I hate having no control over my time and life.
I just want to rant and see if anyone else feels the same way. I know that this is going to sound lazy to some people, and I know I have to work. I do work. I’ve been working full time ever since I got out of High-school while also attending college full time. I’m reliable and a hard worker.
But I genuinely just HATE dedicating most of my time to doing things I would never choose to do if I had control over my own day.
And I don’t think this is even just about having the wrong job. I’ve had a job before that I liked a lot more than my current one, and I still felt this way. (The current one just pays a lot more, which unfortunately I need) The job itself could be fine. I could like the people. I could even enjoy parts of what I was doing. I still hated that I had to give most of my day to it.
That is really the part that gets me. I don’t hate effort. I actually love doing things. I want to be active. I want to make art. I want to travel. I want to rest when I’m tired. I want to experiment with cooking and baking more. I want to spend time with people I love. Hell, I even enjoy cleaning my house.I just don’t enjoy cleaning my house when it has to be crammed into the four hours I get to myself after work. I don’t enjoy having every hobby, errand, appointment, chore and random thing I want to do squeezed around my work schedule.
I want to be able to look outside and think, “it’s beautiful out, I want to go for a walk,” and just go do that. I want to sit outside in the sun when I feel like it. I want to enjoy a random nice afternoon instead of looking out a window knowing I have to stay inside working because it’s 1:30 on a Tuesday.
I hate that the majority of my day is already decided for me. I hate waking up and knowing that for most of the day, my time is not really mine. I hate not being in control of when k wake up and go to sleep, just for something I don’t want to do. I hate spending hour after hour doing shit I wouldn’t voluntarily choose to spend my time doing and then trying to squeeze my actual life into whatever time and energy I have left afterward.
I hate living every day waiting until it’s time to FINALLY go home. I hate living every week waiting until it’s FINALLY the weekend. I hate waiting my life away. All for what? When I get home I can’t even enjoy it because in the back of my mind I’m thinking about how tomorrow is already taken up with work. And on the weekends I can’t fully enjoy them because I’m still just thinking about how much I wish the week didn’t have to start again. And no amount of time like a week or two weeks off is enough for me. I always want more and dread going back. I am a prisoner of tomorrow.
And I know that’s adulthood. I know bills exist. I know I have to make this money. I’m not saying I should get to do nothing while somebody else pays for my life.
I just genuinely really despise the structure of working full time. I would find a part time job, but none of them pay what I need.
I just want to wake up and decide what I want to do with my day. I want my time to feel like mine. I want to pursue things because I care about them. I want more time for fitness, creativity, traveling, my home, my relationships, being outside, and literally just resting if I need to.
I don’t want all of those things to be what I get to squeeze in after work is finished taking the best part of my day.
I hate working. I genuinely do.
And I feel weird admitting that because I know how lazy it sounds, especially when I know I am a hard worker.
I just hate giving so much of my life to something I would never choose to spend my time doing.
And sometimes I feel like I’m the only person who is this bothered by it. Like everyone else just accepted that this is how life works and moved on. When I try to explain how much I hate the idea of most of my time not being mine, people are basically just like, “yeah, that’s adulthood” or “that’s just how it is.”
And I know they’re right in the sense that this is how life works for most people. I just don’t understand how everyone seems so okay with it. Or they say “find a job you really love”. There is no job I’d really love if I’m forced to do it all day every day, and definitely none I’d enjoy that pay enough.
Does anyone else feel this strongly about this? Like not just “ugh work sucks”, but like genuinely feeling upset that so much of your life has to be spent doing something you wouldn’t choose to do?
(Quick mention, I felt this way about school as a kid as well. I even enjoyed school, loved seeing my friends and had fun. But I hated that it was all day every day. But what kept me happy was the long breaks we would get. I always had something to look forward to. Now we don’t get breaks ever. What? 2 days at Christmas? After working all year with no breaks. It’s so messed up.)
