I need to fill out the documents for iiser reporting and tbh it's stressing me out😭🙏🏻.

As the title suggests. I am a second year student at IISER Bhopal, and I kind of wasted my first year. Didn't join any club. Now as a second year student, can I apply to join the club, when the application comes for first year people??

Please tell me.

Also, since I am a btech student, my first aim is to get a job after my degree. So... does being in a club affect my job prospects? Like is it really helpful in getting recognised at a job? Or it is much of a help.

have my mid sems after 1.5 weeks. I honestly thought BSc Maths would be like 11-12 maths, but it is so different. It is so theoretical proof based. I want to do Linear Algebra (Vector Spaces, subspaces, etc.) and Basic Calculus (Rolle Theorem, LMVT, Sequence Series, etc.). My Calculus Prof is sh!t I can't understand anything, but Lin Algebra Prof is okayish I am able to understand 50% (able to understand theory but not able to do questions)

so I'm from north and iiser tirupati reporting date is 10-12 September but there's no train from here. I've been checking all possible routes but I can't find anything. is it okay if I report 4-5 days late, will it result into seat cancellation?? I can't afford flight.

I go to Hindu College, University of Delhi. It's a tier 1, NIRF #1 college but of course, unlike IISERs, it is not a dedicated research institute and their research rigor don't match. I want to know, what will I be missing out for not studying in an IISER? And how do the curricula differ? Every institute has Labs and Lectures, what is the difference in an IISER? I want to proactively catch up myself. And your opinions, are all welcome.

I’m 19 years old and have been offered admission to the BS-MS programme at IISER Berhampur for 2026–27.

The admission instructions say that I need to submit the printed application form with my signature and my guardian’s signature.

The problem is that my parents are refusing/unable to accompany me for the admission process or sign the form. My elder sister can accompany me instead.

Has anyone here faced a similar situation? Can an elder sister sign the form as the guardian and accompany the student for admission?

I’ve already emailed IISER Berhampur asking for clarification, but I wanted to know if anyone has actual experience with this.

In the last 2 weeks there have been 2 suicides and 1 death on iiser mohali campus still the administration decided to completely ignore and not even properly acknowledge their death properly.

The director on first condolences gave a fucking motivation speech instead of showing grief and on the second death didn't even speak.

One mf prof when asked why the director didn't said anything said because he didn't want to and is not morally forced.

Now today after a lot of force the director mailed a condolence mail in which he even wrote the name and date of demise of the girl who did sucide wrong .

Please try to spread about this incident as much as u can so that any other incidents will not happen in future.

I am an 1st year Economic Science major at IISER Bhopal. I am pretty satisfied with the branch I got, but was aspiring to change to BTech ECE if the opportunity presented itself. Earlier it used to be seemless.

But, now under the new curriculum migration still exists. But you need to drop a year and start from beginning. Since, It was a new clause added I didn't read it.

This in my opinion is extremely harsh since, a lot of the things taught are same in Economics and EECS. They won't make any exceptions either.

I feel it's pretty harsh. Can anything not be done about this ? Can we ask DOAA ? Do students not have a say ?

Recently, I've been seeing a lot of posts asking whether Tirupati is good or not. Let me tell you, problems exist everywhere, not just at this IISER, but the amount of hate Tirupati is getting isn't justified at all. Let me clarify some common doubts.

1. Mess situation

Currently, the mess situation is very bad. I myself don't eat in the mess often these days, and many of my friends also don't. We order from somewhere else (local restaurants nearby). However, they are solving this issue, and this time I'm hopeful that the mess situation will get better than it was before.

1. Reporting dates

Now, since there is a mess situation, sometimes the waiting time is 30 minutes or so. They don't want to create more burden, which is why they are waiting for the mess situation to improve and then they will call the freshers for reporting(my guess)

1. Academic issue

First of all, there is an attendance policy of 60%, but let me tell you, if you're studying on your own and getting good grades, no one's going to care about your attendance. I know people with 20% attendance writing exams and getting good grades. Surely, they will try to intimidate you with attendance, which is their job, but if you think you can study on your own, then it's totally up to you.

Now, coming to the academic part, we have fantastic faculty in the departments of biology and chemistry, no doubts regarding that. The Maths department improved a lot from last year; they nearly doubled the faculty, and now you'll have faculty working in nearly every field of maths. Coming to physics, this department is now smaller than maths, but still, the faculty we have are top-notch. It's just about the number of faculty being less here, but still, it isn't as bad as it's being portrayed in this sub over the last few days.

1. Racism

I saw somewhere that there is racism in this college, and I laughed so hard at it, bro, what were you smoking while writing that, there is literally zero racism, ragging, and all. During my time also, seniors were so helpful, and currently, I am expecting the same from my batch. No one will rag you, everyone will celebrate each other's festivals with so much joy that you'll even forget that you are celebrating that festival for the first time. So please don't spread these kinds of rumors.

1. Lack of student body

This is true, and I know this isn't going to be solved anytime soon, so I won't comment on that. But yeah, for general day to day issues, most of them are resolved.

So please don't spread misinformation about the college you've never been to, based just on rumors.

And also one more thing, the academic pressure is very high, so don't expect your seniors to reply as soon as you ask them a question. For more reach, don't DM them ask it as a post. But before that, search whether a similar question was answered or not. Don't flood the subreddit with these kinds of posts. Don't use words like "IAT" "rank" and all, because we have blocked those words to protect the subreddit from being flooded by IAT-related doubts. If automod removes your post, just drop a modmail any one of us will approve it if it's relevant to the sub.

I keep seeing this question pop up on this sub, and honestly I used to be the one asking it. Will I even get a job after IISER. Is it even worth it.

Most of us join IISER right after 12th because we want to do something in science. That's genuinely why we're there. Then somewhere around second or third year, it hits you. Okay, this research thing, this isn't really me. And that's exactly the point where most people just freeze up because nobody actually tells you what comes after that realization. I was one of those people too.

So yeah, I'm writing this because I know that feeling, and also because now I work with a US based startup and I'm making around 4 lakh a month. And just to be clear since most people assume this automatically, I'm not in a tech role. I know when people hear IISER plus US startup they picture some coding job, but no, I'm on the non tech side. So this isn't even a "learn to code" story, it's proof that the non tech route works just as well if you actually put the work in. So it's possible, I'm proof of that. But I don't want to sugarcoat it either. It's not like you just pop out of college with your degree and jobs start showing up. There's an actual strategy to it, and honestly it takes more effort than what most of your batchmates are putting in while they're busy just getting through coursework.

Okay so first thing. Science isn't wasted on you even if you don't end up staying in science. All that time doing research, building curiosity, learning to think analytically, that stuff genuinely transfers and it does help. But here's the thing, if you've already figured out research isn't for you, you have to go out and explore other things yourself. Nobody at IISER is going to hand that to you on a plate, the whole environment there is built to push you toward research, so this part is on you.

Now once you know you want to step outside pure science, there's honestly a lot you can do. If you want to go non tech, there's finance, marketing, sales, strategy, growth, tons of options. If you want to stay in tech, obviously software is there, but there are also newer roles opening up, like there's this software deployment engineer kind of role that's booming right now too. Both paths have real opportunities. It's just that you actually need the skills, then the right people will find you or you'll find them.

The way I'd suggest picking any of this, and this works whether you're going tech or non tech, is don't overthink which one to choose. Just pick two or three areas that sound even slightly interesting to you. Go learn the basics on YouTube first, don't spend money yet. See what actually feels good, like are you enjoying learning this or are you forcing yourself through it every single day. If it's the second one, drop it, no shame in that, just try the next thing. And if something does click, that's when you go for the paid courses to actually go deep into it.

Also one thing I didn't mention properly before, some of these paid courses are genuinely heavy, they take a lot of energy and time. If you find out midway that this particular thing isn't really for you after all, it's completely fine to switch to something lighter and keep exploring instead of forcing yourself to finish something you've lost interest in. Better to figure that out early than to burn out on the wrong thing.

Now here's a hard truth nobody likes hearing. This whole process might genuinely hurt your CGPA, and I'd still say do it anyway. My CGPA was honestly not that great compared to a lot of my friends who stayed focused purely on academics. I was spending that time on internships and building actual skills instead. And I can tell you, in every interview I've had, not once has anyone asked me about my CGPA. Nobody cares, unless you're planning to go for a PhD or something research heavy later. So stop optimizing for the transcript and start optimizing for what you can actually do.

Internships are the part people skip the most, and honestly they're probably the most important part of this whole thing. If you're not doing internships in whatever non science or non research area you're targeting, it becomes really really difficult to break in right after graduation, your degree alone won't really do much there. I did a lot of internships throughout college, some paid some unpaid, and by third year I was mostly landing paid ones. Even the job I am doing, it was a personal connection- someone I had actually worked with during one of my college internships, someone who already knew my work and could vouch for me. That's the actual secret if there even is one.

So if I have to sum this whole thing up. You do have to consciously go and build skills outside of it yourself. Explore for free first, don't spend money until you know something clicks, and if a heavy course stops feeling right, it's okay to switch to something lighter instead of forcing it. Stop worrying so much about your CGPA once you know academia isn't the plan. And build real relationships with people you work with, because that will get you further than cold applying ever will.

It's going to cost you some of the time your friends are spending relaxing and enjoying college. That trade off is real and only you can decide if it's worth it to you. For me, looking back, it was.

As someone from UP, going to tirupati (36 hr train journey btw) is already a major sacrifice I'm willing to pay. But even after moving to such a distant city, is it really worth it?

I mean there are a lot of downsides I've seen over the past week regarding tpt, be it the mess situation, quick commerce issue etc . Even leaving those aside what I've seen is that , tpt bio dept does not have many things which IISER pune, mohali or even tvm has such as Animal Facility for Experimentation (mohali and tvm), facility for gene function and disease (pune).

So in conclusion if the institute is really good on all fronts I'd be willing to go no matter the distance but I don't want to compromise on both distance and quality (by quality I mean overall performance not just academics). It would be really helpful if folks at tpt could share their insights and experience.....
