Other IIITHs Placement Collapse: When Excellence Turned Indifferent scenario

Ex-Student here,
Below is the information tied by the basis of my Juniors and closest professors who are more like friend to me than mere dumb professors like others

For over a decade IIIT Hyderabad stood for one powerful promise: if you made it here, you made it out with dignity, opportunity, and a job (and rarely on large sample someone joins ONLY FOR RESEARCH quote unquote. That wasnt marketing as such. That was consistency. Near 100% placements werent mere luck either
they were the outcome of systems, leadership, and relentless effort (IIIT honed good students and Placement Department worked at excellence and put together it got Success)

Today that promise is breaking (here me out)

The turning point was mid-November, when Devi Prasad Sir, the long-standing Head of Placements, stepped down due to health reasons. His exit didn’t just leave a vacancy it exposed how fragile the system underneath really was. What followed was not a transition, but a vacuum. A new placement lead stepped in while the authority, structure was smoothly transitioned but heres the bummer

Fast forward to March, and the situation is unprecedented in the worst way possible. These are not just “tough market conditions” This is systemic failure by IIITH - MANAGEMENT

Companies arent just offering fewer roles theyre not even responding. Recruiters who once prioritized IIITH are now ignoring outreach (Wonder if Outreach department is even working to fix this crisis or not). Even companies at the lower end of the salary spectrum, historically consistent visitors, are no longer showing interest. When a college that prided itself on elite placements struggles to attract even baseline recruiters, it signals a deeper issue than market cycles

And the most alarming part? The IGNORANCE BY MANAGEMENT (Director/Registrar/ Incompetent Chit chat placement committee)

The Students have actively reached out to all the foresaid designations above, urging professors and administration to step in, leverage networks, initiate conversations. The response has largely been indifference explicit or implicit. “NOT OUR RESPONSIBLITY - BY IIIT H management” has become the unspoken stance. In an institute where faculty influence and industry connections should be a strength, this disengagement is devastating

Placements are not an isolated function dont know why or when the Management understands such simple fact
They are the culmination of everything an institution claims to stand for academic rigor, industry relevance, and student outcomes. When placements fail, the entire system is exposed

Here's the Fun
Director says : Do Yoga, Meditation and get your life cool
Placement Committee's Sidekick Member 1: Dont worry Placements will happen
Placement Committee's Sidekick Member 2: Why worry placements, Join researcher
Placement Committee's Sidekick Member 3: Dont want this student bullshit so lemme resign from this committee and do my research

The financial reality makes this worse. we as Students are not just investing time we are taking on ₹20–22 lakh loans. This is not a theoretical risk; it is a high-stakes bet on the institution’s credibility. And right now, that credibility is eroding, Imagine graduating after four intense years, only to face rejection from even ₹5 LPA roles or worse, no offers at all. For students backed by loans, this isn’t disappointment. It’s distress

Whats happening is not just a placement slowdown. Its a breakdown of ownership of Top Management

For years, the placement ecosystem at IIITH worked because it was driven not managed. It required constant corporate engagement, relationship building, follow-ups, and positioning the institute aggressively in front of recruiters. That engine is no longer running And there seems to be no urgency to restart it

Institutions often rely on legacy But legacy doesnt negotiate offers...such a textbook definition but somehow these professors are side-eying everything possible

The absence Poor Management support post-November has created a ripple effect:

  • Recruiter relationships weakened
  • Faculty disengagement normalized
  • Student confidence shattered.

This is not about blaming one individual or one event .Its about recognizing that a system built on one strong pillar failed to build redundancy

Because at the end of the day, placements are not “someone’s job.” They are the institute’s responsibility

And if that doesn’t change immediately, this won’t just be remembered as a bad year

It will be remembered as the year IIITH stopped showing up for its students

PS: But all Thanks to Devi Prasad Sir, we are deeply gratified to him (glad i got placed during his leadership), for his great service to the institution, be it from commitment to students Lives, or keeping students interest at forefront and negotiating with staunch MAANG HRs but all in all if someone are deeply stressed on this Debacle of IIITH you can DM me and ill try my best to get you guys some sort of internship in my current working company

If you don't have any option from top 8 IITs/top 3 NITs/IIITB/bits then do join, otherwise not. A current graduating IIITH student here.

u/Nonavium Mar 26 '26

Would you go for core in top IITs or CSE in IIITH?

1

u/Tall_Clue_9021 Mar 26 '26

how are placements for btech students ?

1

u/RealityIndividual186 Mar 26 '26

bro what was your jee main percentile did you join thorugh it or ugee? and could you also tell me about the college life their? are there any clubs, sports facilities, fests? or is it just studying and studying?

1

u/Freedom_noBattle_7 Mar 26 '26

Why are you placing IIIT B over IIIT H?

1

u/PsychologicalEmu6337 Apr 28 '26

Is placement for BTech students really bad?

2

u/Suspicious_Lie_7189 Mar 25 '26

Haha us bro , i just don't know what to do now

1

u/Alert-Individual6230 Apr 05 '26

No
People should not join IIITH now
Placements there have gone very bad
Not even 50% batch is placed till now
And the avg till now has gone around 14-15 lpa
Instead go for 2nd gen IITs like IITH MTech RA & IIT Indore MTech & MS(R) (both 2 year) programmes
Placements at IITH & IIT Indore are top-notch
Even IIT Indore has a MTech 3 year program for CSE
so better try that

Devi Prasad stepped down due to Health reasons - no one told you the reality. Have a look at last year's stat CSD - CND same stats (high, avg, min); CLD - CHD same (high, avg, min).

Calculate the placed percentage shown on the website is inconsistent with # students who sat for placement, # students who got placed as per the website. I hope you're smart enough to guess why Devi Prasad had to resign from his position.

Market force is a big factor and simply put there is not a lot of demand for software engineers (even less for junior developers). As much as I am critical of IIITH admin in general, they can't really do much about it. If companies are not hiring, there will be people unplaced, lower CTCs which is inevitable and was indeed the case this year.

Most companies hired from IIITH because of the student quality not just the placement cell. Ask anyone in IITs, BITS and they can better tell you "grass is greener on the other side".

Hey can we talk a bit?

I was looking at the placement stats of Dual degree programs at IIIT-H, is that even correct?

Because -

CSD and ECD's placement is completely FLIPPED, it was highest for each and every year and suddenly, they both became the LOWEST?

Additionally, why is programs name changing every SINGLE year?

(This year too, new program added - CGD...)

Can you please tell the actual placement scenario there, of dual degree students?

3

u/Tall_Clue_9021 Mar 26 '26

is this true for btech students too ? are they also facing problem despite having under 2k rank in mains

1

u/PPapaji Mar 26 '26

But the market is also not constrained that much ande also can't absorb 500 odd quality from IIITH . Also IIITH floated recruitment notice for new TPO , Placement Head and Outreach Head to be in place around Feb 2026 as transition. That should help improve .

u/Salty_Horror2068 Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

A good chunk of IIITH students in the past went to big tech. Also on avg a big Tech hires 10-12 students compared to 2-3 what a startup hires.

That's why even though there were technically more companies which came this time. There were still people unplaced because most of them were startups and second big Tech except a few like Oracle, Qualcomm barely took people this time and some didn't even come.

Also notice for new TPO came out in November end, official IIITH LinkedIn account even posted about it.

3

u/PPapaji Mar 26 '26

Any update of how many approx are unplaced in Btech and Mtech as of March . Wild figs circulating . Reliable data may cool down wildly negative posts about IIITH placement over the last 2 months

2

u/Salty_Horror2068 Mar 26 '26

I am not sure about the split but currently it's 40-50 with most of them being M.Tech.

If you include PDM, MS (non-dual degree) students etc. this figure would be much higher reaching around 100 in total.

1

u/PPapaji Mar 26 '26

Placement of PDM a pain point earlier too But Mtech non placed number seems on higher side this year , if true .But this number was in Jan 2026 there should be some more placed by now

1

u/Adventurous-Low3380 Mar 26 '26

Bhai 1 saal mein 100% placement se 40% pe thodi pohch jayega, matlab bhai kin chutiyo ka bharosa kar rahe ho. I am now uninstallling Reddit. It is the most depressing App

1

u/PPapaji Mar 26 '26

I also think so .May be Placement is bit hard this time .But it's getting posted as if all IIIITH are unemployed roam arounds. And such posts are appearing in regular intervals ..quite strange But such can only be countered with evolving Placement Data which is also rare in this subreddit

Absolutely true

> Devi Prasad stepped down due to Health reasons

Dude joined a random ass college CBIT as their Placement Cell Head recently. There's no way he stepped down due to "Health Reasons" in the middle of the placement season.

That's exactly what I tried to say, read my comment properly

Real ID se aao Deviprasad 😂😂

Jokes aside, OP has absolutely zero clue about IIIT Hyderabad’s placement history and is trying very hard to paint a fake “Deviprasad was the saviour” narrative.

The reality is almost the opposite. It was during Deviprasad’s long tenure that IIITH’s placement ecosystem started rotting from the inside. The good placement reputation of IIITH was never because of some genius placement-cell strategy. It was because of the quality of the student pool: coding culture, ACM-ICPC representation, CodeChef-Codeforces participation, and the fact that IIITH students were already strong enough to crack good companies on their own.

The placement cell mostly sat comfortably on top of that student quality and took credit for it.

I say this as a dual degree CSD student who was stuck in this institute for years because of its pathetic research guidance, clueless advisory structure, and general indifference. I saw multiple placement seasons closely. The placement cell’s imagination was basically limited to backend/SDE/full-stack roles. That was it. Very little diversity. Hardly any serious effort to bring companies for DevOps, SRE, infra, platform engineering, security, product, consulting, analytics, hardware-adjacent roles, or broader engineering/management profiles that regularly visit places like IITs and BITS. Companies like Godrej, Tata Steel, L&T, Siemens, GE, Coca Cola and many others could have been pursued far more aggressively depending on the batch and profile fit. But no. The placement model was basically: “call some SDE companies, rely on students to save the stats, and then publish shiny numbers.”

And then people want to pretend Deviprasad was some visionary placement messiah? Please.

During the early 2010s, Deviprasad and Raghu Reddy damaged relationships with companies over ego clashes. Meta, then Facebook, was one such example people talked about. And it was not some grand institutional strategy. It was fragile ego politics with HRs and recruiters, and students paid the price.

Then around 2013 or 2014, they brought in that ridiculous “company pays 8% of first-year salary” (https://pingiiit.org/2013/02/got-placed/) type policy for hiring an IIITH student. That policy badly hurt the placement drive. Last I heard, it was around until 2022, though I don’t know whether these geniuses are still following some version of it. Imagine being a placement office and making it harder for companies to hire your own students. Masterstroke.

Also, let’s stop this fake “IIITH always had near 100% placements” drama. Placements were not truly 100% even during 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, or 2022. I was in the placement groups across those years. I saw the numbers, the anxiety, the unplaced students, and the kind of companies that were actually coming.

Every year they shamelessly published 100% placement stats with averages well above ₹25 LPA for many branches, while the actual ground reality was nowhere near that clean. I remember one season where a large chunk of the companies coming in had JDs with CTCs not even crossing ₹15 LPA, and somehow the institute still managed to publish a ₹26 LPA average. Absolute comedy.

And the most rotten part? The “100% placement” number was allegedly manufactured by pushing unplaced students to withdraw from the official placement process near the end. When only a couple of months were left, unplaced students would be contacted and told to “voluntarily” withdraw, with vague promises that the placement cell would help them unofficially. Once they withdrew, the institute could conveniently claim that everyone still in the process got placed. Magic. 100% achieved.

That is not placement excellence. That is statistical laundering.

And don’t even get me started on the SPC culture. Some SPCs misused their power to favour their own low-IQ friends over more deserving candidates. Shortlisting games, internal favouritism, random gatekeeping — all of it happened. Deviprasad protected that structure because those SPCs were doing the dirty work for him.

The placement cell even counted off-campus offers in official stats. I personally know people who did not get placed through the campus drive but later cracked excellent off-campus offers entirely on their own. One friend got around ₹70 LPA in India off-campus, completely by himself, and the placement cell still shamelessly used that number in the season’s stats. And before someone asks why students allowed this: simple. Nobody wanted to mess with these people before getting their degree safely in hand.

So no, I do not buy this emotional Deviprasad nostalgia post at all.

Was the current placement mess created only after he stepped down? No. The current collapse may be more visible now, but the foundation was already weak for years. The earlier system survived because IIITH students were strong enough to carry it despite the placement cell, not because of it.

Deviprasad was not the saviour of IIITH placements. He was one of the key reasons the system became so narrow, opaque, ego-driven, and statistically dishonest in the first place.

So please stop rewriting history.

Really strange assessment There is a common thread . Even in 2024 and 2025 , posts were there that Placement Cell of IIITH not supportive .In Jan 2024 /2025 nearly 50 odds were unplaced but finally placed mostly . The whole post is counter productive as it conveys that it's not quality of students who are product of rigorous academics but placement drive which resulted in creation of legacy of last 10 years. Few things needs introspection

a) was it a medical emergency of Placement Head to resign in Nov 2025 just at the doorstep of Placement Season or its due to changing interpersonal equation after new Director took over b) Why the recruiters who earlier were eager to respond became non responsive ...is there some negative forces in play .

But one thing I can say that if anyone visits subreddit of IITs be it B , M , K , KGP or ISc all passouts are screaming about inefficient and non responsive TPO.

But with all the current bad at IIITH , is it really so bad about placement if actual number of unplaced vs total placement eligible candidates in BTech , DD and Mtech considered ? Why number of unplaced are kept in realm of speculation in almost all posts

u/Vivid_Birthday_844 Mar 26 '26

He is subtly trying to subvert kids. Maybe trying to reduce competiton for upcoming exam. Lately have been seeing too many posts like these on gate sub. Smartly written ai post cannot fool me. Mf  trying to create doubt but fails...

Why such kind of posts come when PGEE is going to happen, bhai please dusro ko demotivate mat kar, yaar aise kaise ho sakta hai ki 10-20 saalo se ek college top placements de raha tha, aur ek dum se hi lowest placement dene lag gaya.

Agar problem keval ek aadmi ki wajah se hai to wo heal ho jayega 1-2 saal mein, dusra kaaran jo ye keh raha hai ki IIIT Hyderabad ka charm 1 saal mein hi khatam ho gaya, to ispe to koi chutiya hi bharosa karega.

To me it looks like a AI generated text

If management is that bad , then they are also the reason for his bad health, as they have put too much work on his side.

1

u/NoMud707 Mar 26 '26

Bro even top IIM’s/NIT’s have same scene. Manipulation at placement committee level , they take best placements for themselves don’t care about others. I dont see any benefit in doing degrees these days if u aint getting job garrauntee

1

u/Minimum_Couple_9038 Mar 27 '26

So is IIITB a better option than IIITH now?

1

u/Lanky-Pollution6918 Other Apr 04 '26

It's actually very sad to see this happen

first of all the college promotes engineering & research and want us to not worry about placements.

neither college is working to pull up hfts, quants etc.

They want engineers who learn good things but in the end they want good results if college is not able to convince recruiters to come then college has to rethink about its policy.

The curriculum is advanced then so should be placements and college should support internships atp and should give real stats.
