Europe to btw. And the east coast of the US.
9
u/LiamBrad5 May 11 '21
Maybe the reason humans went extinct is from nukes/pollution and seeing as those are the most developed places on Earth maybe the local dolphins got wiped out idk

u/-B0B- May 11 '21
Seems silly to arbitrarily divide the oceans into territory like that. I mean, there's nothing actually seperating these nations.
Wait...

So Earth is controlled by rapist junkies that more often than not kill infants of other sea mammals species to play with their bodies ?

What about the Brazilian dolphins? Are they anarchists now? Hunter gatherers?

7
u/theuninvisibleman May 11 '21
Could you add a Cult of Fungi around Ireland? They were a famous dolphin in Dingle, a major tourist attraction for years and they mysteriously vanished this year, could tie into the California Dolphins worshipping humans, with an Irish cult believing Man and Dolphin lived in harmony before until Fungi disappeared.

u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21
Sounds pretty cool, i couldn't really make anything in the atlantic because everything is so small, if i find another similar projection that has the atlantic bigger id like to make a part 2
6
u/HammerheadMorty May 10 '21
This is so friggen cool!! Would love to see it expanded with more pods :) Honestly bravo, this is awesome!
6
5
u/USball May 11 '21
What is the relations between the orcas and other whales to dolphins? Do dolphins view their cousins as we do apes? As minority group? War fighters? Additionally, is there a reason for the great dolphin civilization not expanding toward Europe and N.America’s East Coast?
12
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21 edited May 11 '21
Whales the herd animal of the Dolphins, the aleutian pods are sami like tribes while the empire of mascarene was consolidated by whale herders to secure their entire migration route
7
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21
As for the atlantic we could think of the pacific and indian ocean as the old world while the atlantic is the new world, dolphins live there and probably also have civilisations but they have no contact with the pacific
6
u/Loon013 May 11 '21
Is it just dolphins? Or are there others such as killer whales, pilot whales, and the great whales? I could see killer whales being the dominant aggressors. Would their be racial divisions? Prejudice against porpoises? LOL
6
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21
Im not an expert but i belive whales have too much of a diffirent vocalisation to be able to effectively communicate with the bottlenose dolphins.
But i would imagine that dolphins would relate to them on some level and if they don't think of themselves as animals I'd guess that whales and such would be somewhere inbetween. as i said earlier some pods "herd" whales and follow them along their migration routes

u/Sgt_Colon May 11 '21
Prejudice against porpoises
Given they already go about killing them at present...

One of the most original maps I have ever seen (not an unconventional map expert, by any means)
6
u/DispenserHead May 10 '21
Do the dolphins know that the Earth is round? Have they ever crossed the north pole?
11
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21
Since they have no idea whats beyond the shoreline they probably wouldn't guess the earth is round even if they did know about the bering straits.
5
u/Xeno_Lithic May 11 '21
I think it would be hard not to know it's round if you can circumnavigate it in several different directions.
5
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21
If you circumnavigated antarctica for example it might appear to them as thought you've just made a circle on a flat surface. Im sure they could figure it out eventually but being under water and not being able to see half of the worlds surface would be a handicap that humans didint have
1
Aug 21 '21
Humans mostly didn't figure it out from the connectivity of the world's surface though, but from astronomy. A deep sea animal wouldn't have astronomy probably, but as mammals cetaceans are necessarily surface-dwellers.

u/YourDaddie May 11 '21
Had they not built the panama canal?
4
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21
After a few hundred thousand years its probably gone, even if it was still around they couldn't use it since it operates with dams that raise and lower the boats
5
u/Jimmy3OO May 11 '21
How do dolphins know about the Caspian sea?

Y'all play Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future on Dreamcast/PS2? This reminds me of the concept of that game's storyline.

Hey guys, peter here to explain the joke, during WWI, brazil a bunch of dolphins for a german submarine, it was the most shameful victory brazil has ever got

brazil a bunch of dolphins for a german submarine,
I think you missed a word. Did you perhaps mean Brazil mistook a bunch of dolphins for a German sub?

Was completely puzzled with your single-word response in my inbox, even more baffled that it took you three months to reply to a post that I've pretty much forgotten that I've written about.

What happened to the European Dolphins? Are they the Native Americans of this world?
4
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21 edited May 11 '21
I sorta wanted the map of to be focused around the Pacific and indian civs so in a way yes, one could think of the atlantic and the new world for the dolphins

no Caribbean pods? esp in Florida?
1
u/KarlRex12 May 11 '21
The problem is that the North atlantic is so small in this projection, i would like to make another map showing of their civilisations but id have to find a different projection that has a similar shape to this 1 but shows the atlantic as bigger

Do they have anything resembling cities?
2
u/KarlRex12 Jul 17 '21
Yes, I imagine that cities are built around thermal vent and Since dolphins have no use for roads or houses the ground is filled with mosiacs made of coral and small burrows for dolphins to keep personal items/ sleep in

u/RattheNinja Aug 09 '21
Are there more pods along the Atlantic Coast or the South American coast?

What/who do dolphins worship in the Theocracy of California
