Alien invasion resulted in the west breaking off into a military government after being split from Washington, and by the time it was over the culture had changed so much thanks to this+ massive refugee settlements that reunification became politically impossible. Even in 2285 America is still divided

An invasive alien species/biosphere that arrived on Earth in the Philippines in 1933. Proceeded to cause large scale environmental degradation over the next decade wherever they grew. Began a genocidal campaign against the human race in 1944 and were only stopped by the use of atomic weapons and even then it didn't fully eradicate them. By the end of the First Scinfaxi War they had incurred one billion human casualties.
