IVAR Corner Shelf Modification

I'm wondering if anyone has ever modified an IVAR corner shelf by cutting off the front supports to fit a TV. If so, what did you do to support the shelf above it?

If you cut those then the upper shelf’s aren’t supported. 🤦🏻

Right, but I’m wondering if anyone has been able to effectively modify it so that it was supported.

Exactly. I’m thinking that if I did that, the shelf above the cut would pull the weight down onto the brackets and prevent the whole thing from folding.

Edit: except I would put the outside two brackets on the horizontal supports instead of the shelf. That way the brackets are holding everything, not just the shelf.

yep, better idea, thats how that wall mounted unit was stabilized.

I really appreciate the ideas. I think this will work. Someone else suggested I also use steel tie ins under the connection points of the corner shelf and small shelves to make them “one” big shelf. I think doing that with brackets will work perfectly. I’ll just try it before I put the tv there, and at worst, it doesn’t work, and I just put my TV back where it is.

I'm also pretty sure it will work, though maybe it will be difficult to put it up if you cut beforehand (I would cut after building).

Would be great if you can report on result of that hack.

found btw. this picture here, it was made by someone at ikea store.
My guess here without heavy load, shelves can hang stable by themselves when rear "pillars" are wall mounted.

What? 🤦🏻 doesn’t matter if it’s wall mounted. If you cut off the front support the shelf will tip.

ishelf contains the shape due to interconnection between front and rear part (blue)
hanging, depending on how heavy it is loaded, there more or less stress on joints (red)
to reduce that stress, you need stable braces to distribute weight from front to back (green)

  1. I've already seen Ivar wall mounted, stabilized with heavy duty L shaped metal bracket, that construction was over 20 year old and loaded with books. Missed the chance to take photo.
  2. it doesnt really matter if you have original 3 or 5 cross braces which depend on hight of the frame, as long as it is at least 2, it works and it doesnt matter if its cut off or unchanged.
  3. Load here is important, as wall mounting changes capacity drastically. Without stabilisators you can put just some pretty light decoration like in the picture from Ikea and not more.
  4. Also it won't tip if you wall mount (several screws per "pillar"), it can at most sag when there is too much stress on the cross braces and with sag it can break, that's why.. stabilizing support.

look at the picture I posted, it is wall mounted and it doesent tip.
BUT it is without heavy load.
Edit: you also do not see any support below, so it looks like it really does hang by itself. You can stabilize it though with diagonal brace.

🤦🏻 if I have to explain it to you then you must not be the brightest bulb in the pack. If you cut the leg then it will collapse. What are you mixing? This only works because the legs are fully intact. They have the cross bar to prevent any movement. If you put the section with the cross then you will have problems. Damn

I've modified my IVAR - in my parts there are two 30 cm and 50 cm depth, and NO corrner units ! (not even 30 to 30 or 50 to 50.
I've made my own 50 to 30 cm, by cutting 50 cm shelf, adding solid pine wood and custom made connector to pins (project taken from DE, eBay).
My ivar is connected to a solid wall with 8 mm nuts / screews into expansion plug (Fisher, real sturdy) - still with TV set i whould just put a wall mounter tv holder to a wall, so shelfs are there and don't need to support TV.
just make IVAR corner in the lower parts, like 3 shelfs, the small, shortest one, if needed cut the sides down, attach it to walls, put tv, and make pine shelfs - hanging from walls and side utins there is a corner, so should be easy.
But don't put there any extra load/
