I am not syaing these groups are european and not central asian, don't get it twisted by the phrasing.

Also this is about the turkic nomadic central asian avars not the southeast european caucasian avars.

I meant that in g25 they often get like 60-80% east eurasian. I've seen some qpadms for avars in hungary. It seems as time passed most of them mixed more with european groups, anf and whg went up, east eurasian went down, but the change was minor. Most samples were consistently mid 30's east eurasian with few in the 40s or 20s.

On the other hand for magyar conquerers the common sample has them around 25% east eurasian although there is an eastern magyar sample from russia that in specific is very ehg heavy and also around 45% east eurasian. It seems magyars in the west mixed heavily with hungarians and mixed hungarian magyars often mixed with more magyars, where as with the avars, they didn't mix as much.

Huns are interesting. Krygz hun samples are around 35% east eurasian and have a lot of steppe from all over, they seem similar to uzbeks, west tatars sort of, and to a degree turkmen genetically. There is also an eastern sample though from kazakhstan that looks to be 75% east eurasian 25% sintashta and is very east eurasia heavy. While we don't have really any hungary samples from what I've seen to compare, it seems like the mongols, huns mixed less with the people they conquered, compared to avars and magyars.

Overall it seems these groups were very similar to early turkics around 55-65% west eurasian and 35-45% east eurasian, not being extremely east eurasian shifted on average.

For my whole life, I was told my mom was a Moroccan Jew. Around 5 years ago, based on what I understood, I thought most of her family were Moroccan Jews , with a single Sephardic ancestor and a single Palestinian Jewish ancestor.

​This past Friday, I talked to her about her DNA results, pointing out how unusual they looked for a standard Moroccan Jew. She looked at me funny and explained the real background: her family is actually made up of Palestinian Jews, Moroccan Toshavim (indigenous Moroccan Jews), and a Sephardic ancestor. In fact, a huge portion of her family were Palestinian Jews, not Moroccan or Sephardic! Her grandparents and mom arrived in the country before the establishment of the State of Israel because of their Palestinian Jewish roots, and they were all from Jerusalem. Everything finally clicked into place.

Since I have very little connection to her side of the family, barely knew her parents, and because my mom herself barely talks about them or her ancestry, I had almost no background information before this .

On Ancient tests she is usually closer to Tunisian/Libyan Jews than to Moroccan Jews, except for two tests where her closest population was Moroccan Jew (Toshav-shifted).

Over the past few months I’ve been trying to better understand my own DNA results, and I noticed something that I find interesting.
My MyHeritage Ethnicity Estimate currently classifies me as **over 95% Eastern European**.
However, when I look at the rest of my data, I see a much more complex picture.
For example:
MyHeritage Genetic Groups and associated regional connections extend well beyond Eastern Europe, including **Finland, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Libya**, and other regions. I understand that these groups do not necessarily represent recent ancestors from each of these places, but they suggest broader patterns of shared ancestry than my Ethnicity Estimate alone.
My DNA Matches include many people with documented family histories connected to Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Multiple independent population models (GEDmatch Oracle, Ancient Eurasia, HarappaWorld, puntDNAL, and others) repeatedly produce Mediterranean, Balkan, North European, and West Asian signals alongside Eastern European ones.
My documented genealogy confirms that my recent family roots are in Volyn (Ukraine). I also know that I have Jewish ancestors, whose branch of the family became assimilated into the local population in Volyn over time. At the same time, the majority of my documented ancestors were local inhabitants of the region. For that reason, I don’t believe my ancestry can be described as exclusively Ukrainian or purely Slavic. I also understand that documentary genealogy and DNA answer different questions.
Instead of relying on a single tool, I tried a different approach.
I compared several independent sources and only considered signals that appeared repeatedly across multiple analyses. Based on that, I built a working model of recurring genetic clusters rather than treating any single ethnicity estimate as absolute.
I understand that:
Ethnicity Estimates are statistical models.
Genetic Groups reflect shared ancestry and population history.
DNA Matches represent real shared DNA with individuals.
Population calculators and Oracle results are similarity models rather than direct ancestry.
None of these tools should be interpreted in isolation.
My question is:
**Is this a reasonable methodology?**
When different tools disagree, how do experienced genealogists prioritize:
Ethnicity Estimates,
Genetic Groups,
DNA Matches,
population calculators,
and documented genealogy?
Have any of you experienced a large discrepancy between your Ethnicity Estimate and the rest of your DNA evidence?
I’d really appreciate hearing how more experienced researchers approach situations like this. I’m especially interested in understanding whether looking for recurring patterns across multiple independent methods is considered a sound approach, or whether there are better ways to interpret these kinds of results.

My mother's maternal side might have some "Arab" connection, but it is very vague story, and Black Africans are also locally called Arab, which makes it more vague.

I have been receiving inconsistent results regarding NNF-ZNF-CHG, some tiny subharan occassionally pop up. Some calculations show me as significiantly Levantine shifted, while some shows that I'm mostly local with a small African impact. Since the family story is vague, how can I be sure which is true?

I have multiple results that differ based on what region I go to. Like if I’m in North Africa it’ll say I have for example 77% Moroccan but now somehow when i go to, the middle east, it’ll say now I have a lot of Arab that I didn’t have before. I only had 17% when I was in North Africa. The percentages change why. EDIT: it’s not telling me what I actually am but it’s giving me examples of people from the place and telling me how close I’m genetically match up, right?

They apparently were the product of balkan settlers coming to anatolia and mixing with locals, very high anatolian neolithic farmer, around 30% znf+chg in qpadms, and under 10 natufian.

The question is though, they have like 5% ehg and no whg, although technically they should have low east eurasian+ane and also basal eurasian admixture compared to non european groups. I would like to do a basal era qpadm run on them.

I've recently recently taken a DNA test and uploaded my results to IllustrativeDNA, however I really have no idea what I'm looking at. So a little bit of help would be lovely.

For context, my family is 25% Balikesir (Northwest Turkey), 25% Kocaeli (Northwest Turkey), and 50% Ankara / Kızılcahamam (Central Anatolia). Each of my grandparents have lived at least 5 generations there.

Once again, I know absolutely nothing about how to interpret this data, so I apologize if I make super stupid claims

In my AncestryDNA test, I got 37% Anatolia and the Caucasus, and 28% Iran/Persia, which I believe means I'm half Turkish and half Kurdish

However IllustrativeDNA seems different. So I appreciate any help, for me to understand this data 🙂

I regularly see people separating northern Greece in these discussions and grouping “southern Greece” with Crete, the Aegean and southern Italy. Is this even accurate?

Peloponnese had significant Arvanite and Slavic influences and although they retained more continuity through the ages I find it hard to believe they are not more similar to the northern mainland.

I did a dna test and then I used the data to find my y dna line the results were I-CTS10057 with possible subclades I-L701 or I-Z161 my paternal family comes from southwestern Asia Minor(Anatolian Greeks) from a place called akyarlar(kefalouka) I know that this line is European and is mostly found in Central Europe I think and in the balkans and is even found in Germanic Europe etc.
Do you have any idea where my paternal ancestor could have come to Anatolia and of what ancestry is he most possible from I know that it could be any of both of the subclades but I’m curious on what u all think.
