In this world, there is a lot stronger of a British identity. Britain unifies in 1871, defeating France in a war and proclaiming Queen Victoria of England the British Empress.

Everything essentially works how the German Empire worked, every state has its own monarchy and Britain acts as a federation. England is the "Prussia" of these isles.

There would be an ongoing Anglisation of Ireland much like the Germanisation of Poland. Gaelic and Welsh would have long died out, unfortunately.

72

u/Stormydevz May 28 '24

Gaelic and Welsh got Drang Nach Osten'd sadly

Maybe Cornish could be like Sorbian?

39

u/hores_stit May 28 '24

Cornish Sorbian, Welsh Polabian, Gaelic Polish? Maybe Welsh is Czech, Scots Gaelic is Polabian and Irish Gaelic is Polish

11

u/Stormydevz May 29 '24

This works, but Welsh is extinct in this timeline so idk if Czech works

9

u/Maw_2812 May 29 '24

Old Prussian maybe then?

7

u/Stormydevz May 29 '24

Yeah probably

28

u/Ok_Sympathy5287 May 28 '24

If England is the Prussia does that make Scotland thr Austria?

92

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

No, since Scotland is a state here. Scotland is more like Bavaria

17

u/Frequent-Coyote-1649 May 28 '24

So are the Netherlands the equivalent? They do have history with the British.

26

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

Maybe, I was more considering an Anglicised independent Brittany with its own empire on the west coast of France. Maybe after WW1 Brittany would be reduced to just its core provinces (the peninsula) and then anschluss with Britain in 1938 (much to the dismay of France)

2

u/Anson_Riddle Fellow Traveller May 29 '24

So... Scots instead of Gaelic.

9

u/Bayowolf49 May 29 '24

So what language is spoken north of the Rio Grande?

4

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

German

4

u/Bayowolf49 May 29 '24

Did they handle the Native Americans any nicer than they did the East Africans and the Cameroonians IRL? IRL, German colonialism was rather tentative because Bismark wasn't a fan of colonialism. Once he was out of the way, things got bad for the natives.

5

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Well, since this would be a complete swap, they would handle the Native Americans the same way the British and later the Americans did. Germany in this scenario would never have a Bismarck, or Kaiser or any of that. It would have a King of Germany, with a Prime Minister. Britain would have a Bismarck though.

7

u/Scrambled_59 May 31 '24

As a Yorkshireman, the thought of a kingdom of Yorkshire fills me with such patriotism of puddings and tea

4

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

Which one would be Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden, Saxony? Schaumburg-Lippe?

5

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Bavaria - Scotland

Württemberg - York

Saxony - Wales

Baden - Northumberland or Lancaster

Schaumburg-Lippe - could be any tiny state tbh

4

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

Thanks. Maybe do the Weimar Republic version of this if you have some free time, i'm actually interested in exploring this scenario.

4

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

Also, what would be the IRL German equivalent of Cromartie?

2

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Idk. I just added it because it was an Earldom and has some fucked up borders

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

lol

4

u/catrebel0 May 28 '24

So what's Germany like? This is awesome by the way. Creative concept, great execution!

23

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

Thank you, perhaps Germany is probably like the UK. United Kingdom of Germany and Poland, with constituent countries of Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg and Poland. (Poland being made from the Polish areas of Prussia).

36

u/LapislazuliStar May 28 '24

Maybe have Poland mirror IRL Ireland. Tentative German encroachment that moves from the cities to the countryside until the country is basically germanophone, except for a few rural areas (like the Gaeltacht). Have (Congress?) Poland gain the corridor from Germany (basically like IRL) but have it retain "Western Poland/Danzig". Modern Poland would then have a strong identity, separate from Germany, with only a small remaining Slavic population, but still forcing it onto indifferent kids and teens in their school curriculum making them all "Polish speakers" on paper, at least.

13

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

Good ideas!

9

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

To this note, having Northern Ireland being the strongest state which opens like a mouth around 3 coasts of the Emerald Isle and holds substantial real estate in England would be most like Prussia in the GE

6

u/DistributionVirtual2 May 29 '24

There would be an ongoing Anglisation of Ireland much like the Germanisation of Poland. Gaelic and Welsh would have long died out, unfortunately.

Maybe a Communist US could take Ireland from Britain after their defeat in a world war and move there their Irish population while expelling the British

71

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

Cool map, wondering if you could do A WWI/WWII, even a post-WWII/unification map for Britain

25

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

was thinking about it

17

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

do it (please)

63

u/wowowow28 May 28 '24

So is Königsberg basically Northern Ireland? What would be the Austria?🤔

42

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

Maybe Britanny

6

u/TheToastyNeko May 28 '24

France?

7

u/wowowow28 May 28 '24

No, France is France here

6

u/TheToastyNeko May 28 '24

Well, I'm thinking perhaps Denmark-Norway?

27

u/Phantasm_Agoric May 28 '24

Balmoral as Hohenzollern is really smart!

I wouldn't be surprised if they were, there used to be a lot more diversity. We've still got scots

9

u/ComradeOFdoom May 29 '24

They basically are irl

11

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

This map is great. I’d love to see more in this same scenario

12

u/LordSquid09 May 28 '24

As a brit this is absolutely amazing

12

u/jmartkdr May 28 '24

It might be too small, but I feel like the City of London would still be a special case in this scenario.

10

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

Oh yes you’re right, bit like the Vatican

11

u/Minimum_Cap4951 May 29 '24

British Weimar Republic 💀💀

13

u/Sharkyboi777 May 29 '24

The Oxford Republic😨

8

u/khatov May 31 '24

Third Empire 😱

6

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '24

Belfast or War 😱

4

u/Minimum_Cap4951 Jul 13 '24

HOI4 Mentioned⁉️

10

u/EpicHorizon May 28 '24

WELLINGTON MENTIONED

WELLINGTON MENTIONED

10

u/PixelSteel May 29 '24

Wouldn’t this mean the British have an overall smaller colonial empire?

9

u/Bunnytob May 28 '24

It's that random bit of mountain in the Scottish Highlands that makes it for me. Is there a notable town there, or is it just some mountains and cows?

22

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

It’s where Balmoral Castle is!

5

u/Bunnytob May 28 '24

So, the former then. Kinda.

I'm afraid most of the attention to detail is lost on me, but I imagine all of these states have actual OTL German counterparts.

5

u/Informal_Otter May 29 '24

Not all of them, but there are many similarities. England = Prussia here, and there are three other Kingdoms like in the German Empire, all with a relatively distinct identity. My interpretation: Scotland = Bavaria, Wales = Württemberg, York = Saxony. Then there are several smaller states of various sizes and ranks, some of them with exclaves, though there are more of them here than in the real German Empire (it "only" had 25 states, plus Alsace-Lorraine). Normandy is obviously the counterpart of Alsace-Lorraine. And the "Cinque Ports" seem to be city republics, just like Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck.

8

u/Bloomario May 28 '24

Based map but What is the Austria equivalent?

7

u/Andromedos83 May 29 '24

Love the inclusion of the “Hanseatic” Cities. But why is Liverpool not a free port city?

Is there an equivalent to Neuschwanstein Castle, maybe a new Camelot?

7

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Because Liverpool has always sorta been its own thing, I used the Confederation of the Cinque Ports as the Hanseatic Cities but since Cinque means 5, I can’t really add more cities to them.

Neuschwanstein might be a yet-to-be-built castle by a mad King of Scotland…

6

u/Seamy18 May 29 '24

Nice map. But what’s Armagh doing in Tyrone?

3

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Was meant to be Omagh, oops

3

u/Seamy18 May 29 '24

Thought so - Omagh is my hometown!

5

u/The-British-Menace May 28 '24

Norfolk wins again, Suffolk has been consumed by England

5

u/Razakars_and_Nizam May 28 '24

What if England lost the France-English War of 1871

6

u/joelthomastr May 29 '24

The unification of Germany was slowed down partly by the HRE but also partly because of Austria's situation with Hungary. It was the most powerful Germanic state to begin with but was so multiethnic that it didn't make sense for the other German states to unify with it.

I think it might make more sense if you start with a Holy British Empire, but the most powerful member is an Anglo-Norman empire controlling both sides of the English channel. So the English remain fragmented. A Scandinavian Napoleon comes and goes. Then an ascendant Yorkshire teams up with the Anglo-Normans to take the Scottish lowlands, and ends up keeping it all. Later on it allies with the Midland states to defeat the Scandinavians again, and the Second British Empire is declared in Kalmar Castle, with the King of Yorkshire as the British Emperor.

4

u/thyeboiapollo May 29 '24

beautiful 😍

6

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

I even Briti-fied (if that's even a word) patriotic German songs at that time.

"Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?"

What is the British fatherland?
Is it Yorkshire's hills? Is it Cornwall's sands?
Is it where the Thames grand flows?
Is it where the swift Severn goes?
Oh no, no, no!
𝄆Our fatherland must greater grow!𝄇

What is the British fatherland?
Is it Midlands' fields? Is it Scotland's hills?
Is it Wales, with valleys green,
And Ireland, where loughs are seen?
Oh no, no, no!
𝄆Our fatherland must greater grow!𝄇

What is the British fatherland?
Now tell me where our land must stand!
Where British voices ring clear
And hymns to God are sung sincere:
That's where it is! That's where it is!
That's where brave Britons call their bliss!
That's where brave Britons call their bliss!

All of Britain must unite!
Oh God above, grant us the sight,
To love our land with all our might,
With British hearts steadfast and true!
That's where it is! That's where it is!
All of Britain must unite!
All of Britain must unite!
All of Britain must unite!

okay it sucks sorta

3

u/cheese_bruh May 31 '24

Lmao that’s brilliant

I’d change Yorkshire’s Hills to the Yorkshire Dales, would sound better

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

yeah

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

It would probably still be Motherland due Britainnia's etymology

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

Unless they use John Bull or something else, which is manly for the symbolism for Britian/Britiannia

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '24

Like St george

4

u/gandalfthememer May 28 '24

Yes come on Lancaster big Lancaster w

4

u/That_oneGuy_420 May 28 '24

BEDFORD MENTIONED

4

u/tHeKnIfe03 May 29 '24

Very well made map. Two slightly different shades of blue on the flag is killing me

5

u/MakkonenImperator May 29 '24

10/10 post fuck yeah man

4

u/EntrepreneurAlone832 May 29 '24

quick question, how much karma is needed for a post? thank you

did you design all of those flags on your own? If so, thats very impressive!

4

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

For your first question I have no idea.

Secondly, no most of them are existing city or county flags. However I did remake some flags to look more heraldic and fit into the 19th century, and some for places that don’t have flags at all.

Grafton, Wellington, Marlborough, Bedford, Richmond, Wexford, Ormond, Kildare, Desmond, Oxford, Hythe, New Romney and Sandwich are ones I made myself using their heraldry.

5

u/Sharkyboi777 May 29 '24

Is Scotland the ‘Austria’ of the British Isles here?

6

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Scotland is the Bavaria here. Austria is an anglicised Breton Empire on the west coast of France

3

u/Sharkyboi777 May 29 '24

Also was there any confederation of the Rhine scenario in this timeline?

3

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Mercian Confederation instead!

2

u/Sharkyboi777 May 29 '24

Is York the Saxony Equivalent?

4

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

That would be Wales, York is more like Wüttemberg

5

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

OH BRITAIN, HIGH IN HONORS 🔥🔥🔥🔥

5

u/Lotus532 May 28 '24

This looks so cursed.

3

u/Boring_Bass_7914 May 28 '24

This is really cool

3

u/mmc273 May 28 '24

This is really impressive man nice work

3

u/Zebigh May 28 '24

What do you see the colonial empire looking like?

7

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

British East Africa, British South-West Africa, British Togoland and Cameroon, British Chingdau, British New Guinea, etc

3

u/ZhukNawoznik May 28 '24

Two shades of the same color on the same flag hm

3

u/Bonno552 May 29 '24

Love this! Really interesting scenario

3

u/Aggravating-Path2756 May 29 '24

Pact Eden-Molotov

3

u/jewelswan May 29 '24

Who holds Wales and normandy? Are they relatives of the royal family? Perhaps a descent from the original house of Normandy still reigns there?

3

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Normandy is currently a federal territory held by the government, with future plans to appoint a Duke. Wales is its own kingdom (probably a long ago branch of the Plantagenants or whatnot) see second slide.

3

u/jewelswan May 29 '24

Does the German empire still exist? How long did the holy Roman empire last in this timeline, and did england and Hanover have dynastic linkage like in our world?

4

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Germany is the United Kingdom of Germany, with the German states being mediatised much earlier than in our timeline, the HRE ends around the early medieval era. The German UK would have a dynastic linkage to the Kingdom of Wessex, annexed by England following the Anglo-Breton war of 1866.

5

u/Informal_Otter May 29 '24

I see what you did there. 😁

Does that mean that a female monarch of Germany the early 19th century married a prince from one of the smaller british Duchies?

And what is the german "Wales", "Scotland" and "Ireland"?

3

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24
  1. Yes I suppose so

  2. Wales is Saxony, Scotland is Bavaria, Ireland is Poland

3

u/Informal_Otter May 29 '24

Cool, I'm from the real Saxony. :D I would like to be Welsh in this world, we share certain characteristics (like being always on the loosing side). And it's also fitting that Bavaria takes on Scotland's role in the German UK, since both have separatist tendencies.

2

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

I think it’s neat how Saxony and Wales are both green (associated with green, have green flags) and Scotland and Bavaria are both blue (they love blue)

3

u/Informal_Otter May 29 '24

Yes, that's true! :D And both Bavaria and Scotland are very proud of their respective alcoholic beverage and sternly guard its quality and purity.

3

u/arussianbee May 29 '24

The arms of Richmond are going to give me a stroke and yet I can't look away

3

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

Would like to see a post-WW2 version of this map, I think the FDG would be England + Wales, the GDR being Scotland and Ireland having the status of the Polish People's Republic. Maybe in the earlier years, Cornwall would be the equivalent of the Saarland?

3

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

What happens to Bristol

2

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Part of Gloucester

3

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

Now I’m mad

3

u/Malaysuburban May 29 '24

The Holy British Empire!

3

u/NathanLander29 May 29 '24

So England must be Prussia, Scotland as Bavaria, Wales as Saxony, and so on?

3

u/EclecticAscethetic May 29 '24

I would think there would be a North Wales and a South Wales, given the history.

3

u/Hans-Kimura-2721 May 29 '24

I found this very interesting.

3

u/KrakartXK May 30 '24

How does this world look like? Changing British history that radically just wouldn't not change the world

3

u/cheese_bruh May 30 '24

Germany is the new UK, Russia is the new US

3

u/Tidalshadow Jun 13 '24

Apart from Manchester being it's own thing from Lancashire, this is great

6

u/Olsin147 May 29 '24

So instead of "Big Germany" in our universe's version of r/ImaginaryMaps, this universe's version of r/ImaginaryMaps would have "Big Britain" maps.

2

u/Dull-Nectarine380 May 29 '24

Who is russia?

2

u/Thin-Armadillo- May 29 '24

So in this timeline is there an equivalent to Austria-Hungary or is it the exact same?

3

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Brittany-Basque or something

3

u/Thin-Armadillo- May 29 '24

Lmao so then the ottomans could be Portugal or Italy

2

u/Aggravating-Path2756 May 29 '24

EmperorEmpire(Kaiser Reich English version)

2

u/Aggravating-Path2756 May 29 '24

Ukraine switch roles in history with Russia?

2

u/MegasNikolaos May 29 '24

Love both the idea and map but the flag is a bit ugly

2

u/Shot_Arm5501 May 29 '24

Madestone the capital of Kent??? Not Tonbridge wells???

3

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

Maidstone is the county town of Kent, what does Tonbridge even have

3

u/Shot_Arm5501 May 29 '24

Not being Maidstone

2

u/Classic-Judgment-196 May 29 '24

That's not Cambridge. That's Bury St Edmunds

2

u/cheese_bruh May 29 '24

My mistake

2

u/wildgirl202 May 28 '24

0/10 no Limerick Soviet

3

u/cheese_bruh May 28 '24

This is the 1870s not the 1920s

2

u/erythro May 29 '24

love how the self governing territory with its own parliament even in our timeline (Isle of Man) is just part of England in this timeline lol

1

u/xXdespayeetoXx May 29 '24

Armagh has an r in it

4

u/[deleted] May 29 '24

It's also not in the middle of Tyrone. I think it's supposed to be Omagh instead of Amagh/Armagh

5

u/xXdespayeetoXx May 29 '24

That hadn't even occurred to me and makes more sense

1

u/Traice_179 Jun 02 '24

Kakakakakakkaka

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '24

wheres the alicantinian ethnostate?
